That is fair enough. Since all of a sudden we seem to be talking about North Lake Tahoe, I will go ahead a give a few impressions. The nicest place by far is the Crystal Bay Club. They have really cleaned up the place, added new machines TITO, and they bring in some great bands almost nightly. They have a nice set up for listening, and the bands play a lot of new and original stuff. A much younger crowd at Crystal Bay over the rest of the places.

The Biltmore is nice, but it is getting a little old. They need to do some work in there, but they have a really nice bar upstairs. Room rates are really cheap, and include a full breakfast. They also bring in free entertainment- mostly cover bands.

Cal-Neva is also very old looking. They are working to change it over to timeshares or condos, so don't expect many changes here. Room rates are high, and it is kind of a dead atmosphere in the evening.

The Nugget is just a tiny place, with old machines, dirty rest rooms, but they have a huge selection of very fine beers. If you are into rare beers, this is the place.

I have to be in Sacramento next week, and I was thinking about taking an extra day off and staying a night at the Biltmore. Or- I may head over to Reno.....we will see. Choices are good. Cool

My buddy and I usually spend a week each year on the North Shore, specifically because we like the Crystal Bay Club and the Tahoe Biltmore. (We like the Cal Neva, also, but it has been keeping erratic hours for its pit the last two years. No table games at 5:00 p.m., on a Monday????)

I really fell in love with the Crystal Bay Club soon after it reopened. It was the friendliest and cleanest place in the area. In the last couple of years, though, there has been a subtle change. The dealers, with one exception, were very reserved (several of them are from Romania and have limited English skills) and might have well as been dealing machines. Very little interaction. The one exception was extreme in the other direction. Very loud, raspy voice, and called everyone honey. She was a nice lady, but just about drove my buddy crazy. He couldn't take her voice at all.

Last November, we "rediscovered" the Biltmore. It usually had more people and was livelier. The dealers were much friendlier and, by the end of the week, were calling me by name when I would enter the casino. They had a free blackjack tournament that was fun (I placed third on my table, so didn't make it to the finals). And, even though it was free, they gave about $350 in prize money.

If you want good food, the new steak house at the Crystal Bay Club is outstanding (although not cheap: around $225 for two of us).

I also drove about five miles down Highway 28 and went to the Hyatt. It is a small, quiet place. The dealer wasn't too outgoing until I hit a blackjack on a fairly large bet, then made a $5 tip bet for him on the next hand. He got friendlier and I tipped a bit more, so it turned out to be a good evening.

We also visited the South Shore one day and ended up having a really good time at the Mont Bleu. We had primarily gone to see what changes had been made (about five years ago, when Mount Bleu was Caeser's, I had one of my biggest winning sessions ever; since then I've been fond of the place!). There weren't a lot of changes, although the casino floor had been rearranged a bit.

Our next trip to the North Shore is Nov. 3-10. I can't wait!!

That was around $225 for two (or approximately 112.50 each). And, that was total bill, including drinks, side dishes, and tip. While steep, it's not out of line for a good steak house.

Not ME!! I wasn't there, no one saw me and I don't even LIKE art.

"STATELINE -- More than $25,000 in art was stolen last weekend from a gallery at MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa, the Douglas County sheriff's office said.

Two statues by the late artist Erte were stolen from Galeria Noir in the South Shore casino late Jan. 20 or early the next morning."

Had to laugh, I am doing taxes and just saw a receipt for a dinner for two at our local steakhouse...for $285.00...moments before I read this! Shocked I commented to my husband, "That must've been one heck of a steak!"

Back on topic, When you go to Tahoe for the first time, take the time and drive around the lake, stopping to enjoy the views along the way. I'm not sure how long it actually takes, but it took the better part of a day for us. It is beautiful, and very romantic.

My husband worked on a house for the owner of Harvey's for a few months in 96, and we lived there for while. We stayed in condos and houses from Zephyr Cove to Pioneer Trail. We loved a chicken place in SLTahoe called "Killer Chicken", anyone know if it is still around?

Other than skiing and gambling, I also recommend a boat cruise. There is also outlet shopping and a movie theatre in SLTahoe. The mountain biking is awesome. My husband still talks about Mister Toads Wild Ride, which is the name of a trail.

I was wondering...Are there tours of Emerald Island? That would be cool.

Makes me want to plan a trip...!

Hey JohnTS71, Yeah the Gondola at Heavenly and the boats are both pretty cool. I think a gondola ride is around $20 and it has a lookout area/observation deck at the top. The dinner cruises are something to do, but expensive! Two winters ago I went on the one that takes you to the North Shore and it was like a party boat, lots cheaper and more fun.

If you're not skiing or boarding, at least try snowmobiling...check http://www.laketahoeadventures.com/snowmobiles.php it's totally worth it.

You may want to skip over Montbleu, they turned out to be a waste...

Stacey - yes, Killer Chicken is still there in South Lake, it's awesome!

Floridagambler, Do you happen to know if you can take the gondola at Heavenly Valley during the ski season (even if you do not ski)

just to enjoy the view and have lunch or a drink

Ryder, yeah you can either get off midway at the observation deck (which has a sport shop and a bar) or go all the way which lands you in an area called Adventure Peak which is basically the Gondola entrance to Heavenly. There's a good outdoor barbeque pit/grill there and also last year they enclosed the outdoor bar inside a heated plastic tent, now it's called "The Umbrella Bar". (Still lots of seats outside too). It's a cool area to hang out in before going back down, and no skis or boards necessary. Only thing I'm not sure about is if a gondola-only ticket only covers one ride or gives you unlimited access for the day but I think they just let you ride it as much as you want. The Umbrella Bar has BIG Red Bull & Vodkas, Jack & Cokes, etc.

As I mentioned in another post, we were disappointed with the dinner cruise, but only because we had to spend half the trip inside, eating. I would heartily recommend the cruise, but next time we'll have our dinner on shore. But that's just my opinion. To each his own.

Floridagambler, Thanks for the Killer Chicken update! Now I have got to plan a trip, if not for gambling than for some of their Garlic Smashed Potatoes! Yum!

Just curious- what are your plans? I know you got a lot of advise and asked a lot of questions. I assume Mont Bleu at Tahoe and......?

Have a great trip. Exclamation
