Man I’m tired! On Sunday, 3 days into our 4 day trip, I remember my sis saying that she was surprised she wasn’t feeling hung over after 3 days of drinking. I told her it was because she hadn’t sobered up yet! Yes, that was the theme of our trip.

On Friday, my husband (R) and I, loaded his parents (who had flown in from Spokane, WA) met up with my sis, picked up our son, and headed to our daughter’s house. 2 cars, 7 people and we’re on our way up the hill at about 10 AM. R’s brother was flying into Reno that afternoon from Spokane, so we were hoping there were no highway restrictions to slow us down.

The weather cooperated and we were checking into 2 rooms at Fitz’s. Using their Shamrock promotion, we got the rooms for a total bill of $116 for the three days for each room. We also snagged a free room at the Cal Neva on their birthday bash weekend. Also during this weekend, the coffee shop had a special menu where many entrée’s were 99cents, (cheeseburgers, bacon and eggs, sandwiches) and the “expensive stuff” (1 lb. of Prime Rib) was $3.95. This was truly a low roller delight.

On the way over to the Cal Neva to check into the free room, we saw a man down in front of the Nugget. My sis is an ER nurse, so she went into action until the paramedics arrived. We stood back and allowed her to do her thing, and I offered her my drink when she was done. Amazingly, on her way back from the Cal Neva after check-out yesterday, there was ANOTHER man down in almost the exact spot! She again took care of him until the paramedics arrived and gave report. Since it was Monday morning, she received no drink from me. Both men appeared to be having seizures, but were breathing on their own when they were transported to the hospital. The manager came out of the Nugget complaining that “this happens EVERYDAY!” hmmmmmm……what is the connection? The large Nugget Bucket drinks? The consumption of the awful awful burger, the need for the awful awful, but waiting too long and not making it inside? Hmmmmmmm

So now we’re checked into all rooms, we have our cursory drinks, one of us has saved a life, and it’s time to hit the airport for the final player. We play a while and then go in search of fish type food, as it is lent and some members must not only drink like fishes, they must also eat that way on this Friday. I’m really happy, because we discovered Molly’s Fish and Chips this day. On my God! $6.99 of fresh battered fish, go there right away (at the Fitz.).

Earlier in the day my son wanted me to play blackjack with him. I play basic strategy, parlaying half my bet after two wins. Pretty boring stuff. I end up even most of the time, since I quit playing after losing/winning $20. So playing blackjack with him was a giving thing. I mean, there was Super Cherry video slot just screaming at me. We visited about 5 tables across two casinos that had wonderful rules, grateful dealers (I tip well), and nice drink service, but alas, I lost a couple of dollars, my son lost ½ his day’s bankroll. I then took him to the penny slots upstairs at the Fitz. If anyone was around this weekend, that’s where we spent most of our time, cheering each other on our bonus rounds, drinking constantly, tipping well and laughing about anything. Pretty obnoxious stuff for the outsider, but what keeps us coming back as a group.

On Fitz’s Shamrock specials, they also give you a name batch that allows you to drink free, anything, anytime. My sis likes to drink more than gamble, so she was digging this. I found her and R’s brother at the bar upstairs drinking away. I joined them for some DB video poker and put a $20 in. Within a few pulls I hit a straight flush, 9-King, just one off the Royal. Cool! Then I hit quad 4’s and cashed out for about $150. While the hopper was filling I played the next machine over. I hit 4 aces right away. Another $200! My husband walks up, congratulates me, takes the coin over to cash it in (no tito here) and takes his hundred. I hit one more quad and then go and join the others downstairs for some fun music.

We all had a pretty early night, lost back what we were willing to, and started over the next day at 9 AM. Breakfast was at the Nugget, biscuits and gravy for $2 something, and pancakes and an egg for $1.49. In all the years I’ve been going there, it’s been belly up to the bar or stand and eat. This last year they added more seating right outside the diner. Nice….this last trip they added service. Not only does a busser clean your plates, deliver your food and get you what you need, there is also a hostess asking if everything is alright. I wonder if they’ve come to realize their existence is based on the diner, and will eventually replace all the machines with more tables, stretching out to the street. Has anyone ever been in there when there wasn’t a crowd?

