I just got back a few hours ago, so everything is still pretty fresh in my mind. I’ll do a chronological order, it’s easier to remember.

We left Thursday, the 8th, at about 3 PM. From here in Davis, it’s about a 2 and ½ hour drive, in GOOD weather, and it had started to pour. I emailed my husband, “R”, and he said, yeah, let’s leave early and get up there before nightfall and slicker conditions. He was here in a couple minutes, our bags were already in the trunk and we were on our way.

Fitz’s gave us 2 free nights and one at $36. It also included a $50 meal at their “nicer” restaurant (read: linens, low lighting and bread before you order), and a $100 bill. The drive was easy, no snow yet, just rain. We were at check-in at 5:30 PM, and I asked for an upgrade to a suite. We had only stayed in their regular rooms, and since there was no charge for the next couple of nights, why not splurge a little? Yes, we can upgrade to their mini-suite for $20 more a night, or their BIG suite for $30. “What’s the difference?” I ask. She said there was no comparison. The larger suite was two rooms, and included a living and dining room. Hmmmmm…..visions of Vegas style suites with fancy bars and plasma TV’s came to mind (I spend way too much time reading trip reports). I eagerly said “the bigger one!” R just stared at me puzzled, I’m usually pretty frugal on these things. After she hooked us up, R noticed a little sign saying that the water would be off from 11 PM until 5 AM that night. WTF?! I’m in a suite here for the first time at Fitzgeralds, and it doesn’t have water? R questioned her about a discount, she laughs and we make our way to the room.

Now, I don’t want to put anyone off about the suite, but really, it was no big deal. Well, it was “big”, basically two regular rooms, with one acting as a living room and dining room, and the other was the regular room with bath. The fixtures were basically the same, the linens were beige and thicker (though we didn’t get to use them because of the no water thing which continued on and on….), we looked around, shrugged at each other, dropped the bag, and were at the bar on the second floor casino in a few seconds. We had the plastic badges, letting all know we were “VIP’s” (heh) but more importantly, we got our drinks free for the asking, at any bar, without having to wait for the cocktail waitress. However, we generally only used them on the trip out of the room before playing, as the cocktail waitresses are very good at the Fitz’s.

The Fitz has a drawing every night at 7:00 PM, your entries our based on that days play. We only got about 30 minutes of play in before the drawing, so no luck there. We move our play around between video poker and penny slots. We really only want to play penny slots, but know we’d like to have some shot at taking some money home, so we always put in some time on the quarter video poker. Honestly, we’re pretty intelligent folk, we’ve read the pros on how dumb slots are, but how does that compete with “Godfather Garlic?” or the Frog bonus? Or Cleo telling us she’s going to make that “double for you!” So, we win at video poker and then go dump it in the penny slots.

Friday night we go to sleep only down about $50 each, and that’s after $2 tips for our drinks all night, and $1 tips to the cashier. We see the cashier about every 30 minutes, as we tito out after any doubling. About midnight, we grab a French dip from Molly’s for the room. We get back to no water (yeah we forgot), and go to sleep. Around 6 AM, monsters are trying to come out of the walls and toilet. No, it wasn’t the 4 beers and two brandies, but the workers trying to get the water back on. We slept fitfully through that, and woke again at 8 AM. Ah-h-h-h, it’s past the water dilemma, we are all good. (Warning this next part may offend the more delicate) I make my way to the bathroom, had just sat down, when the toilet began shaking and groaning. Now, I can’t begin to explain how scary this really was, let’s just say it’s good I was where I was when it happened. After I compose myself, I call down to ask about the water situation. The front desk told me cheerfully the water was back on. No-o-o-o….. it was not, I tell her. She tells me to call housekeeping, I call housekeeping, who tells me the whole building is without water, ew-w-w-w-w….are they still cooking in the restaurants? She then tells me to call facilities. I call facilities, they inform me only rooms ending in 27 and 28 are without water, something about a riser. How long? oh, maybe an hour.

