Reno's women's scholarship program.

(775) 354-6093.
Cowboy Poetry History and Background: Many of us have heard the
term "cowboy poetry." Not all of us know exactly what it is. It's
a tradition that harkens back several generations, when cowboys would entertain
each other with music and poetry around range campfires, and that lively
tradition continues today. Banish the vision of a 19th century recital of
prim English verse. Get ready for dry wit, sweet sentiment, and a lot of
patriotism-often accompanied by toe-tappin' music and a rhythmic beat.Soroptimist
International of Reno belongs to a worldwide organization of women in management
and professions who work through service projects to advance human rights
and the status of women throughout the world. Soroptimist International
of Reno is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization, and donations to it may
be tax-deductible. |

TAHOE BIG BLUE ADVENTURE
RACE
September 19, 2009
Lake Tahoe
Details: 530-564-1019 |
Defined by both the incredible beauty of Lake Tahoe and the
towering peaks of the High Sierra, Lake Tahoe is one of the world’s
most famous sporting playgrounds. The region has an almost endless variety
of spectacular mountain biking trails, adventurous hikes and, of course,
waterborne activities on the “Big Blue” - Lake Tahoe - one of
the largest, deepest and purest alpine lakes on earth. The Tahoe Big Blue
Adventure Race is a celebration of the natural environment of the North
Shore, and the perfect climate of “Indian Summer.” September
is a favorite month of Tahoe locals... and no wonder: day-time temperatures
are in the 80’s with the evenings cooling into the 60’s, the
skies are deep blue with only an occasional afternoon thunderstorm rolling
through (to help keep the dust down on the trails!) and, best of all, the
bustle of the summer tourist season is a distant speck in the rear-view
mirror. This is a perfect time for a visit to the Big Blue. |
NATIONAL REINED COW HORSE ASSOCIATION SNAFFLE
BIT FUTURITY
Sept. 22 - Oct. 4, 2009
Livestock Events Center
Details: 580-759-4949 |
This high-profile event has probably created more fans for
reined cow horses than any other single show. The first Snaffle Bit Futurity
was held in 1970 at Cal-Expo in Sacramento and boasted 27 entries. In the
following years, the Futurity has become a major spectator event with thousands
of fans now making the trip each fall to the Reno Livestock Events Center
in Nevada for twelve days of the worlds finest cow horse action.
Horses entered in the futurity are 3-year olds, and are shown in a snaffle
bit in three different disciplines - Herd Work, Rein Work, and Cow Work.
The herd work, or cutting, comes first, followed by the reining pattern
in the rein work. The signature cow work, often called fence work, is where
the horse holds or boxes the cow at the end of the arena, then turns in
on the fence and finally circles it both ways in the arena.
Its been called the "Greatest Show on Dirt" and the NRCHA
World Championship Snaffle Bit Futurity is fun for exhibitors and spectators
alike. In addition to the 3-year-old snaffle bit competition, the show features
all of the NRCHA bridle and hackamore classes, special entertainment, the
annual Hall of Fame Banquet, a huge Western Trade Show, plus the Snaffle
Bit Futurity Horse Sales. |
