Living in North Carolina, gambling trips are well planned trips. Vacation time and gambling budget limits us to usually 3 trips to Reno a year.

We do not have easy access to any casinos (Indian or other casinos) that don't require time off work and hotel.

When we go, we play hard, drink too much, don't get alot of sleep. It's a great time!

Gary and I often thought "What would it be like if we had the jobs and incomes that we have now and lived in Reno? What would our gambling patterns be?

I'm curious what do you think you would do if you had to travel and plan a gambling getaway trip and then you moved to Reno? What do you think your gambling pattern would be?

Hi garyandsharon,

Just my two cents...I've been dealing with the exact same thing..trying to relocate to that area and wondering what it would be like (somewhere in the Sierras - between Mammoth, Reno and Tahoe). So far I think I'd be a WRECK with the gambling patterns but everyone's saying that no matter how much you vacation or road trip there it's always different when you actually LIVE there...things tend to tone down a bit. Still though I'm the same way, here in Florida I just work all the time (and surf) but when I go out there it's like a nonstop party, no sleep, too much vodka, etc!

It's definitely worth checking out jobs similar to what you're doing now, only out there. It could work to your advantage. I've found the pay for my job field seems alot better in comparison to here in Florida and rent seems to be the same if not cheaper. My biggest problem so far is that I either keep getting stamped "OVERQUALIFIED" or people don't want to deal with someone who's relocating that far - too much risk. I'm getting tempted to just pack up and go (that's how I got here to Florida from North Carolina myself but it took me 8 months to find a job!) One of my friends put it best..."You can sleep on the beach, but you can't sleep in the snow!" All my friends out there have promised to watch over me regardless. If I wind up in Reno I think I may call the Peppermill and ask them if I can just move in and pay rent! People do it. I once bumped into another snowboarder in Tahoe who was from Santa Cruz. He'd move to Tahoe for the season, gamble EVERY SINGLE NIGHT, and eventually got enought comps at Harveys where he could stay the whole season for free.

Yeah, I'm gonna be a wreck!

Garyandsharon,

I actually kind of fit into your scenario a little. I use to visit vegas 10-12 times a year (many of those actually for work though) and then moved to vegas over 3 years ago.

I now travel to reno for my gambling trips......sure I gamble some in vegas, but they just do not offer the types of comps to locals that I want/expect (free rooms, free meals, limos, shows, etc) It was actually kind of sad, since I had a nice host and all at NYNY in vegas. I even told him when I moved that my wife and I would still like to spend some weekends at the place and that I would keep up my normal levels of play when we were there......he just said sorry, we cannot comp locals that way.

Reno takes care of me much better than any vegas place ever did

Ryder

You hit it on the head with your comments.

We are retiring to Durango Co. in a couple of years. We were exploring spending winters in a warmer climate than 8,000 feet. We were getting the feel of being local Reno residents in the winter. We will still go to Reno, but as out of towners.

Sorry NYNY didn't give you the comps that you earned many times over after becoming a local. Must be rule of thumb. Our host at the Peppermill said out of towners and locals are in different categories. Now I have a much better understanding. Thanks so much

I think that it would take alot of the fun out of it. The fun of wanting to be there, planning the trip, thinking of the games you will play is the most of the fun. That feeling when you first arrive that fate has not dealt you a hand yet is so fun.

If you live there, it is just too close by. You either will quit wanting to play so much, or go broke playing too much. I had some friends in Las Vegas and they say it was sad to see people move in, and 2 years later have to leave due to bankrupcy due to gambling.

I love to gamble, but cannot live in a place it is too easy to get at, or it becomes something that I want to do too much. I think that you will find it like that also. Keep the trips, they will give you better memories and be alot more fun.

Garyandsharon,

Spinner is right about some folks losing control and gambling away all their money. I've known a few of them myself. I also know a few folks who have lived her for years and have never put a coin in a machine.

When I moved here in 1982 (right around the time Jerry was born), the extent of my gambling was loose change in VP machines and maybe $20-$40 once a week with a group of friends. A few years ago, I discovered the Peppermill and started playing frequently. I didn't think it would happen, but now it's kinda boring. Even when I win a lot, that feeling of elation is no longer there. Jerry and I went to the Pep the other day, and the gambling sucked, but the company was great as usual.

When I lived in Riverside, CA, my wife and I made weekly trips to Vegas for a while. It was always exciting then, but not so much now.