R and I do NOT want to stay in a suite without water, no showers, cleaning up-nothing! So I call the front desk, ask her to move us where there IS water, before Californians start arriving (it was Friday). She doesn’t believe me, has to confirm the no water thing, and then moves us to a regular room. My need for a suite had passed. We move quickly, shower up, and head to Cal-Neva for their Big Win breakfast.

The Big Win has 3 eggs, 3 bacon, 3 pancakes, hash browns, and toast for $4.25. We share it, too much for one person. We don’t play much at the Cal-Neva, so we thought we’d give it a try, as offers can be pretty good from them. Everything we played we won on. We thought we’d discovered a secret! They’ve really cleaned up the place, and the food is good, if only their rooms weren’t so bad. We saw a sign for free beer for playing, so we hit the player’s club to check on it. They checked our card, gave us two 4-packs of neatly packaged Budweiser, and a $10 food comp. This on 3 hours of play at penny’s. We won $100 bucks too.

We hit Harrah’s to make sure and not lose our points we’d earned at Caesars in Vegas this last September. It had been my birthday, we had seen Celine, and played about 4 hours on VP (loaded) 50 cent level. That’s not a lot of play, but should have warranted some mail. We never got anything. I had called them, and they said I showed no tracking and would have to come in. So…we went in, R stood quietly off a distance, carrying two packs of bud, balancing a drink and a cigar. They had 4 windows, only one for the lowly gold level, which had the new guy who couldn’t figure out the new system. A ½ hour later, it was my turn. I gave him my driver’s license, and he found 5 accounts for me, dating back to the early 90’s. Over the year’s they never can find me in the system, and open a new account. Apparently, he found them all. He looked at me like “I” had done something wrong and he didn’t know how to proceed. “Look, I just want the one account that has my current address, so I can get mailers”. He told me he’d have to go into each account and read it to find that out. O-K-K…., he began checking, and found my current address, only it didn’t have any points. Hmmmm…what about the points from September? Those 4 hours? I cycled about $5000 through….He then went through each account looking for points. He found none, now it’s been another ½ hour, the people behind me hate me, R hates me and I hate Harrah’s. “Can I have my driver’s license please?” He hands it to me, I turn to leave, he wants to give me a player’s card, I want to get the last hour of my life back, my earlier winning high had been wiped out. Must leave here, must get the mojo back, flee all that is Harrah’s…..

We dropped our beer off in the room, and headed down near the cage for the $100 bill they promised us. As Barb said, the line-up isn’t necessary, they continue to give the money for two hours, yet folks lined up as early as 15 minutes before hand. We comfortable sat, played and drank until 5, when there was no line, and then I went and collected my money. Tonight we were using our $50 dining coupon at Limerick’s. It’s more than an Irish Pub, it has a nice atmosphere, nicely paced service and good food. Since their best meal is their prime rib ($8.95) it was going to be a challenge to meet the $50.

We headed into the pub early, they don’t start seating until 5 anyway, so we had a fresh restaurant, staff and food. They serve this neat 3 oz flight of three of their primo wines for $10 (Rodney Strong cab is one), we shared that, an appetizer, and each had the prime rib special. Nice meal, didn’t use the whole comp. We played until the nightly drawing, didn’t win again, and decided we’d turn in early and watch some TV. We still had the same money we’d come into town with, and felt like that was a huge win!

The next day, we went back to the Cal Neva for breakfast and to smugly empty their machines. Since we had the $10 food comp, we’d just get one more and use them both for dinner that night on their $9.95 specials: 1 pound Shrimp, or 1 pound of prime rib, or New York steak. It only takes an hour of tracked play and 50 points (you keep the points). So…we went back to the same machines that had been so nice the day before. Now, you all know what happened, we lost and lost and lost. Here we thought we’d figured something out, yeah right. Well, we got the other $10 food comp, don’t ask what it cost. Time to go.

