Saw this article on the Gazette website and I thought I would share it as I know there a lot of Fitz Fans out there. I sure do like it there and hope it is a good thing for both Reno and the Fitz. John and Remano you guys probably have a much better idea if is or not. I am sure willing to go down to Reno and check things out if you guys need me to!

It's good that there will be continuity in the managment of the Fitz after the owners take over. At least, that's how it seems to read.

I wonder if they're still planning the "boutique" (read pricey) remodel.

For you Fitz regulars, are they still sending the Free Rooms or Free $75.00 meal flyers?

I have not recieved any flyers from them in some time. I have not stepped foot in there though in at least 2 years.

We used to get the offers for rooms or free meals but for the last year or so it's just been free or reduced rate rooms, depending on the season. They seem to have eliminated the option for the food comp.

So, what would you do if you owned the Fitz and had the money for development? It looks like you would have the current building, the two buildings behind it (Old Reno and the Masonic Lodge or whatever it was), and the former Golden Phoenix buildings across the alley.

I would abandon the street along the tracks where the valet is now located, and totally integrate that side of the building with the soon to be built plaza over the tracks. That would make the casino convenient for foot traffic from the special events on the plaza.

That means the valet and hotel check-in would have to be moved. I would knock down the two back buildings and put the entrance there. I know the Lodge is the oldest building downtown and some say it is historic, but there is a difference between being historic and being old. It hasn't been occupied in a long time, it's not suitable for retrofitting and I haven't heard any Renoites talking about anything historic that happened there in the past.

The entrance would be covered and there would be a pool and deck on the upper level overlooking the plaza. If not there, then it would have to be on the roof. In any case, the place has to have a pool. Moving the entrance means the valets would have to go around the block to store the cars. This would be transparent to the customers because they just drop off the car and enter the building so it doesn't matter how long it takes the valet to park it. Returning the cars would follow basically the same route as they do now so again that wouldn't affect the customer.

Finally, I would try to have the alley right of way abandoned and connect Fitzgerald's and the old Golden Phoenix along Virginia Street so it is one continuous casino. Right now the alley is "T" shaped with the leg of the "T" running from Second Street to Fitzgerald's south wall, and the top running from Virginia to Sierra. It can't be completely closed because the businesses on the block rely on it for deliveries, but I think they could live with an "L" configuration. This would allow Fitz to expand the casino and have a much more attractive presence along Virginia.

I suppose none of this is really feasible but I thought it was interesting to speculate.

Like Barb said, the food offer is now $50. However, that birthday/anniversary offer can't be beat! The rooms are free (over the weekend we're there 7/6/-7/Cool and includes cocktails AND all food including Limericks.

Remano: I like your speculation on what Fitz might do with their property, but you know, they never seem to do what makes sense to the consumer. Their own agenda/greed gets in the way.

I wonder if the historic bldg is incumbered in some way, you know, can't touch the outer structure....