Gambling or not, Reno can be a really fun place to live. I'll be here for the duration, unless Hawaii calls. Keep watching for VisitMaui.com!

I call myself Renolady, not because I live there, but because I WANT to live there. I have lived there twice, 2 years 1993-1995, and then 1 year, 1999. Both times were temporary, internship with the government out of law school (didn't pay, so I worked at the casino's at night). R and I are going to move there within the next 3-10 years, depending on job availability, we both work for UCD, so it's hard to leave those benefits!

We go to Reno once a month, 2 hour drive. We always feel like it's home. When we lived there, we would gamble most days, but short periods. I would get off work (Peppermill/Atlantis) and get a beer and sit at nickel video poker until R joinged me. Sometimes he'd come in, sometimes I'd play a fiver and head out to the car. On our days off, we'd walk different local areas, Tahoe, Carson City, Sparks, Baldini's or go downtown on a Monday after all the Californian's had left, and empty the machines. Well, not empty.

Player's cards were new, but comps still found their way to us. We rarely paid for a meal. I was a tipped employee, $150-$300 a night, 4 days a week. Our condo cost $600 a month, we had no food bill, life was easy.

Sharon, you ask how it would be different. The main difference, for us, was the excess. Since you lived there, you didn't feel like you had to put another $20 in that non paying machine, instead, go home, it would be there tomorrow, and maybe your luck would have changed. Buffets? We learned how to get one plate, choose one cuisine and skip dessert, since they were free, we didn't avoid them. Drinking? same thing, free tomorrow, have the one or two quality beers or cognac, but you didn't have to drink it all on a work night, now on your days off....

We never got bored with all gambling, just some games. For instance table games bore me now. I know basic strategy well, but there's no excitement. Forget about Keno, my numbers never came in. (I'd watch them the first few months I worked in the casino). I like video poker, I LOVE penny slots, however, I'm weaning myself off them, giving lectures on the loss ratio, ect...

Reno has the best weather, over 300 sunny days a year. Windy, yes, but not much snow, usually dumping it on the Tahoe side. They had their "100 year snowstorm" a couple of years ago, so we're good for a while. : )

Reno's housing is correcting, when it gets back to fundamentals, we'll buy a condo, in anticipation of the future move. Until then, it's weekends and holidays!

Once the novelty wears off you won't do much gambling at all. It isn't that much fun if you have to get up the next morning and go to work. On your days off you will go into the mountains or up to Virginia City. If you do go to a casino, it will be the one that is most convenient to your neighborhood. You won't go downtown at all, unless you work there or there is a special concert you want to attend. You will go to bars and restaurants that are close to home. You might find yourself playing video poker at a local bar rather than a casino. The odds aren't as good, but after you factor in the time and gas needed to drive downtown the entertainment value is satisfactory, and many bars will comp your drinks.

You won't have any real vacations, like a cruise or a trip to Mexico. Instead, half your vacation time will be spent going back to your former area to visit family and old friends. The other half will be spent being a tour guide and chauffer for them when they come to Reno to visit you. You will learn to avoid special events, HAN and Street Vibrations being good excuses to visit the Bay area or Yosemite.

But when you do get a hankering for some casino action it's all there for you, along with more entertainment options than any other city of comparable size. The weather is great, not too hot in summer and mild in the winter. If you do like snow you only have to drive a short distance into the mountains for world class skiing and snowmobiling. All in all it's a nice place to live.

Wow, you really nailed that one, absolutely true. We have to make sure our condo has two or more bedrooms to accomodate the visitors.

I also have to agree 100%. Living in vegas we have visitors all the time. It actually becomes a pain in the ass more often than being fun.

Thanks for the comments! Y'all gave us a lot of food for thought. Like a buffet - I'm sure we'll pick a comment or two and think that's the plan for us. The next day we we'll pick another item from the posted comments. Geeesh - this is going to be tough - Too bad we don't like RVing. As close I'm going to get to an RV is to catch a ride to a casino for a comped room.

Thanks again

Sharon

John: you have a typo above. Did you mean, "1892" ?

"Jerry and I went to the Pep the other day, and the gambling sucked, but the company was great as usual."
John: I wholeheartedly agree!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BTW, the claw marks are gone. No infection or "chirpees" yet.
That's a relief since you told me it was "untweetable".
