"A UNIVERSE OF DREAMS" IN THE PERFORMING
ARTS SERIES |
NPR’S NEAL CONAN AND ENSEMBLE GALILEI BRING
“A UNIVERSE OF DREAMS” TO THE PERFORMING ARTS SERIES
AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA, RENO IN OCTOBER
In a tapestry of images, words and music, “A Universe
of Dreams” expresses the beautiful and compelling realms
of the cosmos, with projected images from NASA’s Hubble
Space Telescope, evocative music inspired by the galaxies and
performed by Ensemble Galilei, and works from some of the world’s
finest poets, narrated by Neal Conan, host of National Public
Radio’s “Talk of the Nation.” As part of
a simply stellar 2006-07 season, the Performing Arts Series
at the University of Nevada, Reno, presents "A Universe
of Dreams" with Neal Conan and Ensemble Galilei performing
Thursday, Oct. 6, 2006, at 7:30 p.m. in Nightingale Concert
Hall.
Wielding an intriguing mix of ancient and modern instruments
— Celtic harp, oboe, Scottish small pipes, viola di
gamba, fiddle, recorders, whistles and more — the critically
acclaimed musicians of Ensemble Galilei draw on a repertoire
of traditional Irish, Scottish, early and original music to
create works of celestial grace.
Old and new also combine as the group accompanies stunning
images from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope such as the
Cat’s Eye Nebula, the Sombrero Galaxy, the core of the
Crab Nebula and many more, including artists’ conceptualizations
of celestial events photographed by the telescope.
Adding another dimension to the work, “Talk of the
Nation” host Neal Conan will narrate, performing the
poetry of Michael S. Glaser, V.P. Loggins, William Shakespeare,
Jim Harrison, Stanley Kunitz, Philo Judaeus, Ann Lister and
others to connect the ancient and modern with the spoken word.
“’Universe of Dreams’ is a wonderful mix
of early music, modern photography and poetry connecting to
create an immersive arts experience unlike any other,”
said C.J. Walters, director of the University's Performing
Arts Series.
“This is one of those events that will truly capture
the audience’s imagination — the layering of images,
music and poetry engages all the senses in a way distinct
from the experience of each art form alone,” Walters
said.

American Chamber Players
Feb. 8, 2007, 7:30 p.m., Nightingale Concert Hall
From familiar masterpieces, to neglected gems, to newly commissioned
American works, the musical territory covered by renowned
American Chamber Players is always exciting and innovative.
Founded in 1985 by National Public Radio’s “Performance
Today” and “Morning Edition” music commentator,
Miles Hoffman, the group of gifted artists grew from the prestigious
Library of Congress Summer Chamber Festival, which Hoffman
led as artistic director for nearly a decade. “They
have established standards of chamber music performance equal
to any in the world.” — The Washington Post

Vishten
March 8, 2007, 7:30 p.m., Nightingale Concert Hall
A hardy mixture of French, Irish and Scottish musical styles
recalls the joy and energy of the Acadian “kitchen party,”
as Vishten’s fiery fiddling and powerful step dancing
celebrate community gatherings where all are welcome to sing,
play and dance. Masters of a remarkable array of instruments
— accordion, piano, bodhran, flute, tin whistle, fiddle,
mandolin, guitar — the high-energy group brings a joie
de vivre to the stage with fast fingering, tapping feet and
unabashed enthusiasm. As the Eastern Canadian band likes to
say, “Wherever Vishten goes, a party is likely to follow.”