We headed up Virginia to the Peppermill. Wow! They continue with the neon and darkness. It’s nice, just not for everyone I think, especially those with sensory over-load disorders, of which, I self-diagnosed myself this weekend. Now don’t get me wrong, I love the Pep, the rooms, the food, and I’ve had several royals there over the years. Heck, I worked in the buffet as a server just 7 years ago for a year. I know this place. But, after looking around at the additions, we headed up to the Atlantis. I also worked here about 14 years ago, as a server, in the Purple Parrot, I have friends there still. I don’t like how the Atlantis is laid out, seems you’re always bumping into someone, but we do win here, and I LOVE the oyster bar in the skywalk. We now had a little over $100 cash, and needed to hit an ATM, we only started with about $350 total, and were surprised it had lasted this long. R said, well, let’s try our usual machines first.

Oh yeah! What a decision! Our usual machines are the triple play quarter video poker by the bar and the wave machine. We don’t load them, somewhere between 4 and 10 quarters a time. Believe it or not, we only feed them $5 at a time. This is because hitting the max play button on accident, is less painful this way. I was accidently playing Super Triple play or something, I usually play DDB. Anyway, I hit 4 fours with an ace on bottom, for 800 quarters, $200 bucks! R is playing deuces wild, we watch each other play, one: to slow the play down and two: to keep it interactive. I hate when he plays deuces because it is so boring! He hits for 4 aces and gets 20 quarters…yawn…. After smugly getting my $200 win, I comment that he can’t get high dollars on his. That was still hovering in the air when he hits 4 deuces for $150! Okay, we’re having fun now, can’t believe our good luck, and he hits for another $200 (he’d switched to my more volatile game). We had only been there for 20 minutes and we’re up $550! Life is good. We play back about $50 each, then started moving around. After another $50 loss each, we decided to walk with $350 of the winnings. We still had the $100, so we now have $450. This represents the $350 we came to town with, and the $100 Fitz’s gave us. Three days in Reno and we’re even. Now that’s a win!

We do the happy dance out the door, and head back to the Fitz to drop our car and continue over to the Cal Neva for dinner. We get there too early, and play for an hour. After getting seated in the coffee shop, R complains it’s too cold, so we move booths with their permission. He takes our order, only we’re in the wrong place, the pound specials our upstairs in their “nice” restaurant. The Copper Ledge, I think? Oops! Sorry. No problem. Off we go. I didn’t even know this restaurant existed, but I’m glad I found it.

It’s an open restaurant above the casino, and you get to look down and eavesdrop on people’s play. I guess it used to be open, and full of noise and smoke, but it now has tinted glass and a really neat atmosphere. Again, soft lights, linens, many employees hovering, and all that attention folks crave. As you can tell from my comments, I am not one of those people, as I have spent just as many years working in restaurants as I have working in other professions, I have no illusions about what the servers think, where the food comes from, or what the “back of the house” looks like, trust me, don’t ask. We are pleasantly surprised that the $9.95 specials are served here, but open the menu anyway. The filet mignon and scampi is only $12.95! Regular price. It’s $29.95 back at Fitz’s! Okay, two of those. AND they have Kendall Jackson cab for around $4.75 a glass. Huh? That’s what it costs to buy it at Safeway and drink it in the parking lot. Two of those please. The pours were huge, and must have mostly emptied the bottle. The food was fine, more coffee shop quality in a fine dining setting, but aren’t most of them that way? Think about it, one truck delivers the food, one set of refrigerators and freezers store them. Do you really think the prime ribs are segregated for each restaurant? Now, I have worked at both the Pep and Atlantis, and “some things” are segregated, King crab in the steak house, snow crab in the coffee shop ect…but not too much. We use our $10 food comps, and some cash and a good tip, and off we go.

