The thing that makes any entertainer successful is the ability to connect with an audience. It's the quality of sharing the humor in everyday situations that has made Bill Engvall one of the top comedians today and among the busiest. Silver Legacy welcomes Bill Engvall to the stage on Saturday, June 2 at 8 p.m. in the Grande Exposition Hall.

Most recently, Bill was the host on the game show LINGO for GSN. LINGO premiered on June 6, 2011 and was the highest rated show in GSN network history. The three reunited for “Them Idiots Whirled Tour”, which was filmed as a special for CMT and will air in the first quarter of 2012.

Bill has starred in and executive produced his own self-titled sitcom for TBS, which ran for three seasons. He was the host of one of the top rated shows on CMT, Country Fried Home Videos and one of the stars of the sketch comedy show, Blue Collar TV, on the WB network. He shot a special for the WB network called Mobile Home Disasters, which helped propel the network to one of its best Thursday nights of the season. In 1997, Engvall won the “Best Selling Comedy album” award at the annual NARM convention, outselling albums by Chris Rock and Adam Sandler.

Bill’s second CD, DORKFISH (Warner Bros., October ’98), was certified gold (500,000 copies), and had the honor of being ranked #1 on Billboard’s Comedy Chart, surpassing Jerry Seinfeld’s album. Celebrating 17 Years of Amazing BBQ, Brews and Blues!

The unofficial kick off to summer, the 17th Annual Great Eldorado BBQ, Brews and Blues festival is set for Friday June 22 and Saturday June 23. The event is equal parts barbeque block party, micro-brew tasting event and music festival with two stages featuring non-stop rock and blues.

Nothing says summer like barbecue and the Eldorado has the perfect compliment to the festival's variety of microbrews…grilled chicken, ribs, sausage and more, fresh from the outdoor charbroil grill. Food booths will line Virginia Street serving everything from American favorites to tacos and Korean barbecue.

A selection of the Eldorado's own Brew Brothers' custom microbrews will be on tap along with more than 40 microbreweries from around the world. Beer lovers will appreciate the flat rate tasting fee instead of using tokens to sample brews. The new $30 daily or $50 weekend tasting package includes an eight ounce souvenir cup and unlimited tastings during the festival tasting times of 2 to 7 p.m. on Friday and noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday. Plus they’ll have a say in which brew is crowned the winner. Instead of a professional judging panel, the winner will be determined based on a “People’s Choice” award this year.

Two stages with non-stop free entertainment round out the event with headliners including quintessential American band, The Fabulous Thunderbirds; Canned Heat with their unique blend of modern electric blues, rock and boogie that can be heard in rock anthems like “On The Road Again,” “Let’s Work Together” and “Going Up The Country;” and the US Air Force Band “Mobility,” an upbeat group of talented musicians playing rock, jazz and blues favorites, new and old. Additionally, attendees can see winner of two coveted Blues Music Awards, Charlie Musselwhite; singer-songwriter, Edwin McCain; American roots music artist, Shane Dwight; Reno favorites the Blues Monsters and the Jason King Band; soulful South Bay guitarist and vocalist Maxx Cabello Jr.; and Rockin Down the Highway.

There’s no better way to celebrate summer than with the 17th Annual Great Eldorado BBQ, Brews and Blues Festival, set for Friday, June 22 and Saturday, June 23. Visit www.eldoradoreno.com for more information or call 888-808-7720 to book your stay.

(OFFERING SOME OF THE BEST SEATS ON EARTH!) FLEISCHMANN PLANETARIUM INVITES COMMUNITY TO VIEW SPECTACULAR ANNULAR SOLAR ECLIPSE IN RENO, MAY 20

Planetarium's special viewing event to be held at the MacLean Observatory on the Redfield Campus in south Reno

Solar eclipses are not rare events, but perfect eclipses visible from our backyard are. On Sunday evening, May 20, 2012, Reno will be one of only a few cities in the world where an annular solar eclipse will be visible in its entirety (weather permitting), as the Moon aligns exactly in front of the Sun and the Sun appears as a bright ring (annulus) surrounding the Moon.

The University of Nevada, Reno's Fleischmann Planetarium will host a free viewing event to watch this spectacular occurrence, Sunday, May 20 from 5-7 p.m., at the MacLean Observatory on the University's Redfield Campus, 18600 Wedge Parkway in southwest Reno. Activities will also include a photovoltaic (PV) demonstration trailer from NV Energy's Renewable Generations program, a mobile planetarium from the Challenger Learning Center, demonstrations from the University's College of Education, hands-on activities from the Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada, displays from DRI's Green Power program, and a high-altitude BalloonSat launch.

The event is free and open to the public. Participants are encouraged to bring a picnic dinner; no alcoholic beverages are allowed on the Redfield campus but beverages and food are available for purchase at nearby restaurants. The event is sponsored by the Planetarium in partnership with the Astronomical Society of Nevada, the Nevada Historical Society and KNPB Channel 5.

