O.K. another guy’s trip from BC Dave.

Oct. 27th, 08

We flew down on an early morning flight from Bellingham Washington via Allegiant Air. Nine of us in our group this time. Check in at the Eldorado was painfully slow even though they weren’t very busy. It seemed the three on duty check in clerks were all on the phone trying to iron out screwed up reservations. Once that was finally over I proceeded to my room and then downstairs for a little video poker and some Pharaoh’s Fortune. We all met at 7 P.M. for the Eldo’s Buffet. The changes to the buffet are quite apparent but I’m not sure they really needed to be done. I kinda liked the old set up to tell you the truth. This day turned out to be my best, luck wise, and I retired later thinking what a smart gambler I was.

28th

Our first full day in the “Big Little”. After some disappointing wagering at various locales we met John at the Fireside Lounge at the Pep for Happy hour. Actually I stopped in at John’s place to say hi to Charlie and Higgins before getting to the Pep. Although an extensive bar tour of the Peppermill had been planned it never really happened. John and I got caught up on things and then played some Hot Penny (cold) some Pharaoh’s fortune and Video Poker. None of these machines appeared to be in correct working order as all they did was gobble up our money. John gave me a lift back to town and dropped me off at Shooters.

Sure enough a few of my group were in that den of ill repute. So I had a beer with them before calling it a night. The marquee in front of Shooters announced their Halloween plans: A Pimps and Hos costume party! So how’s the place going to look any different (from normal) I wondered.

29th

On Tuesday we rented a minivan and drove to Tahoe. We had beautiful weather and the lake was, as always, beautiful. We gambled a while at Harrah’s in Stateline and then drove thru Carson and Virginia cities on the way back.

That night I made a point of spending some time at Fitzgerald’s (knowing her days are numbered). Stan, you can still get those dollars at the Lucky Forest but no folding pens or hats. I had enough credits for a couple of tiny flashlights which are kinda cool. I gambled there playing Pharaoh’s Fortune and the old 10’s or better Video Poker up on the 2nd floor. I also played an Elvis multi strike slot. Very entertaining! After I descended the escalator I caught the last 45 minutes of the live entertainment. Just a two man group but they were cranking out the tunes like there was no tomorrow. They were both very talented guitar players and took turns with the vocals. I vowed to return and see them again. I got hungry late that night and inhaled an Awful Awful just after 1 A.M.

30th

We all got together for a breakfast at the Sedona at the Silver Legacy. Plans were made to venture out to Sparks that afternoon. I gambled downtown some and looked for a gift or two for the dear ones back home. Eventually I caught the bus out to the Western Village Inn and Casino which is way out past the Nugget. The Western Village is a sister property on the Peppermill. From the outside it’s very plain looking but inside…well you might as well be in the Peppermill. You know…. “A Neon Madhouse”*. Met a few of the guys there playing blackjack and I sat down with them and played a while. Actually made a few bucks. Then I decided to head back to downtown Reno. With my 24 hour bus pass in hand I set out for a bus stop. I knew the buses were rerouted around the Western Village because of construction so I walked to where I was fairly certain the bus would stop. Nope, no bus. Decided to walk awhile. I ended up walking to J.A.’s Nugget and catching a cab. I didn’t see a bus during that whole walk.

Spent some more time at the Fitz that night and enjoyed the band a great deal. I even got them to play “Sultans of Swing”. I had heard them play that piece the night before and knew they did an outstanding job of it.

Fitzgerald’s has been basically unchanged since I started coming to Reno in 1985. I hate to see this nice old place closing. Not only because I’ll miss it but now that whole block will only have the little Nugget to remind us of Reno’s former glory.

31st

Not much more to say here. Had breakfast at the Eldorado’s Buffet, did a little more losing and caught our late morning Allegiant Air flight back home. Oh yeah, I left my cell phone charging in the room. Trying to get it back, I’ll let you know…

* Actually , I love the Peppermill’s and Western Village’s wild neon and wouldn’t change a thing.

Sounds like a pretty good tour, though the "Bus Service" seems rather lackluster.

Glad you could bask in some siren-song Fitzgerald's. With any luck, I may get one more crack at it, though it will simply be a reminder of past glory.

Downtown Reno, we hardly knew ye.

You really get around of all that Reno/Sparks/Tahoe has to offer, and with public transit no less!

Glad to hear John is alive and well (through your visit), I miss his posts of late.....

Hi RenoLady. Sorry for not posting more, but due to a couple of inappropriate posts, I was forced to ban myself from the board for a short time. I'll try to be nicer in the future.

It was great to see BC Dave again last week. Charlie and Higgins were also happy to see him. For a while, Dave was the birdman of Reno. It was a shame we didn't do the bar golf course, especially considering the fact I had the Peppermill place flags at each bar. The Fireside was a fine substitute, with the $1.50 imports and all the shrimp and ribs we could stuff down.

Thanks for the company and trip report, Dave. I suppose I should apologize for hijacking your thread in order to avoid the necessity of banning myself again. See you and Mrs. Dave in a few weeks, maybe?

Did you get your cell phone back, Dave?

I don't know why John made me moderator of this board since I am the primary driving force that thinks he should be banned.
I only let him stay on because of his close (humm) association with BC Dave.

Anyhjoo, Dave, enjoyed your report. Your trips are always successful even when not Financially so.
Thanks for writing and don't lose our address.

Hey gang, thanks for all the great responses. Mommy2boys, I hope you have a fun trip. Looking forward to your trip report.

John, Charlie and Higgins, thanks for your hospitality. Janice thought it was great that you had taught Charlie to say Hi to her.

My cell phone is Fed Exing it's way back home thanks to a nice fellow in the Lost and Found department at the Eldorado.

Yes John, a trip back down there soon remains a good possiblity. Probably not in time to enjoy the band at the Fitz though.

Hawk it was great seeing you at Shooters again. Even if you got some weird looks, I thought it was cool the way you can smoke a whole pack of cigarettes at once!
