Reno could be vaguely compared to Fremont Street in LV... much more walkable than The Strip! However, no light-up canopy and Fremont has way more neon...

If you like Vegas style accommodations, Peppermill is a good choice; Alison on this board goes there often and speaks highly of it.

The Dog and I used to stay at Harrah's in Reno and it's comparable to Bally's in LV, though Harrah's in Reno has been more recently renovated (at least, the West tower has been). We've recently switched up to the Cal-Neva - far older, but we like the grittiness of it....

Reno is a lot less glitzy than LV, but The Dog and I find it to be a far better place to gamble. The comps are better for us and the staff is just all around more friendly and gracious. Reno really seems to want your business. And there aren't the LINES like we find in LV...

Our recent summer trip to LV was fun, but when went to Reno a few weeks later, we realized we prefer Reno. Unless you're a high roller ($100+/hand), Las Vegas really doesn't care about you. If you love all the shows and the possibility of spotting a celebrity or two, then Reno will seem a bit dry. But if you like to gamble and don't have the bankroll to be a high roller, Reno will treat you right!

The Peppermill is a fine choice for you. It is probably the closest to a Las Vegas type casino in Reno. It is a very nice place. Don't come to Reno and expect a Las Vegas expierence-- it is different.

Be sure you get out and explore what the Reno area has to offer.

As lilly stated above, i love the pep!! This would definetely be the most vegas type resort.

Reno is nothing like vegas though. The downtown area, is where most the casinos are. The Peppermill is a short car ride from there. You really dont need to leave the Pep though as it has everything there.

Oh yes! You will need a car to get up there (and it takes an hour due to the windy road up) but it's fun to go to... a tip from JD from this very board: check out the Mark Twain Bookstore right on the main drag.

Another JD tip: The Red Dog Saloon is another venerable institution up there - here's a link to a cool article about the town and the Red Dog - http://www.furious.com/perfect/reddogsaloon.html

And there's an old Faro table up there at one of the saloons, known as the "Suicide Table". Do a search on this forum for more info about the game of Faro...

Two other bits of advice...

1) If you've never been to Lake Tahoe, and are in Virginia City anyway, take the extra hour and drive up the mountain until the first sight of the lake. Pull over and take lots of pictures.

2) Upload an avatar so Dave can add you to the smoking club.

Even more advice piggybacking on mjames: If you're driving up to see Lake Tahoe, go ahead and hit the Montebleu and play some Sigma Derby...
