I wanted a few days away from family and work, so I took a trip to Reno Thursday 4-6 through Sunday 4-9.

Arrived via Delta at 11:30. I had bought rooms through Harrahs total rewards for $220 for 3 nights, including resort fees and taxes. I have learned to not enjoy Harrah's gambling experience, but went with the cheapest rooms at a downtown casino. I was able to check into a west tower king room at noon, which was nice. The room was small, with updated furnishings that were just too large for the room. there might have been 2 foot clearance between the dresser and the bed. the room was clean. Bathroom was clean, but in need of some caulking and smaller toilet. There may have been 15 inches from the front of the toilet to the vanity. I am a skinny guy and I barely fit.

First stop, Lunch. I went to Little Nugget to try Awful Awful. My first time. I have no complaints. It was good, and I really liked the fries. I liked the diner setup, and it was very busy.

Next stop Silver Legacy for blackjack. I played 2 hands at $10 a hand for 3 hours. I was able to stay even, and ended up ahead $50 when I walked away. Drank many miller lites. I knew I had some comps from my last visit, and I really just wanted lots of beef and salad. So I went to El Dorado buffet. It was good and hit the spot. Now I was ready for Cal Neva. Headed over there, again played 2 hands of blackjack for several hours. I was able to end the session even again. Having been up since 4 am to catch flights, I decided it was time to go to bed. Headed across the street to Harrahs, and felt the need to some craps. I played pass line with full odds, and place bet 6 and 8. I did this for 30 minutes and walked away up $160.

I woke up Friday at 7 am in the mood for breakfast, so I went over to Top Deck at Cal Neva. Steak and eggs $7.99. very good meal and value. I also wanted to play some poker, so I signed up for the 11:00 am poker tournament at Cal Neva. $10, and they only used 1 table. Players can rebuy for an hour if they lose out. Friendly table of mostly locals. comped drinks. I finished 5th. got outplayed.
I also saw a promotion for a blackjack tournament at Sands for Saturday, so I walked over signed up and played some blackjack for a couple hours and was able to leave up $100. that would be my last winning session for the trip Sad
In need of food, and wanting to eat at a deli, I took uber to Atlantis and ate at their Manhattan Deli. It was fabulous and exactly what I wanted. True fresh deli corned beef, with potato salad. My first time there, and will now be a automatic visit when I come back. I made it back downtown mid afternoon and played more blackjack at silver legacy and circus circus.
i did have a free show from Harrahs for The Rat Pack is back at their showroom, so I attended it Friday night. Very good show, and I love the intimate showrooms with tables and cocktails. I wish the option was there to see more headliners in theses settings.
Dinner was after the show at Top Deck. 8oz prime rib, salad and baked potato. Serving size was just right. I went downstairs and played more blackjack. Lost $200. I was able to sit at a blackjack table and watch an extremely drunk man loose $1200, walk away furious. He came back 15 minutes later, bought in for $100 and proceeded to play royal match with his blackjact hands and an hour later, walked away from the table with $5000. I couldn't believe it. He was playing $30 for the dealers every hand and when he was done the dealer had over $600 in tips. Just can't believe watching someone win that kind of money playing so reckless. Oh Well. time for bed.
Wake up for blackjack tournament at Sands Saturday morning. I have never played in a black jack tourament. I was kind of fun. I didn't realize part of the entrance fee included rooms for 2 night. Good to know, and I will have to pay attention to that for next time. 96 tournament entrants, and we played 2 sessions with 20 hands each. they top earners progress to a shoot out table. I did not progress. I also received a $10 voucher to eat at any sands restaurant. I had a Mels Burger and curly fries at Mels Diner. It was very good. At that point, I just wanted to hangout and drink beer and watch some masters. I went to Pipeline Lounge in sports book at Sands. Met some locals and talked with them for several hours, then went to 3rd street lounge with the locals. More beer. Finally, dinner time. I ate next door at Copa. T bone steak and veggies. Pretty good, excellent service. This was my first visit to Sands property, and I really liked it. Low ceilings would be my only complaint, but the staff was good. The property shows some age, but is very clean. I had a good vibe while there.
Sunday morning, time to pack for checkout. Put bags into bell desk, and walked to Silver Legacy buffet to finish off my comps. Good food, and I was lucky there was no line and was seated quickly.
I was gambled out, and the rest of my trip was spent watching masters golf before heading to the airport.
this trip was what I wanted, some distraction and time alone. I am not very discriminating with where I stay. I usually choose downtown properties so that I can walk around and have options close by. In the past I had avoided the Sands because it is off of Virginia street and looked older and neglected from the outside. However, that thinking was ignorant on my part. I did enjoy the food, staff and vibe there. It will find its way into lodging options going forward.
Harrahs property needs a little of what Sands has going for it. Some effort and polish on the the existing property, more favorable games, and friendly staff.
The eldorado-silver legacy-circus circus property is really coming together nicely with the changes made and in process.
Atlantis is very nice, and I may have to may a trip to just stay on a complete property like Atlantis, Peppermill or Grand Sierra.
Good trip, and I was ready to come home. I probably won't make another trip until fall or winter.

Thanks for taking the time to share a very interesting and entertaining trip report. It sounds like you had a good time, and took advantage of most of what downtown has to offer. The only thing you missed was ..... Shooters! I'll have to give the Atlantis deli a try, never ate there before.

Great report OC! Funny how luck comes and goes. Thanks for the food reviews and some really positive comments on the Reno scene. Really good to hear something upbeat about the Sands. I too have noticed that Harrah's has become the cheap joint to stay downtown. It was once considered quite posh. Glad to hear they put on a good show anyway. We've seen several good shows there too.

Yes, sometimes we just need a little diversion from all the demands of life to get back in sync. Reno is a great spot for that.

I also like the Sands, but they do attract a little rougher crowd and my wife does not care for the place. On solo trips I always make a stop there.

Thanks for the report.