"Reno is one of the only cities in the United States that will be very near the central path of this annular eclipse, which will be visible in North America only across parts of the southwestern United States," says Dan Ruby, associate director of Fleischmann Planetarium. "The period of maximum eclipse as viewed from Reno that day will be from 6:28-6:33 p.m. The next annular eclipse viewable from North America will not appear for another 20 years, and the next total eclipse viewable from across Northern Nevada won't occur until 2045."

The path of the May 20 annular solar eclipse will vary in width, averaging about 150-miles wide as it travels across the Pacific Ocean and the southwestern U.S. "Reno is ideal because we are very near the center line and the sun will be still visible about 20 degrees above the horizon as the point of maximum eclipse passes us," Ruby says. "The moon will be near the furthest point in its orbit and obscure 95 percent of the sun's disk."

As an encore to the May 20 annular eclipse, a much more rare transit of Venus in front of the Sun will occur on the afternoon of Tuesday, June 5, 2012, where viewers can see a small black dot of Venus crossing the face of the Sun from about 3 p.m. to sunset.

Ruby cautions that eclipses must be observed with care, as the sun remains bright enough to damage eyesight. The Planetarium's Science Store on the University of Nevada, Reno campus offers simple and inexpensive solar glasses for direct viewing; eclipse watchers can also build their own indirect viewers. For more information about the annular solar eclipse event at Redfield campus, viewing safety tips, making an indirect viewer, and other eclipse resources, visit the Fleischmann Planetarium's eclipse website at http://www.eclipsereno.unr.edu .

For more information about the annular eclipse, visit NASA's comprehensive eclipse site at http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov .

The Planetarium has partnered with the Silver Legacy Resort Casino to offer discount room rates to eclipse visitors from out of town. Call Silver Legacy Reservations, 1-800-687-8733 or (775) 325-7401 and use the Special Offer Code UNRES12 to receive a discounted rate of $99/per night double occupancy for Friday and Saturday nights, May 18 and 19, and $69 for Sunday night, May 20, 2012.

The May 20 public viewing event at Redfield Campus will be followed by a dinner for Planetarium members, featuring speaker Dean Regas of PBS' Star Gazers program. For more information about the members' dinner, visit http://www.knpb.org/events/sun_celebration .

Fleischmann Planetarium is part of the University of Nevada, Reno and Extended Studies, offering science-related exhibits, public star shows and large-format science films, as well as public star observing courtesy of the Astronomical Society of Nevada. The Planetarium is open daily to the public and admission is free to its museum; individual and group tickets to Planetarium shows and special events are also available for purchase to nonmembers. Shows are free to Fleischmann Planetarium members.

For more information about joining Friends of the Planetarium as a member, upcoming exhibits, and events and shows playing in the Fleischmann Planetarium Star Theater, call (775) 784-4812 or visit http://www.planetarium.unr.edu .

Built in 1964, the Fleischmann Planetarium and Science Center on the University of Nevada, Reno campus was the first planetarium in the world to project full-dome movies, and is currently one of the first of a handful of planetariums around the world to utilize the Spitz SciDome digital projector, a high-resolution, state-of-the-art immersive visualization tool. The projector is also adaptable to a number of disciplines and uses, supporting collaborations among the Planetarium, other University departments and programs, and community organizations. The Planetarium's uniquely shaped building was designed by famed Reno architect Ray Hellman and is listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings. Fleischmann Planetarium serves more than 40,000 visitors a year, including hundreds of school field trips that introduce students, K-12, to the wonders of the universe.

“IT’S HAMMER TIME” WITH MC HAMMER AT SILVER LEGACY

M.C. Hammer, the immensely popular rap artist, actor and entrepreneur, synthesized the street sounds of black cultural in the 80’s and 90’s. “Let’s Get It Started” on Saturday, June 30 at 8 p.m. in Silver Legacy’s Grande Exposition Hall.

Hammer, best known for hits like “U Can’t Touch This,” flamboyant dance moves and trademark Hammer pants, attained superstar-status that made him a household name and pop icon. Named after his likeness to baseball's big hitter, Henry 'Hammerin' Hank' Aaron, he made his first forays into music financed by baseball players Mike Davis and Dwayne Murphy, allowing him to form Bustin' Records and release the solo single, "Ring 'Em.'

MC Hammer has previously been part of the religious rap group the Holy Ghost Boys, and cut a 1987 debut set “Feel My Power.” A minor hit, it did enough to bring MC Hammer to the attention of Capitol Records. After contracts were completed, the album was reissued under the title “Let’s Get It Started.” Following this success, in 1990, was “Please Hammer, Don’t Hurt ‘Em,” spending twenty-one weeks at #1, resulting in a Diamond certification and near constant rotation on pop channel MTV and dance routines that were the equal of Michael Jackson.

