This morning's RGJ reported that a development company has purchased the entire block north of W. 5th St. between Keystone and Vine. That would put it right off the freeway exit on the west end, and kitty-corner from the Gold Dust West at the other. While they haven't made any final plans, a spokesman said a casino with hotel is one of the options being considered.

What do you think? Would a casino/hotel in this location be attractive to visiting gamblers? Personally, I would like to see it go up closer to the existing downtown, but I think there is a problem putting together a large enough single parcel at an affordable price.

I don't harbor much hope for the new development. They picked a bad part of town. You can't walk to it from downtown and they mentioned condos. The condo market is already doomed in Reno.

Well if you can't walk to it from downtown that's too bad, because I was getting kinda excited. I'm a product from the old Pioneer, Onslow, Riverside, Harold's Club, Nevada Club, Comstock, etc. I'd welcome a new casino that's walking distance.

What are we going to do about Bob?

He can't remember The Money Tree, Virginian, The Mapes, Old Reno, Colonial Inn, , Sundowner (best prime rib), Prima Donna (Eddie's Fabulous Fifties) or Flamingo Hilton.

I can't speak for Bob or John (hell, he can barely speak for himself), but I started coming to Reno when I was TWO. I distinctly remember walking along Virginia Street and seeing (and smelling) the doorless entrys to Harold's Club and Harrah's. I could never grasp how the aircurtain could keep the weather out.

My parents would leave us out on the sidewalk and beg for money while they gambled... well, that's my story.

AND there was a kid check baby sitting service in Douglass Alley (between Harold's Club and Harrah's) with a theater and very early video games (mechanical car racing, etc). You dropped your kid off and got a ticket as if you checked a coat. Mom almost had to leave me when she couldn't find her ticket... now that I think about it, maybe she lost it on purpose.

I remembered all those other places, too, that were mentioned. Just didn't frequent them like the ones I mentioned. Actually most of those I mentioned only go back 20 years. Some even less. As for the old folks' home, the way my right leg's bothering me all of a sudden today maybe that IS where I belong!

Sure, John...Lake's Crossing was a real happening place. I knew it when old man Fuller owed it. As I recall, they ended up tearing it down and replacing it witha newer building.

My good buddy, James Henry Monk was a regular there. You've heard of Monk, haven't you?
