Thirdly, just to spend time with 3 of my kids, I stumbled to the BJ table late one night at the Tuscany Suites in LV. (A great place to stay). I bought in for $100, played an hour or two and walked away with $276. First time I've played in years. BJ still pays 3-2, unlike the Reno rip-offs which abound around town.

Special to us was the 61 people who showed up for five days to honor us on our 50th wedding anniversary at the Tuscany Suites.
We have been richly blessed with great family and friends (including those I have made through this board).

My wife and I celebrated our 25th anniversary at the Tuscany a year ago last May. We also found it to be a nice place, except for the fact that my brother (who had driven in from Michigan for the occasion) had his car stolen from the Tuscany parking lot while we were out doing our renewal ceremony. We found their security staff to be very unhelpful and uncaring. (He got his car back about 10 days later, thanks to the LV police.)

When I was in LV in April, I found that almost all of the strip casinos and many of the downtown locations were using the 6:5 blackjack rules. I did not find it as prevalent in Reno when I was there last November. Has this changed in the last several months?

Glad you had a good trip. I wish my trip were sooner (still 130 days to go).

Jerry,
Congrats on 50 years!!! I love when i hear about people who have been married for such a long tine.

I hope that your wife will get better soon. Sorry to hear that she is in pain. Especially sincE you don't know what is causing it. that only makes it worse.

Glad to hear you had a fun trip. I have always wondered what Laughlin was like. Maybe i will go there one of these days. I don't know though, its hard for me to get away from Reno.

Always a great to hear from you! Take care of yourself and your wife.

I am headed down to the Oregon Coast this weekend. Can't wait. We are stying 1 night at Spirit Mountian, then Headed to the families house for 4 days. Hopefully Chinook Winds will be nice to us this trip. it sure was horrible last Feb.

For those of you who have never been to the Oregon Coast, it is beautiful. You must go there!! Here is a couple of pic's i took of the beach from our family home.

Take care!! Ali

It may have been a mini trip, but is a maxi report, for sure. .700 batting average??? No wonder they call you the hammer. Please give my regards to Becky and we hope to see you next trip. Charlie and Higgins send their best.

Alison...NICE pictures. Take away the water, add some bums and you have Reno.

Jerry, I'll take a break from my usual windbaggery to congratulate you on your 50th wedding anniversary:

Jerry good. Wife good. Happy Marriage. Me wish you best!

And as always, great trip report; thanks!

Alison, beautiful pics, though they make me think of Barney at Moe's Tavern, when the door was opened: "Aagh! Natural light! Get it off me!"

Real blackjack still prevails in Reno. The 6:5 variety is found mostly at Eldorado, Silver Legacy, Harrah's and Grand Sierra. Even there, you sometimes find 3:2 tables mixed in with the others. I just cringe when I see a full 6:5 table right next to an almost empty 3:2 game. The sheep just don't care how badly they're being sheared. The other casinos are mostly single deck, 3:2 blackjack, double on 10 or 11 only (but double on any two cards is also available), dealer hits soft 17, split pairs but can't re-split aces.

Additionally, I will mention that I have never, ever seen 6:5 Blackjack at the Cal-Neva - just another tribute to its greatness!

That explains why I didn't see much of it. I almost never go to the El Dorado, Silver Legacy, or Harrahs. I did stay at the Grand Sierra last November, and don't recall seeing 6:5 there, but I only played there a little.

One worry I have: Last November on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe, one of the dealers told me that the Tahoe Biltmore was going to "Las Vegas rules" early in 2007. I asked her what that meant and she said she didn't know, just that things would be changing. I am hoping it means being able to double on any first two cards, and not 6:5.

Thanks for all the information. It was most helpful.

Hey Jerry,

Thanks for the awesome trip report, and congrats on your wins! It looks like you hit some good places in LV, I'm a fan of the Station Casinos myself. Have you ever tried the rooms at the Fiesta? I was thinking about checking them out on my next trip, but I keep getting offers for Red Rock, Boulder and Green Valley Ranch so I haven't quite made it back there yet. Been meaning to check out Barley's too. Hope your wife will feel better soon.

Alison - your photos are awesome! That's a mighty nice piece of shoreline there, and waves too! Hope your trip is good.

Way to go, Jerry. Don't you just HATE having to fill out those tax forms on a big win like that? Wait....YOU FORGOT to tell us the denomination!!

Just what kind of special drink am I supposed to order from RENO'S BEST BARTENDER, MARK AT THE SIENA ?

And Allison: I'm going to beat you to Reno by 30 days. I leave day after tomorrow and I already have the outline of the first chapter of my trip report. Let's just say my idea to get new shoes for my car was not my best idea. I hope those tires are speed rated since I need to make it from Portland to Reno in under 9 hours.

From your pic of the beach house, I'd say Lincoln City maybe between Taft and Nelscott. How do I guess THAT? I used to spend Summers at my Uncle's motel across the street from Bailey's Dock (now Mo's) in Taft.

I'll be doing an in depth investigation of Reno's Mormon invasion, Shooter's without the shooting, and have a side trip to the Genoa bar (Nevada's oldest) all planned.

Wish me luck.

JD

ps: ooops, I meant to say Mormon CRICKET invasion...my bad

Well, I enjoyed the responses.
Thanks to ALL for your good wishes.

Nice pics, Ali. The entire state of OR is gorgeous.
JD: Just about anything I ask Mark for is good. We have been ordering Copper Camel Coffees (can you say Slippery Nipple?) which IMO should not taste like coffee. Mark's don't.

Flgambler: Yes, I did stay in the Fiesta rooms. They are slightly below most of LV and NV rooms we stay in. Just don't feel the same. They do not compare to Sunset. They don't seem as clean.

Funny thing: My wife plays only a little. She gets a free room (one night) offer from Fiesta. I play 10 times as much and I get a $40 offer per night. Go figure. So we only stay one night at a time. When we inquired about a second night in her name, they quoted us $70. We could stay at the Tuscany Suites for that.

Glad you guys enjoyed the TR. I enjoyed writing it but I enjoyed the trip a lot more. I am ready to return but my wife looks kinda sidewise when I mention it. It may be a few months unless lightning strikes.
In spite of fact that I am only 6 hours away. Waahhhh!!!!!!

Sorry, John and Hawk. I apologize. No whining on this board.

jerry,
Since your wife does not want to go back to reno anytime soon, maybe you should convince her to let you go for a "guys" trip? Sounds like a plan to me. Wink

Ali, if you are saying you "want to be one of the guys", I don't think she'll go for that idea.