1991 brought a Top 40 Hit with “Here Comes The Hammer,” and five American Music Awards nominations for “U Can’t Touch This.” With the single sampled Rick James’ “Super Freak,” creating a precedent for follow-ups “Have You Seen Her” and “Pray,” the latter achieving his highest chart position when it reached US number two.

The follow-up, "Too Legit To Quit," was released under the name “Hammer.” The sleeve notes to the album expanded on his desire for black youth to rid themselves of drugs and resurrect their Christian morality through self-education.

By 1994, there was a huge image switch, from harem pants and leather cat suits to dark glasses and a goatee beard. The resultant album pulled in producers G-Bomb from Grand Jury Records, the Hines brothers from Detroit, Teddy Riley and members of the Dogg Pound, and specifically went after the Oakland G-funk of artists such as Too $hort. Hammer returned with "The Funky Headhunter."

There is nobody quite like MC Hammer and he is right here at the Grande Exposition Hall on Saturday, June 30 at 8 p.m. Tickets are available for $45 with premium seating for $59.50. To reserve seats visit www.silverlegacy.com or call 1-800-MUST-SEE (687-8733) or 775-325-7401. The Eldorado Holds Successful Field Trial of the Bally Elite Bonusing Suite

The Eldorado Hotel Casino is completing a field trial for the Bally Elite Bonusing Suite. To test the system, the Eldorado turned 42 penny machines into a new “Power Pennies” promotion, while another 52 video machines ran the virtual racing application, “Power Ponies,” as part of the overall promotion. Once the field trial is complete and approved, the casino plans to add another 400 plus machines to the new promotion.

“We are extremely pleased with how the field test is going,” said Rob Mouchou, vice president of operations for the Eldorado Hotel Casino, “and very excited about this great new promotion. It’s been very successful and the response from guests has been incredible.”

U-Spin Bonusing allows the player to touch the game screen and physically spin the bonus wheel making for an interactive bonus game experience. The player is rewarded with a prize amount on each wedge of that wheel, which varies depending on player eligibility and wager habits. What’s unique about this system is that players can take earned bonuses from one machine to another and from one day to the next.

“We’ve had a great response from players,” said Mouchou. “They earn bonuses and they know those bonuses will be there tomorrow or six months from now.”

The system’s exclusive tournament application means separate machines don’t need to be brought in for slot tournaments – the application can be turned on or off as needed. The application recently took first place in the Casino Enterprise Management’s sixth annual Slot Floor Technology Awards.

Utilizing the Elite Bonusing Suite allows the Eldorado a way to link the machines together, not only allowing for the bonus wheels to follow players from machine to machine, but it also allows for casino wide events like the “Power Ponies” virtual racing, tournaments and more.

“The casino wide events like ‘Power Ponies’ create a frenzied competition that creates genuine player excitement on the casino floor,” said Mouchou.

Players can experience the new system in a variety of ways that allow them to win more. They can play the “Power Pennies” Bonus Wheel, which lets players earn bonus spins for FreePlay on three wheels that follow them as they play other “Power Pennies” machines. In addition, the “Power Pennies” Random Birthday Bonus gives players a chance to win FreePlay daily at 5:30 p.m. The exciting “Power Ponies” virtual racing application allows players to win FreePlay if they choose the winning horse. Races take place each day on the hour, from noon until 9 p.m. “Power Pennies” $1,000 Fabulous Friday Slot Tournaments run every Friday from 6 to 10 p.m. And for a new group of Club Eldorado members, each Friday also means “Power Pennies” Eldorado Lotto.

More new and exciting casino wide promotions will evolve on the Eldorado “Power Pennies” moving forward. For more information on the Eldorado Hotel Casino or the Bally Elite Bonusing Suite, visit www.eldoradoreno.com or call 775-786-5700.

Whole Foods Sparks Farmers’ Market Celebrates 20 Years in Business with New Producers

Shirley’s Farmer’s Markets and John Ascuaga’s Nugget have partnered to produce the Whole Foods Sparks Farmers’ Market on Victorian Square. The new partners are aiming to bring back the family friendly atmosphere and farmer focus for the 20th anniversary of the market.

The Whole Foods Sparks Farmers’ Market will open June 7 and run every Thursday through August 23, except August 9 due to Hot August Nights. The season has been extended to 11 weeks this year, longer than the past few years. The market will also open an hour earlier, running from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.

