Development of the new Long's Drug Store at 2nd and N. Sierra downtown started out with a big row with the city over whether there should be another off sale liquor license downtown. When that was resolved in Longs' favor construction of the store began. It looked like it was ready for occupancy last April, but nothing has happened since then.

I had wondered what was going on, and this morning's RGJ had the explanation. The building where Long's is located used to be the Riverboat Casino. Although the casino is closed the owners have kept their unrestricted gaming license for the location. For its part Long's refuses to open without slot machines, which would mean two gaming licenses for one building. The authorities aren't too sure that is permissible, so the doors will remain locked and the shelves empty until the stalemate is resolved.

Ahhh, progress, ain't it grand?
