Today's news reports that Station Casinos is resuming plans to build an 84,000 square foot casino across Virginia Street from the Reno Sparks Convention Center, to offer gaming, sports book and food and drink choices. The development was first announced in 2004 but put on hold when the economy tanked. They have an unrestricted gaming license purchased from the old Turf Club when it closed for the train trench, which allows them to build a stand alone casino without the hotel rooms required by newer licenses. Don't hold your breath waiting, Stations has a good reputation for locals casinos in Las Vegas, but even going full speed ahead the grand opening is still a couple years away.

All I can recall is Les Schwab.

What's there now? If they're smart there will there be a "Liberty Bell Saloon" inside.

Is this related to the Jethro (Max Bauer) project from years ago?

Remano, thanks to your post I do remember Station Casinos had a plan for a Reno casino, but I had long forgotten about it. So no hotel attached? Before Harolds was torn down and some developers were considering investing in it, the city was insisting a hotel had to be build too.

JD - there's nothing but a vacant lot there now. It's across Virginia St. from the Convention Center and slightly South (where Kietzke Lane intersects). The Liberty Belle was on a small lot in front of the Convention Center and on the same side of the street. Would be great if Station could get together with the Fey family and bring back the old slot machine displays, though. Max Baer's plans were for the area where Park Lane Mall used to be, farther North toward downtown.

Dave - no hotel at present but I suppose they could always add that later if business warrants. You're right, the moneyed interests got a law passed that requires new casino developments to include hotel rooms as a way to limit competition. That's been bad for Reno which traditionally had lots of free standing casinos without hotels. Station can get around the requirement because they are operating under the old Turf Club's license, which goes back before the hotel requirement was in effect and so is "grandfathered in."

Wasn't Baer's trying to build one in CC also in an old Walmart building
and wanted to put up a Hugh sign that would of lit up the whole Town?

Given that Station Casino are building in the hope that the US economy is on the upswing - I hope Peter Schiff is wrong. He sees a monetary crisis as impending. (He's a big advocate of owning gold or silver or their mining stocks).

I don't know if Max Baer has ever given up on his Beverly Hillbillies casino but he was one of the developers interested in Harolds Club at one time. He's also considered Carson City as a site, but he ran into opposition because he wanted to build a giant oil derrick outside his casino.

Just did some cursory internet investigation. Max Baer is now about 79 years old. From what I gather his plans have received a go ahead somewhere near Carson City. I'm not sure whether any construction has started. Remano, can you help on this one?

Well, that would be a big improvement over the weed infested asphalt that is there now. I remember when stations was ready to build, but that did not work out. They owned the property at the 395/Mt. Rose Hwy spot. I think they still own that land. I remember when that was way out in country, but it has really grown.

How long has it been since the Reno area had a NEW casino built? It has probably been 20 years or so? Perhaps the Silver legacy? Sienna?

I haven't heard anything about Max Baer's plans in a few years. I think his project is probably on permanent hold. One of the problems (though not the only one, I'm sure) was that the oil derrick was supposed to shoot flames out the top every hour or so, kind of like TI's volcano in Vegas. The neighbors weren't too happy about that idea. Once in a while someone will assume that Bodine's Casino in Carson City must have something to do with him because Bodine was Jethro's last name on the Beverly Hillbillies, but there is no connection.

Station does still own the property off Mt. Rose Highway, near the Summit Mall and once planned to build a casino there until the economy tanked. I haven't heard any recent plans for that property either.

CaSwede, Tamarack junction (way down south on Virginia St.) was built and opened in 2001. The Siena was an extensive remodeling of the old Holiday casino. It also opened for business in 2001 - and again in 2011. And, as we all know it has recently closed it's casino.

The Silver legacy, built in 1995, would qualify as the last new casino built in downtown Reno.

Tamarack junction in 2001. Wow that was 15 years ago and look at how many Indian casinos that have opened in those 15 years. It seems obvious that the casino industry in Reno hit rock bottom a few years ago and is ready for expansion.

I don't think Max Baer will ever see his dream built. It is too bad. As I remember he originally wanted to build his casino in Minden. I believe he had an option on the property where they recently put the big -Minden- sign. He seemed to run into roadblocks in Minden, Carson City and Reno.
