With the Nevada fog slowly clearing from my mind, I take keyboard in hand and begin the last ritual of my latest trip to Reno.

Monday, Oct. 22nd
My friends and I drove thru the border at Blaine Washington and caught an Allegiant Air flight to Reno. The flight is full (mainly Canadians, I think). We landed in Reno and took a cab to the Sands. Check in was quick and friendly. The rooms were clean and bright. We played a little (full pay) VP Jacks or Better at the downstairs bar in the “small casino” area. A few of us walked over to the Cal Neva and had the “Beer and Taco” special at the sports bar.

We went our separate ways after agreeing to meet at the Eldorado’s buffet for dinner at seven. I played at various casinos with little luck that day but the dinner was great and the beers were free (sort of).

Tuesday
Since we have made no plans for breakfast I headed to the Eldorado’s buffet for breakfast. Delicious as always! I played some video poker and Pharaoh’s Fortune at various downtown locations and had a bit of decent luck. At 3 P.M. I popped into John’s place and visited with him and Charlie and Higgins for a while. Around four we met my gang at the Peppermill’s Fireside lounge and enjoyed a few Heinekens and complimentary shrimp cocktails and appetizers. John and I then hit the casino for the free Heinekens and perhaps even some wins. The video poker was generous at the Pep that night with John getting at least ten “4 of a kinds” on Bonus Poker Deluxe. Tried a few slots too but they were being rude that evening. Around 2:00 A.M. I caught the bus back downtown and called it a night.

Wednesday
Our group hit the road in the morning, in a mini-van I had rented thru the net, and headed for Lake Tahoe. It was a glorious day and the views of the lake from Mt. Rose were spectacular. We proceeded down through Incline Village and to South Lake Tahoe along the Nevada (East) side of the lake. Oh - oh more casinos! We spent a few hours at Stateline and had a nice late lunch at Harrah’s buffet. Just the view from this place is worth the price of admission. But the food was pretty good too. We stopped at the Carson Nugget on the way back to Reno. This place has a nice laid back atmosphere, good video poker and really good coffee shop. You could get an”Awful Awful” there for $3.99 or so. We returned the van and did some more gambling in Reno. That night a friend and I had the War Won Ton soup at the Eldorado’s coffee shop and it was great.

Thursday
After breakfast a couple of us set off by city bus to south Virginia St to do a little shopping. He was looking for a novel which he found at Barnes and Noble and I was looking for a couple of gifts to take back home. He headed back downtown and I continued further south. Got some good deals at “Big 5 sports” and then headed to the Atlantis. I had some good luck there at “Super Times Pay Multi Strike Poker”, “Free Bee” and good ole “Pharaoh’s Fortune”. I walked north from there and ended up at John’s again. After a brief visit during which I crashed John’s helicopter a couple of times I had to rush off to meet my gang for dinner. Harrah’s buffet was the planned meeting place but I got there a little late and the gang had given up on me and the buffet. There was a 2 for 1 coupon in the “Best Bets” magazine for that buffet that evening and the line up was huge. I was to find out later that they had all gone o the Nugget for an “Awful Awful”. Myself, well I guessed they might have gone to the Eldorado’s buffet so I went there (didn’t find them of course), but stayed and made a pig of myself.

Friday
We were all up fairly early and met at the same bar in the Sands for a bit of video poker and coffee (with a bit of Bailey’s of course). A quick cab ride to the Airport, a slightly delayed but excellent flight, a short line up at the border and we were home. Wah!

All in all, this trip was a really good time. This was also the first time in 25 years of coming to Reno that our Canadian dollar was at par, or even a little higher than, the American dollar. A few years back all I could get when exchanging a Canadian $20 was 12 dollars U.S.

It's conceivable that I could be back in Reno really soon!!

Thanks for the report, Dave. Yes, we had a good time that night and the helicopter still works just fine. I got the new one, but haven't had time to play with it.

And the best part, everyone, is Charlie, Higgins and I get to enjoy Dave's company again Tuesday, and this time he's bringing his fabulous wife, Janice. It's so exciting! The birds are preening themselves, and I may even take a shower.

I enjoyed the trip report!

I'm bringing a bunch of family to Reno in February, they'll be staying at the El Dorado. I've never stayed, or eaten there, how does the buffet rate? I've had most of the buffet's in town, and think the Pep's is the best, with the Atlantis a close second, are they comparable?

I love Pharoahs Fortune. One of my fav games. It sure can piss ya off though when you get into the bonus and give you no multipliers or free spins.

Thanks for the report, Dave - a pleasure, as always - but not even a stop into Shooters? You're not losing your edge, are you??

Also, by the end, were you up, or down? Or was it the type of situation where the next morning, you groggily pull out a mess of wadded-up bills, make a rough calculation, and conclude that you more or less broke even? That used to always be the case for me....no big win or loss, but plenty of action!

Great trip report as always Dave. How did you like flying Allegiant Air? I am actually right between Sea Tac and Bellingham and I would like to give it a try sometime. How was the Sands? I really do enjoy staying there! Are they staying busy?
Thanks again for the report.

Thanks for the favorable comments gang!

I did make it into Shooter's, but only for one drink. Then some of their regular customers came in and told me and my friends to go drink at one of the "namby pamby" bars across the road. We thanked them for the advice and on the way out left a generous tip for the big quiet guy in the corner who was sharpening machetes.

The Eldorado buffet is very good and is right up there with the Peppermill's.

The Sands was doing a good business and was very pleasant to stay at except on the last night my heater/air conditioner broke down and the room got quite hot. This will not sour me on the Sands though, I've always really liked the place.

Flying with Allegiant air was just fine. They are definitely a "no frills" airline but you're in Reno in 1 hr and 20 minutes so who cares? Their service is a great boon to Vancouver B.C. residents who haven't had direct flights to Reno for years.

Alison, Pharaoh's fortune isn't being as good to me (or John) as it once was. Bonuses are harder to get and not as rewarding when you get them.

None of us came out ahead this time unless you convert the free beers to their cost in Canadian pubs. Given that, we're all way ahead.

BC Dave

Wait, who needs John, I keep forgetting the power I have as a moderator. Now I might have to address this heinous situation so as to preserve the integrity of the board.

Now, check this???
"*Flapping fortnightly to RREENNOO! "

I may need to call a committee meeting to ascertain the credibility of such a plagiaristic effort on the part of my Canadian brother.
(And, Dave, don't think we cut you slack because of Janice. That is unfair tactics)

Ah, well, gee gosh, Dave, I guess that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. so I guess that makes me flatulent or something. I'll have to consult with my linguistic advisor. (So, whadda you say, Stan?)

I never shudda had that last beer.

Hawk, I think you've flown so high that the oxygen levels are making you giddy - welcome to my world!

Your linguistithenics are in excellent shape; don't change a thing!

In fact, your prognostications do indeed make you flatulent, as well as abundant, redundant, and land-down-underant.

Shiver me timbers!