We now have about $380, and head back to the Fitz’s. We play a while, lose again at the drawing, and sit down to listen to George Pickard (spelling?) They have the quarter triple play video poker machines, but since George is singing, they’re full. On the other side is 50 play VP. R tries penny loaded deuces wild, at $2.50 a pull, I try 14 hands loaded, at the nickel level. ($3.50 a pull). I lasted quite a while on a $20, and then got dealt 4 to the royal. Okay, 14 chances……Royal Flush! $200 baby! We’re now up to $500, and decided to go play what I really like, Super Cherry. See, I was happy for years with some black jack, a little pai gow, and mostly video poker. Then one day, about 4 years ago, while leaving the Brew Pub at El Dorado, I sat down to finish my Big Dog Ale (in a to-go cup). There was no VP to be seen, so I sat down at this pretty Super Cherry machine. I put in a $5 bill, and hit 5 lines -one nickel a line. Like most newbies to slots, I didn’t know what I was looking at or what was a winner. Within a couple of pulls, I hit 5 Super Cherries, 25,000 nickels! Yup, that’s $1250.00. The machine locks up, I’m confused, than elated, and finally hooked forever more. Since then, I’ve given that money back to the machine (plus) but still love it and chase the jackpot.

Since we now have $500, it’s our last night and we still haven’t taken any money out, we decide to play our favorite machines-loaded. We know we won’t win on penny’s so we usually only play about 45 cents a pop. Not tonight, $1.50 a pull-loaded. I played Super Cherry, R played Frog Prince….for 4 hours! The swings were crazy. But when we hit, we hit for $50-$100. We never went below our stop point, the $350 we brought to town, and sometimes got up to $800. Fatigue won out, and our enthusiasm began to wan 4 hours in, so we called it quits and went to bed with $740.

We didn’t sleep well, too much excitement, drinks, ect…. We had been periodically checking the road conditions, and they had been open since Thursday, but here this Sunday morning, chains required. We’ve learned the hard way not to head up the hill on Sunday’s (or Monday holidays) when there is chain requirements. Better to stay over, and leave early the next day. I called for another night, and we went back to sleep until noon.

It’s funny, when you first hit the casino, you can’t wait to give them your first buy-in. It’s almost like it’s in the way of your “real” money, and must be promptly and obediently turned over and then sound money management followed. When you win, you must try something new or bold and give some back right away. However, the closer you get to going home, the more the “won” casino money becomes “your” money, and must be protected. Therefore, we slept in, hit the buffet, and drove to the Galena area to look at condos. We’re not buying yet, the market is still too over inflated, but we’re enjoying the “falling knife” of prices and will buy in a few years.

We stopped at the strip mall on Hwy 431 for bottled water about 2 PM. When we returned to our car, R’s key wouldn’t turn the ignition. Not that it wouldn’t start, it acted like he had the wrong key. He furiously tries to turn the key, shaking the steering wheel and looking at me more distressed as the minutes passed, seriously, minutes, I think he even broke a sweat with the effort. He said the key had been fighting him the last few weeks, and must be worn off or something. We call our mechanic cousin in Vacaville, who tells us it could be the ignition, requiring the steering wheel to come off and a new part. Maybe it’s just the key, what about my key? Oh, the set of keys I took out of my bag to make room for the cigars last night and are currently back at the Fitz’s? Wah-h-h-h-h!!!! It’s Sunday, in Reno, as far as you can get away from downtown and STILL be in Reno and we’re broke down.

We call for a tow, AAA says 45 minutes. R and I head to the Starbucks across the mall, you know, there really IS one in every mall. We try to figure out what to do. My key might start it, but it’s a $50 cab ride away, each direction. And what if we’re wrong? Mechanic cousin is 170 miles away. Okay, let’s tow it to the Dodge dealer, we start shaking, they have us at their mercy, out-of-towners with no options. I come up with a plan. We see that the dealer is off of Mill, hey that’s near the Hilton! Let’s have him tow us there, say good-bye to him, and we’ll walk to the Hilton, catch bus 18 (it used to be that) and take it downtown, we’ll get my keys, reverse this, and see if it’s a key thing, or an ignition thing.