A highlight of the 2012 market will be a new gourmet food truck court with food trucks from our area. The market will also feature an expanded food area. “We want to encourage visitors to enjoy a meal at the market or find products they can take home for an easy summer dinner,” said Shirley Sponsler, president of Shirley’s Farmers’ Markets. “We want to put a focus back into it that’s geared toward farmers and food,”

The City of Sparks reached out to the Nugget and Shirley Sponsler to produce the event earlier this year. “It has always been a great event for Victorian Square and Sparks,” said Beth Cooney, executive director of marketing at John Ascuaga’s Nugget. “We hope to re-create the family and community atmosphere of the event’s earlier days.”

Sponsler was the producer of the original market in 1992 and has worked with the City of Sparks on the event ever since. She noted that the Nugget was instrumental in getting the Farmers’ Market started twenty years ago. Stephen Ascuaga was a member of the organizational committee.

The Whole Foods Sparks Farmers’ Market contributes to the local economy by not only introducing new business and products to the region, but also by creating local summer jobs. Sponsler said she plans to employ more than 30 people this summer.

SILVER LEGACY PRESENTS SPIRITUAL TEACHER AND PSYCHIC SYLVIA BROWNE

Sylvia Browne is a world renowned spiritual teacher, psychic, author, lecturer and researcher in the field of parapsychology. Sylvia is well known for her dynamic, genuine, down-to-earth style and personality. She lectures, teaches, and counsels people from all over the world including Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia. Sylvia manifested her psychic ability at the age of three, in her home town of Kansas City, MO. For many years she shared her gift with friends and family, and became very well known for helping people to see their future. Moving to California in 1964, she continued assisting people privately. Sylvia then wanted to make a professional, legally sanctioned, organization to further her research into the paranormal. This goal was realized in 1974 when Sylvia incorporated The Nirvana Foundation for Psychic Research, a nonprofit organization (now known as Sylvia Browne Corporation). Since then, Sylvia has helped thousands of people gain control of their lives, live more happily, understand the meaning of life, and to find God in their own unique way.

Sylvia's philosophy of life is based upon research into past lives, via hypnosis, and through the information obtained via Sylvia's deep trance channeling ability. From thousands of hypnotic regressions, and hundreds of trance sessions, the fact of reincarnation was established as the key to understanding life. Sylvia accepts reincarnation as a central theme in her philosophy, yet this belief is never forced upon anyone who does not want to hear it. Sylvia always says, "Take with you what you want and leave the rest behind." She is also strongly pro God, but again does not force the issue. Sylvia likes to tell people, "It does not matter if you believe in God, because God believes in you."

Sylvia Browne's media appearances have included national programs such as Unsolved Mysteries, In Search Of ..., That's Incredible, The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet, Loveline with Dr Drew, and was a weekly guest on the Montel Williams Show for over 17 years . Internationally she has appeared numerous times on Larry King Live. In Los Angeles, Sylvia was a frequent guest on AM Los Angeles. The Pacific Northwest has seen Sylvia on Northwest Afternoon and Town Meeting, and the east coast has seen her on Good Day Boston among others. The entire nation saw her starring in the hour long CBS Special Haunted Lives.

Sylvia does many public appearances each year, from her two hour one-woman show, to benefits for charitable organizations. She is involved with community activities and donates many hours to help find missing children and also working with police to solve crimes. Sylvia is actively working on hospices for the elderly, abused children, and persons with AIDS. Sylvia has over 50 published works resulting from her research into parapsychology with 22 appearing on the New York Times Bestsellers List. These books include: (Her biography) "Adventures of a Psychic," "The Other Side and Back," "Life on the Other Side," "Book of Dreams," Contacting Your Spirit Guide," "Book of Angels," "Visits from the Afterlife," "Prophecy," "Secrets & Mysteries of the World," "Animals on the Other Side," "Phenomenon," "If You Could See What I See," "Insights," "Exploring the Levels of Creation," "The Mystical Life of Jesus," "Secret Societies,” "Temples on the Other Side,” "End of Days," and "Mystical Traveler" Her most recent books, "All Pets Go to Heaven," "Psychic Healing," "Messages From Spirit," "Accepting the Psychic Torch," and "The Truth About Psychics" have been a major hit with readers all over the world.

Her latest release, "Psychic - My Life in Two Worlds," Sylvia's first of three books with her new publisher HarperOne, is an intimate, unapologetic, no-holdsbarred memoir that candidly discusses deeper personal and professional experiences that she has never revealed in public.

To further her goals, Sylvia formed another organization in 1986, the Society of Novus Spiritus (meaning New Spirit) based upon a Christian Gnostic theology. She has trained ministers to actively help spread her philosophy. Her goals are to give aid to the infirm, shelter to the homeless and establish a spiritual community that loves God (both the Father and Mother God) without the sin and guilt found in most of today's faiths.

Sylvia's newest addition to her ever-expanding organization is The Sylvia Browne Hypnosis Training Center which was formed as an accredited organization to teach individuals her unique, proven hypnosis methods for either professional or personal use as a powerful tool in healing and behavior modification.
