Now in its 17th year, the University of Nevada, Reno’s
Gaming Management Series provides industry-specific professional
development, with the best demonstrated practices used today,

for teacher recertification, career advancement and degree programs.
Summer Institutes, providing professional development for educators
and others, feature the latest techniques, hands-on workshops
and course content available in a variety of subject areas and
formats. Some institutes have open enrollment and others are
by application only. Some are grant-funded and have stipends
available to defray the expenses of participants. The University

Advanced NESSI is open only to participants who have completed

The Northern Nevada Writing Program (NNWP) Open teaches the
philosophy of the National Writing Project, which emphasizes
teachers teaching teachers. Participants will be encouraged
in their own personal writing, instructed in the latest in
classroom writing research, and shown techniques for effective
teaching of the writing process in their classrooms. Strategies
for teaching the state writing standards (5.0, 6.0 and 7.0),
writing traits, and district competencies will be highlighted.

Special Problems: Mark Twain - Virginia City and the Comstock
(HP 499/699)
Little is known about Mark Twain's Virginia City, as the period
predates much of the documentation, and much of the community
was lost to a fire. This class will focus on remaining documents,
buildings and archaeology. Twain's important work, Roughing
It, describes Virginia City, and understanding his experiences
there is an important aspect of Comstock and American history.
The first session emphasizes lecture and discussion. The second
session will meet in Virginia City where on-site practical
experience with architectural history will be the focus. All
participants are required to have high-speed Internet access
and an email account. Students must provide their own transportation
to Virginia City for a walking tour on Saturday, July 18.
Attendance is mandatory at all sessions. Grades for this course

This course provides teachers the opportunity to collect and
develop curriculum ideas for starting out the school year.

| RENO, Nev. – The School of the Arts at
the University of Nevada, Reno presents world-class offerings
from guest artists and performers, as well as faculty and students
within the school’s departments of art, dance, music,
theatre and visual arts. Most arts365 performances and exhibits
take place in the Church Fine Arts Building on the University
campus — many are free and all are open to the community.
The Summer Arts Festival and Summer Chamber Music Series
are part of the 14th annual Artown Festival, July 1 –
31, 2009 and made possible by a Cultural Event Grant from
the City of Reno. The month-long summer arts festival features
more than 350 events produced by more than 100 cultural organizations
and businesses in locations citywide, with major funding provided
by the City of Reno.
Free parking is available after 7 p.m. in the Brian Whalen
Parking Complex, north of Church Fine Arts, and in the Sierra
Street Parking Complex, one block west of North Virginia Street
between 11th Street and College Drive. A patron drop-off area
is adjacent to Nightingale Concert Hall on North Virginia
Street near College Drive.

Summer Arts Festival

The Summer Arts Festival is a multicultural festival featuring
performances by diverse music and dance groups from St. Thomas
Aquinas Cathedral, the University of Nevada, Reno School of
the Arts and members of the Reno-Sparks community. This event
will also feature an urban flare with a theatrical performance
by Reno's own "Rappin’ Padre," Father Masseo
Gonzales. Father Gonzales’ work features an anti-gang
message and incorporates local youth. David Gonzales, creator
of the HOMIES urban toy line and author of the MiJOS children
book series, will be present at the event to sign memorabilia.

Pianist Jiyang Chen returns to hometown of Reno to give a
recital. Chen is a graduate of Reno High School and has performed
with the Reno Chamber Orchestra as the winner of the Concerto
Competition, at Bartley Ranch in the Beethoven at Bartley
Series and at the Governor’s Arts Award Ceremony. He
is currently finishing his undergraduate degree at the Eastman
School of Music where his recent senior recital received a
standing ovation.

A children’s matinee is being specially designed and
will be included in the Artown Discover the Arts program.
We are currently in discussion with Artown and the program
coordinator. This program will include a performance of Poulenc’s
L'histoire de Babar, le petit elephant for piano and narrator.
With the Discover the Arts program will explore the opportunity
to incorporate an elephant mask making activity (or other
activity) prior to the concert and a parade of animals at
the conclusion of the concert.

Tonight’s concert will feature works by Brahms, Grieg
and Beethoven performed by members of nationally-acclaimed
Telluride Chamber Music Festival. These musicians will stop
in Reno on their way to Telluride, Colo. to perform their
festival repertoire for Reno Audiences. Musicians on this
special summer series will be James Winn, Roy Malan, Polly
Malan, John Lenz, Ruth Lenz, Nancy Ellis and Katharine DeBoer.
