in your opinion do you like north or south tahoe?

whats the weather like there mid march?

whats the best places to stay?

how are the casinos?

Defintely South Tahoe. That is where the bulk of the casinos are. As far as the weather, i am not sure.

I think Harrahs Tahoe is the nicest place. large rooms with 2 bathrooms.

I agree with South Lake Tahoe. The weather will be a question mark right up to your departure. Our opinion on the rooms would be Harrah's, Harvey's and whatever they calling the Horizon now days. I would guess the Horizon would be the less expensive and the rooms are OK. We don't think much of the gambling up at Tahoe as table Minni's are rather high for our budget. The Horizon did have $3 Craps and $5 Blackjack. The slots seemed to be tight everywhere.

Most of the Shows are of the Cabaret quality, with maybe a few big names occasionally on the weekend. You would have to check the Entertainment area here to see what is going on.

Tahoe is great and no matter I'm sure you will have a wonderful time.

The two places are quite different. If you are looking for action, shows and nightclubs south shore.

If you are looking for a quiet layed back place- North Shore. I like the Hyatt Casino and lodge- very quiet and upscale. I have stayed also at the Biltmore, and played at the casinos there, but they are no where in the class as the south shore.

Hey, if you are at Lake Tahoe-- it is all good.

Let me be the one to strongly recommend the North Shore. It has lots of casino action with the Cal Neva straddling the stateline, and then the Biltmore (formerly the Nevada Lodge, which formerly to that was the Biltmore), and the Crystal Bay Club. Lots of history around there, and the atmosphere is slower and less pressured than the South Shore. You can have a drink and actually relax a bit, and the views are nice also. If you want to drive about 5 miles you can go to the Hyatt Lake Tahoe, which is nice, but by itself along lakeshore drive.

I think that the limits on craps, blackjack and roulette will be lower than the South Shore, and they don't really try to get the big gamblers here. A drive up the Mt. Rose Hiway will yield some fantastic views of Lake Tahoe with only a short drive up the hill. North shore is also closer to Squaw Valley, Truckee, Hiway 80, etc if you are coming in that direction. It is only about 14 miles from hiway 80 from Truckee.

North Shore is just more intimate than South Shore, the casinos won't get you lost in them, and the places are manageable. The road in and out is not bad, with only one steep area between Truckee and North Shore that could cause some sliding around during the Snow. South Shore is much more treacherous in the Snowy Weather and this should be taken into account. Usually if you reach Truckee, it is an easy drive to Reno since it is on the leeward side of the Sierras, where from South shore you still have to drive many miles on a very curvy Hiway 50 to Carson City, or Around the lake to North shore and then onto hiway 80.

I'd say south, although north is nice too, only been thru it once. South has alot more action and is alot easier to get around without a car. If you're going in March, even though it's not winter be prepared for anything, it can be snowy there one minute and sunny the next. For the casinos, the Horizon and the Lakeside have seemed to have looser slots and VP (although the Horizon got tight on their comps this past year). Don't stay in any of the local motels behind the casinos, they are mostly crackhouses and you can get the same price at the casinos if you look hard enough.

I have to second the motion for North lake Tahoe - it's still got that old-timey feel, while having more than enough machines, tables, and bars to slake one's thirst for things Nevada.
Sure, South Tahoe is bigger and more like - well, Reno, which is right nearby...

North Tahoe is of a kind with Carson City, I'd say, where you get that rewarding sense of having encountered something off the beaten path.

And that Hyatt in nearby Incline Village is quite nice - civilized, upscale, and so forth - although I'd have to add that it seemed more affordable a few years ago than it is these days. My guess was that it had to do with 9/11, when suddenly non-air destinations for travelers from California became more attractive - but if that were true, Reno should have enjoyed a renaissance, and seems to have received quite the opposite. The Hyatt must be doing something right!

I guess the good news is that anyplace in the area will still provide plenty of fun 'n games.

thanks for all the info. I know there are a lot of websites that talk about tahoe and what we can do in tahoe but id like to hear from you.

well for other things to do besides ski:

GAMBLE (I left you a list of the casino hotel URL's in your other post when you were asking about Montbleu), hike, rent a snowmobile, dinner cruise around the lake (the Tahoe Queen, EXPENSIVE but fun), since you will be there in March they might have a few places for jetski and windsurfing rental but the snow will still be around so you'll probably need a wetsuit, check out some of the neighboring places like Reno, Carson City, Gardnerville, go fishing, hit some of the bars and clubs and restaurants. Everything on the South Shore is within a 2-3 block stretch.

Plenty to do there besides ski or snowboard (although that's mainly why I go)...

We dont know where we are staying at atm...we are kinda leaning towards monte bleu.

is there any reason to go to reno?
about how far is it from south LT?

You can get a non-skiing pass to ride the Heavenly gondola which offers some very scenic views of the lake. There is an observation platform about 2/3 of the way to the top where you can get off and look around. You can also continue up to the top to watch the skiers but you can't see much of the lake from there.

I believe you can also ride the Squaw Valley gondola to the site of the former Olympic village. You can probably confirm that for sure and get prices at their web site.

I think you mentioned this a honeymoon trip for you. ?? You are thinking about spending your honeymoon in Reno over Lake Tahoe?

Just my opinion: Big mistake... Lake Tahoe is a much better place for a honeymoon. And- Yes, I do like Reno.

I agree with CaSwede, and I like Reno too! If this is a honeymoon trip for you I would strongly suggest Tahoe. It's much more scenic. You can even get married in the casinos on the Nevada side (although I guess you could do that in Reno too).

And I agree, boards like these are great sources of info. I met all these kind people here a couple years back that have made my trips much more successful (even when I lose!)

I got married and honeymooned in Tahoe in 96. We always go back there on our honeymoon every year. Tahoe is a very romantic place. I would strongly suggest going there for a honeymoon. Me and the wife always enjoy ourselves there. On the other hand we go to Reno alot more than Tahoe because the gambling is alot better. For Romance think Tahoe, and for gambling it has to be Reno.