After breakfast we decided to head up to Virginia City, as the day was sunny and we thought we’d go with it, rather than wait the next day and risk snow. I told everyone I had a list of places to go, provided by the good folks at Visit Reno, and off we went. They were instructed to look out for the wild horses on the ride up, but we didn’t see any. The higher we climbed, the colder and cloudier it became. As we approached the top, my group had turned into a bunch of 5-year-old whiners, “are we there yet?” Shad up already, look around at the view!

We found two parking places right outside of the Delta, and headed inside. We spent about a ½ hour inside, with my son, daughter and husband checking out the history. When we looked around for the others, we found them gambling, huh? Get up already, you can do that anywhere! We head across the street to the Bucket of Blood casino and they again immediately sit and gamble. By now it had begun to snow, so they weren’t interested in seeing anymore, sob….Off we went back down the hill. At least we spotted some wild horses. I will return with history buffs (like myself) next time….

Dinner this day was at the Fitz’s buffet. The shrimp were the large variety, semi-peeled and clean. The crab was a bit salty, and the mussels good. All for $11.89. After dinner, we moved over to the El Dorado where everyone won but me. I mean everyone! I started chasing losses so I quit early. Party pooper, cry baby, I was.

The next morning we had breakfast at the Cal Neva. Well, some of us had bacon and eggs for 99 cents, others had prime rib for $3.95. It was 11 AM anything goes! We all went our separate ways this day, with the guys at Pai Gow, the MIL taking a nap, and the sis shopping. My daughter and I pooled $20 each and teamed up on penny games talking and watching each other play. I played a Turkey shoot and won $35 off a bonus round, cashed out and put in a new $5. The next bonus round netted us $160. We took the almost $200 and played together the whole day. Dinner that night was back at the Fitz and my daughter and I split the money and went on our own. I continued winning the rest of the night. My other son met us in Reno this night, and since we hadn’t seen him in a while, we all hung out at the Keno lounge upstairs at the Fitz. Some folks were playing some 10 cent games, and I was tipping $7 a round for drinks. The cocktail waitress was happy and we were happy.

The music started downstairs so we headed that way and took over the bar. We played and tipped the singer and had a great time! It was short pay JOB, so we lost, but didn’t seem to mind at the time. You know how that goes. We called it a night around midnight, as the Spokane folks were leaving at 7 AM. We got them to the airport, slept a little more, and headed down the hill in the rain. It was only snowing a little at the top, and rain the rest of the ride.

Another trip down, I won some, but paid for most of the losers so I don’t seem to have any money. But I had a great time as usual. We’re heading up to Spokane next week, and have decided to fly out of Reno, better flights, cost, and well, we get to be in Reno coming and going. We were at the Shamrock level before this weekend, and after this hard playing trip, we’re at the Emerald level. At this level, they double every point you earn and give you more free rooms, ect.

I’ll note how that mini trip goes in a couple of weeks.

Great report, it sounds like you had a blast with your family.

I love the Cal Neva. Unfortunately, I found this gem too late into my last trip. We went there 2 times, only for an hour or two each time and I did nothing but win each time. Loved the slots! Much better luck than Harrahs.

Kudos to your sister, karma's a good thing.

Oh, I get antsy when playing at the tables too, those slots always seem to be calling my name! Laughing

Thanks guys,

Last night I booked the Fitz for the 12th and the 15, we're flying out of there to Spokane. It'll just be me and the husband, so a little more quiet trip....

Just for fun, you should play slots at Harrahs for a couple of hours and see what offers come your way. They really favor slot players, so I bet you would get some good mailers. They have remodeled all their rooms, so it's a pretty decent place to stay now. Their old rooms were horrible, blech.
