My friend and I are making plans for our annual trip to Reno for the first round of the NCAA basketball tournament and just wanted to give a heads up to anyone else planning on making the trip. The USBC bowling tournament is going on at the same time, and rooms are getting hard to come by, and much more expensive. Silver Legacy, Eldarado, Circus Circus, and Peppermill's websites is showing no rooms available from Thurs. through Sunday. Harrah's and Seina have rooms but they are almost $200 a night. We found 2 cheap stays, Cal Neva and Fitzgeralds, they're $50 for Thurs, and $90 for Friday,

I'll vouch for that. I'm staying at Cal Neva and made the reservation about a month ago when the rates for midweek were only $39. According to what I've seen on the web, CalNeva's only got 180 rooms so they'll be filled soon.
Another crimp to throw in, we'll be there during St. Patrick's Day.

I decided to again check the room rates at Cal Neva for March Madness and wow! They're still going up. Now they want $49 for March 14th, which used to be $39. March 15 is $54 instead of $39, and the two weekend nights are $94 each instead of $54 (or possibly it was $59). Then on Sunday the 18th they finally go back down to $34 again. I wonder what's going on with the rest of the hotel/casino rates during that time?

I got mine for a little bit less, but not much. I hoping to get a cheaper room offer in the mail from their slot club, but nothing has come yet. This is by far the most I've spent for a room there during the same time frame, in the last 8 or so years. I hope this is just because of the bowling tournament, and not a sign of things to come. Between the higher rooms rates, higher gas prices and questionable weather, its getting harder and harder to make to drive to Reno.

Bob, are you going for the NCAA games? If so, where do you watch them? We usally hang out at the Cal Neva to take advantage of their cheaper drinks, and some what generous drink tickets for sports bets made.

gotorenotahoe.com has the following rates available for March 14-19: Sands midweek rates are $35, Fri./Sat. $75; Sienas midweek rates are $55, Fri./Sat. $79; and at JA Nugget midweek rates are $35, Fri./Sat. $75. I've used their website several times before without any problem. There is however a $25 cancellation fee. Hope this helps some of you.

Sorry, I posted the wrong rates for the Nugget. They are $39 midweek and $65 for Fri./Sat.

Darline, I checked it out and gotorenotahoe.com rates are better than what I was finding on Expedia or the hotel websites.

Thanks for the tip

Nah I don't gamble on sports. But I'm going with a bunch of guys that do. Quite honestly I'm not sure where they'll be hanging out. A lot of us go our separate ways and then get together for meals. I chose Cal Neva this time because I wanted to get rated there...I find their blackjack and video poker very favorable.

Thanks for asking, Mike.

Bob, I wouldn't get to excited about being rated at Cal-Neva. We've been members of their slot club for about 6 years, and have seen very little benefit. They offer cash back, but not much as far as comps. I've seen them offer food comps at the tables, but but its been only for $10 or so. We get a postcard several times a year, but it is only for discounted rooms, and maybe a free breakfast. Not sure if you can get your room comped, they seem to treat the hotel as a seperate entity. Then again, we're by no means "highrollers." Maybe other members of VisitReno can give you more input.

Sure I'm open for input from anybody here about the CN. I used to be a regular at the Circus, until it seemed that some of their video poker went downhill. That's what caused me to consider CN.

When I had the conversation with the lady that made my CN hotel reservation, she told me that once I'd stayed there, I would probably start receiving some room offers. That seems to coincide with what you're saying. Just how good the room offers will be I don't know. Hey listen, Mike. I'm not a high roller either. I just thought that since CN seemed to have some favorable video poker and blackjack, maybe it oughta be a place where I should focus more attention. But now I'm seeing maybe it'll be a fruitless venture. 'Just thought I'd give it a try and see what happens.
