Hi John and everybody,

It's been a long time but I'm back! Hope everyone is doing well. Long story short, my computer died oh, about a year ago and I've just been using the one at the office so haven't had much time to hit the boards. Finally got a new machine a few months back and have been battling it out with the different internet companies trying to get a decent connection here on the beachside. I got stuck with dial-up...YUK...but it's better than nothing...

Anyway I know I have a lot of posts to catch up on and this info may already be posted but can anyone tell me if they ever built/put up/opened the Station Casino that was coming to Reno? I'm planning my annual 2 week Reno/Tahoe trip for January and was wondering (haven't been back since March of last year).

And since this is the RENO board it may not be the appropriate place to tell everyone, BUT...I just got back from Vegas and hit a $7000 jackpot on a $1 Ten Times Pay Machine. Now I get to take it all to Reno and hopefully win again...

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Good to see everybody.

Hey Alison,

Great seeing you too!

Not sure about accomodations yet but I'm almost positive it'll be the Peppermill. I liked it that one time I was there even though I didn't win squat. And I haven't stayed anywhere else in Reno except for the Gold Dust West and the Sands so I'm ready for something more upscale. I do know that I'll be in Mammoth Lakes snowboarding for the first week and that the scene in Tahoe has gotten totally cheezy...NOBODY is sending comps anymore, lift tickets are super high dollar, and my once treasured casino resort, the Horizon, turned their backs on everybody! They're not sending coupons anymore unless you're a gold player. They did that remodel earlier this year now they think they're the gods. And over $100 per weekday night ANYWHERE you're a member of the player's club is unheard of. The old Caesar's across the street, which is now Montbleu, is sending a free night here and there (unbelieveable because I've never played there yet, only when it was Caesars) so I'll see.

I'm thinking about bagging Tahoe altogether and spending the second week in Reno where I could just take the shuttle to Mt. Rose to snowboard every day. It will be so much cheaper and I haven't had a chance to get more than one weekend in Reno yet at a time.

Hope you and your husband get a chance to make it back for your anniversary.

Congrats on the big win!! Don't forget to put some aside for taxes next year.

To answer your question, the Station Casino is far from open. They have actually announced plans for two new casinos, one just off Mt. Rose Highway and 395, and the other across S. Va. St. from the convention center. They will build the Mt. Rose facility first, but right now I think the NIMBY folks are up in arms about it.

Many of the major ski areas run shuttles from Reno. I have heard that Northstar has one for free, and the others are a nominal cost or package the transportation with the lift ticket. Check their online sites for more details as the season approaches.

I have a trip planned to go to Tahoe and Reno this Feb.

I was signed in on the Harrahs site, signed in under my total rewards card, and put in the dates i was looking for. I ended up with a Executive Suite, 3 nights, Free. I was shocked as the Feb offers were not online yet. Im not complaining. So our plan is to be at the Pep for 3 nights, then Harrahs 3 nights. I can hardly wait.

We are thinking of renting a car. Will we need a 4 wheel drive vehicle to get around In February? We were going to be there the 16-22

You will probably be OK, but it all depends on the weather. You should be OK in Reno regardless. If it snows the highway patrol may close the pass to Tahoe or restrict it to chains or 4 wheel drive only.

Yeah i am not too worried about reno. I mainly am worried about the pass to Tahoe. We actually are now considering driving from Wa to Reno/tahoe. We have a Jeep Wrangler that we might just drive.

Hey Remano,

Thanks for the info and good to see you. Right now, my rep at H&R Block is telling me to put alot of it aside for taxes, they're not quite sure just how much but I got taxed on a $1500 jackpot in Tahoe a couple years back and they got me for about $250 so I'm trying to estimate it that way. Regarding the Station Casino, I actually found some further info in another post. I'm going to sign back onto their website to see how that hearing went with the city went or is going...still making up my mind about the resorts too, looks like the Pep has some good package deals going on.

Alison,

You may want to check out some of the different rental car websites to see if anyone has any specials going on...if you don't wind up driving your Wrangler you may be able to get a SUV/4x4 for the same price as a car. I just found a really awesome deal with Budget using my USAirways Frequent Flyer (Dividend Miles) card for my January trip. Them along with Hertz give you 50 frequent flyer miles per day, plus a really huge discount (sometimes up to 55-60% off). I'm getting an SUV to go to Mammoth with thru them for $240, 7 days! (Taxes not included). I rent cars alot and have raked up more frequent flyer miles with these people than I have actually flying. Alamo seems to have alot of good online specials too.

An Executive Suite at Harrahs Tahoe for 3 days comped is definitely a good thing. They used to be good about free nights even for people with zero points like me but I haven't seen anything from them lately. The way things look now if I go there at all I'll most likely be staying in one of the dumpy rat traps behind Harveys, so I'm thinking more and more about Reno for that second week...
