Ok a trip report (not a moment too soon, it appears.)

Day 1

Our group of nine guys crossed arrived in Reno via South West Airlines at around 3:00 P.M. on Sept. 11th. We were whisked to the Silver Legacy via their shuttle and checked in went without a hitch. Not long afterwards we all met at the Cal Neva “Top Deck” to drink a toast to a friend that we lost suddenly at the end of April. At 7:30 that evening we met for Dinner at the Eldorado’s buffet. As always it was awesome!

I should explain that five of our group were down for a four day stag party. That bunch made Shooters “party central” for most of our stay. I poked my head into Shooters a couple of times this trip but the music, for me at least, was a bit to “thumpy” so I didn’t stay long. Also I may give a fairly accurate Reno trip report here but what goes on in Shooters sometimes has to stay in Shooters.

I gambled some that night but the results were less than spectacular.

Day 2

According to a plan we had worked out about a month in advance, we rented a large van and drove to Lake Tahoe. I volunteered to be the designated driver. All nine of our group came along. We arrived first at North Tahoe and went to the “other” Cal Neva. This is a nice old style resort for those who haven’t seen it. I relaxed at the bar with a coffee and played some quarter video poker which at first treated me well then quickly grabbed my $20.

From there we drove to Stateline at the south end of Tahoe. We all marched into Harrah’s and gambled for a couple of hours. I had my best luck of the trip here playing $1 video poker and got ahead close to $100. At five we all met at the Forest Buffet and had a really great meal while enjoying that spectacular view of the mountains and the lake.

Our last stop before heading back to Reno was the Carson Nugget. This is a neat old place that caters to the locals. Though we didn’t eat here this time I’ll give their Coffee Shop a plug since I’ve had good food at great prices here before.

We all climbed back in the van around sundown. The drive north to Reno was marred by a virtual storm of bugs splatting on the windshield while driving by Washoe Lake. I’ve driven by that lake quite a few times and have never run into that phenomenon before. We had to pull off the road at the nearest gas station to clean the glass as my visibility was quite restricted.

We got back to Reno at 9:00 and the party guys headed for Shooters. A friend and I walked to the Sands and played a little blackjack. It was fun but I’ve heard it’s even more fun if you leave with more money than when you started.

Day 3

Back for a full day in Reno. Had breakfast at the Sweetwater, and then a swim at the Silver Legacy’s pool. Although it was just past 11: 00 A.M. it was already hot out and the pool felt great. After a quick stop back at my room I headed for the Siena and took advantage of an offer that comped other hotel guests ten dollars slot change. Sounded too good to be true but they credited my River Card and away I went. Played some $1 Video Poker there and walked away up about $40.

I bought a bus pass and went to the Meadow Wood mall. I had a small lunch there at the Mexican place in the food court. I then walked to the Atlantis and eventually the Peppermill. I had intended to stop at some of my favorite bargain stores but it was just too hot (about 95), so I was glad to get into the air-conditioned neon heaven that is the Peppermill. I played some V.P. there but did not win.

At four I found myself and a few others from my group at the Fireside Lounge. We even found John there. Unfortunately we all found each other there a day late for cheap imported beer but we made the best of a tough situation. After awhile my gang drifted away in different directions and John and I decided to gamble a bit out in the casino and have our beers for free. John hit a four of a kind on some kind of bonus poker and got a decent payout.

We had dinner at the coffee shop and then I was treated to a visit with Charlie and Higgins at John’s place. Charlie really liked me and left his calling card on my sock. I took a picture of John with the two birds and I’ll post it on the web somewhere but I have to wait for some legal hurdles to pass. At this point the heat and the beers were getting to me so I bid farewell to John, Charlie and Higgins and headed for the bus stop back over by the Peppermill. It was odd to walk through a suburban area with this huge casino glowing brightly and towering over all the houses ahead of me. With the new multi level parking lot nearly completed, the Peppermill has become quite an imposing sight from the street. The bus came and I was soon back downtown.

Day 4

Mmmmm….steak and eggs at the Sweetwater. I’m going to miss those breakfasts. This was our last day in Reno and we decided to catch a cab out to the Grand Sierra Resort (formerly the Reno Hilton, Bally’s and if you go back far enough the M.G.M.). It was pretty quiet out there. A few of the guys played blackjack there while the rest of us plunked coins into machines, randomly, around the casino. I understand that the current owners have huge plans for this property….I hope they can make a go of it.

Halfway through the afternoon we went out to John Ascuaga’s Nugget in Sparks. This place was far livelier. I played some V.P. there and went up and down but mostly down. The others played blackjack and a couple of them did well.

We finished off our trip in grand style with an “Awful Awful” at the little Nugget in downtown Reno. I shared one with a friend and it was still plenty. On the way out I played some V.P. at the Nugget’s bar and made a small profit. Woo Hoo!

We were out at the Airport by 6:00 P.M. for a 7:50 flight that ended up being an hour late. After a bit of a bumpy takeoff on a very full 737 we had an uneventful flight to Seattle. On the drive home we started missing Reno. Guess we’ll be back before to long.

P.S. All those who served us while in Reno, be it drinks, meals or maid service were polite and gracious. Thanks!

BC Dave

Dave, thanks for the great report. As always, it was a blast spending time with you. What did you do to Charlie while I was in the bathroom? He keeps asking for you.

As for posting that picture on the internet, for some reason my lawyer WANTS you to.

Thanks Alison;
I took notes during my trip to help me remember the details when it came time to write my trip report. However I have not seen those notes since I got home. I suprised myself by how much I remembered. Incidentallly I saw one of your Pinball machines at the Grand Sierra Resort. I didn't try it though.

Thanks for the report as well Dave I sure enjoyed reading it. Heck I forgot what a trip report from Reno actually looked like! Confused Curious to hear what you thought about the Hilton I mean the Grand Sierra. Could you see any change yet? I am just hoping that they don't change their Sportsbook specifically. I have always loved watching the games there and the size of the place seems to help spread the smoke around a bit more if you know what I mean. Glad you guys had fun.

Hi Dave
The Grand Sierra Resort has not changed much yet and I'm afraid I didn't notice whether or not anything had been done to the sports book. There's new signs on the outside of the building but other than that it felt like the same old place.

Keep those trip reports coming everybody!

Thanks Peb! And I enjoy taking the trips. Writing the trip report a few days after getting back is a good workout for my memory.

Well, Dave - you sure know how to grab attention with your avatar (and ruggedly handsome looks). I like the message, too.

John, I used to be thrilled to see my avatars on your site. Now seeing my latest creation there embarrasses me a bit...but I'll get over it. In fact this avatar was quite easy. With a little bit of work they could get much worse.

YaaaY a new trip report. Thanks for taking time to post it! I seem to have a problem where I start a trip report and get to day 2 and can't finish it...LOL, I think I tend to put in too many details.

I'm missing Reno! I haven't been back since April (went to Vegas and will hit Laughlin next month), it's about time for a trip...I think my mom is missing me.

Glad you and all the guys had a great time!

Thanks Erin, for your kind remarks about my trip report. You're right, it's easy to get bogged down in details while writing trip reports, so I'm usually asking myself, "Is this of any interest to the message board readers?" As a result of this thinking I gloss over quite a bit of detail. But that keeps the report from getting too long anyway.

I've been home for two weeks now and I already miss Reno. I can sense another trip (and trip report) on the horizon.

Sorry Dave, I just examined the horizon and didn't see a trip report. However there was an object closely resembling a trip from Canada. Could that be yours???
