The Reno Area Avian Enthusiasts Club was formed in 1992 with a mission to bring together people who share a common interest in the keeping and breeding of cage birds in captivity. RAAVE is a non-profit 501 (c) 3 educational/charitable organization registered with the Nevada Secretary of State. Current membership is over 125 household and individual members. Approximately 136 species of birds are represented in the membership from the largest of Macaws , Cockatoos, Budgies, Cockatiels and Canaries to the tiniest of Finches. All persons interested in the welfare of birds are invited to attend monthly meetings. And all are welcome to join.
The RAAVE Adopt A Bird Program aids in the re-homing of birds that can no longer be kept by their owners should a change in life circumstances or health problems arise. Every effort is made to place birds in loving, responsible, permanent homes within the RAAVE membership.
Educational Programs are presented at the request of teachers, libraries and residential sites to promote interest and educational opportunities for members of the Northern Nevada area. Volunteers take a variety of birds and materials to the visits. Presentations include brief histories of the origin of the various species, displays of bird behaviors and information on the care and keeping of birds as pets and for breeding purposes.
Fundraising programs are held 2 times a year. The largest is the Exotic Bird Expo at the Reno Livestock Events Center Exhibit Hall on 1350 N. Wells Ave., Reno. Vendors from all over the west coast bring and sell wares from birds of all sizes, cages, toys, food, supplies arts and crafts, to jewelry and works of art. Admission is $6.00 per person, children 12 and under are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. The second largest is our Annual Auction held on the 4th Saturday of March. Donations are varied and members keep things at a fever pitch as bidding of desired items come up.
RAAVE donates monies raised to local, regional and international organizations for the benefit of all types of avian issues. Recent donations have been made to
Best Friends Animal Society in Kanab, Utah and Sierra Safari Zoo located in the Northern Reno Area and Indonesia's
Project Parrot Watch.
