I just noticed that a Bully's Sports Bar has just opened in the Bowling Stadium downtown, in the part of the building formerly occupied by a pool hall/bar operation. So now you have a reason to check out that side of town even if you don't bowl or aren't looking for companionship on E. 4th St. For those who don't know Bully's, it's a very popular locally owned and operated chain of about 10 bar/restaurants all with a consistent sports theme. It seems there's one in just about every neighborhood, as well as in Carson. The food is typical pub grub - burgers and sandwiches, a little Mexican and pizzas, and is generally pretty good (not great) and reasonably priced.

The Bowling Stadium is usually mentioned as part of the new entertainment & sports district associated with the baseball stadium, so I guess Bully's can claim to be the first business to jump on board. It remains to be seen whether a sports bar with just a few bar top machines can make it in downtown Reno alongside the casinos with their sports books, lounges, restaurants and buffets. Rocky's sure didn't do it, but I don't know the whole story there. On the other hand is the space at Sierra & First that was said to be plagued by invisible location and inconvenient parking until Silver Peak took over and became very successful. I guess if you have the product you can build it and they will come. (Oh wait, that's the baseball field.)

I've got a stupid question... Can you go bowling at the National Bowling Stadium. Can you walk on in and rent shoes and play a few frames?

Thanks

I can't stop laughing. I thought the original post was going to be about lowlifes hassling or intimidating patrons; gang-member types or similar bullies. LOL, silly me.

you weren't the only one, Bear, it's why I opened it! However, now I can check it out, bully-free or not.

No, you can't. When it was being planned, the local bowling businesses quite logically complained that they shouldn't have to pay taxes to build their own competition, so usage is limited to national tournaments and similar special events. But you can walk in free of charge, look around, visit the logo shop and watch a bit of bowling from the huge grandstand. I think there are something like 100 lanes there.

I think that policy upset a lot of people who wondered why they had to pay taxes to build a bowling stadium they can't use. I was a little pissed until I remembered I have no interest in the sport.

John, I had heard that your bowling skills (or lack of same) were one of the primary reasons for the rule. Shocked

Though, in your defense, I must say this. Haven't observed your VP skills, I believe you would be an ALL-STAR on the Reset button. Cool Exclamation Exclamation

To tell the truth, Hawk, if everyone had my bowling skills, the place would have never been built. Now my goal is to switch my bowling and golf scores. That would put me at the Pro level in both activities.