With a plan, we relax. I sit on the hood, my face up to the sun, smelling the lake just over the hill, and pretend I’m at Zepher Cove on Lake Tahoe. An hour passes, R has been fighting folks off the parking spaces next to our car, leaving room for the tow truck, man folks were pissy! Okay, drive another few feet for the many other parking spaces available, we’re broke down, you’re not, shut the @#$% up! I get hungy, hike over to a Chinese restaurant, wanting chicken and rice, to find it closed. Damn! I want chicken, hey! Raley’s has chicken! Sure enough, their rotisserie chicken was hot and ready. You think it’s weird that I buy a whole chicken and snack on it in a parking lot while waiting for a tow truck, yeah maybe, but it was good! We eat half, throw the rest away, and check the clock, all the while, R tries his key, just in case. It’s now been an hour and a ½, and the tow truck guy calls, another 45 minutes he says, which in tow truck driver-eze means at least an hour. I spy a sports bar (gotta love these diverse strip malls) and we head over.

We mosey up to the bar, I see they have Sierra Pale Ale, we order two. The bar has these old quarter VP machines, buy-in? I ask. $10 bucks, she answers. Cool. I’d always rather gamble for my beer. After a ½ hour of 2 quarters at a time VP, R hits 4 fours and an ace for $80 bucks. I lose, we finish up, tip well and head out. It’s now 4:30, no truck driver, and our hiking plan/ bus/Hilton thing is looking a little tighter. I ask R, try the key one more time, he does, it starts, we jump in and split. What the hell was that all about? We spent Sunday afternoon in the strip mall on 431, basking in the sun with a Starbucks, picnicking on Raley’s chicken, sucking down my favorite beer, and making a $50 profit. Sure, we didn’t plan it, but it was a pretty good afternoon after all, AND we had preserved our winnings! We called AAA to cancel the tow, she was apologetic about our being left hanging for hours, and we passed the SOB ½ way back to town. I hope he doesn’t get paid.

We get the car back to Fitz’s, I run in and swap out R’s keys for mine, in case that’s the problem, we want valet to have the good set. We try to win at the same machines. That’s not happening, and slow play about $75 each for a couple of hours. It’s time to either quit or go into the preserved winnings. We see our fav bartender, say hi, try a $20 each and I hit a 4 of a kind. We take those winnings and look for something new. We find Hot, hot penny’s. R’s game just went into bonus after bonus, mine was a dog, but that’s okay, he’s playing 90 cents a pull, to my 30 cents, over the next 2 hours we take out enough to get us back to our highest point +, going to bed with $800! We got up early and headed down the hill. We go home, unpacked, cleaned up and were at work after lunch.

Unbelievable trip.

Since we played at such high levels for so many hours, we ran 10 grand through at Fitz’s. This gave us another 100 O’Lucky dollars. And since the first two night were free (they didn’t charge for the suite due to the water issue), and the other two nights were $36 and $32, we used these points to cover those charges. Our buffet was 8 points, the sandwiches were another 15 or so, and gas vouchers were 20. We ended up with about the same points as we came with, and spent no cash at the Fitz’s. We tipped a lot, but we always like to share the money. Good karma. Basically, this trip was free and we brought home $450 more than we took, okay, there was that little car incident, but the $450 should cover that, if it’s the ignition problem.

What’s crazy is we’re really considering heading up this weekend too. Its R’s birthday tomorrow and we still have some free play we never used in Carson and Tahoe. And today, Fandango sent us a birthday gift of their free buffet for two, and a birthday cake. We still have $20 free slot play, and a $20 match play. We’d just go to Carson and stay one night (yeah right, it’s a 3 day holiday for us)…….

You know, that generated a W2-G. I kept it, along with win/loss records, to show I had no "win". I didn't claim the "win" since I had a "loss". The next year I got a nice $300 tax bill from the feds, and a $250 bill from the state. Ugh! Rather than go through an audit, I just ate it. Now, I try to play things that don't pay over $1199!

Did you not claim the win on your taxes at all? Usually you claim it on your taxes under other income, but then you deduct it later on under misc deductions. . if you never actually claimed it, then that is probably why you are getting the letter form the IRS. Claim it then deduct. I have never had a problem with that.

I went short form. As far as i could see, you could only claim the win, but there was no place to take the loss. So, I hung on to the proof of win/loss, thinking that if they nailed me, I'd do the audit, go long form, and owe nothing. When I got the notice, and had the right to a hearing, I flaked and just paid....

RenoLady, thanks so much for the excellent trip report. It sounds like you all had a blast. Sometimes things like the car incident are all part of a good trip. And congrats on your wins, and staying ahead. I'm now addicted to those Hot Hot Penny Machines. I'd definitely follow your thoughts...go back this weekend!

Regarding taxes, yes, $1199 is the magic number. Anything over and the IRS gets their way. Just a couple of days ago, I <sadly> had to give back about $1300 due to that $7000 jackpot I had on the Ten Times Pay back in September. Oh well it was fun holding onto it for a while and it could've been worse, the money I normally get back from work cancelled it out and I got a whole whopping $28 back. A neighbor told me that if you have a win in Nevada and live in another state, there's a way you can avoid getting taxed...almost sounds too good to be true, but I'm looking into it either way.

Great trip report. Go back this weekend!

Hey Alison,

Old, not really, but senile, oh yes! Something about how you can leave the $$ out there and then go back later to pick it up? I'll have to find out (but doubt it...)

I am with Alison on this one. The minute you fill out that W2G a copy is sent to the IRS. I would really like to know a way around it,

However, I really have no need because my gambling losses always exceed any w2g's that I have had to claim (but one day I am hoping for one of those big wins...... 60K or more)...LOL

Renolady,
Wow thanks for a great trip report! Sounds like you and R have a great attitude and role with the punches. Neat that you did so well! Do you guys ever go in and check out the Siena? Will you ever go back Harrahs? I can't say I blame you! Thanks again for sharing!

Thanks for the nice replies everyone!

floridagambler: When you play the hot hot penny's do you load it up? R did great at the 90 cent (30 x 3).

Dave: You know, I like to "go with the flow" and Harrah's seems to put obstacles in my path, so for now, I'll just sidestep that corporation. Let's see how their pending sale washes out... As for Sienna, I want to like it. It's a pleasant casino, nicely located by the river, and the limits are fine. I just don't have a draw there. Meaning, they aren't offering me any freebies, but I haven't played enough there to warrant any.

Yesterday I made reservations for the City Center Motel in Carson for this weekend. It's where we stay on holiday weekends, same old $49 regardless of the holiday. AND that includes a dinner, free drinks, $4 back and some keno coupons. Maybe just one night (Saturday), that Monday traffic back will be ugly!

Reno Lady, I too want to congratulate you on a great trip, and also thank you for a well narrated TR.

I particularly enjoyed reading that you had some good meals at Cal Neva, even though the play kinda went back and forth, because I'm going down there next month and plan on staying there for the first time. I'm a little sceptical now, since you reported "if only their rooms weren't so bad".

My favorite paragraph you wrote was the one where you say when you first hit the casino you can't wait to give them your first buy-in. But the closer you get to going home, the more the "won" casino money becomes "your" money. That rang so TRUE to me, how one looks for other diversions the closer one gets to going home if they have "win" money.

Thanks again Reno Lady. I just hope I'm not too disappointed with my room at Cal Neva next month.

The rooms are old but clean. We've always gotten the cheapy, "comped" rooms, which are fine. Maybe they have different levels of room that are there for the asking!

Make sure you get a Player's card if you don't already have one. You can earn 2 $10 food comps and 2 4-pk's of beer for very little play.

Thanks for the nice comments!
