Directly across the street from Harrah's Plaza (formerly The Nevada Club & American Bandstand) is currently a Pawnshop (formerly The Horseshoe Casino with Steakhouse upstairs overlooking Virginia Street). Today, next door to the South is the Knitting Factory Concert Venue (formerly the Silver Spur Casino, later a Sports Bar).

The Knitting Factory (next to the T-Shirt Shop on the corner of 2nd & Virginia) quit booking concerts several months ago and is just some frontage with a few black doors.

As I checked the TV station news for the former Prima Donna (Now Siri's), I see someone has plans for what the kids only know as the Knitting Factory at 211 N. Virginia St.

From KOLO:

"RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - National entertainment and hospitality group Knitting Factory Entertainment is leaving the Reno market and has closed Knitting Factory Reno."

"The operators of the RockBar Theatre, who ran a concert venue in San Jose, California, will transition into the Knitting Factory space. RockBar expects to renovate and re-brand the venue as a concert house, CASINO and restaurant. "

Reno always seemed like a strange location for the Knit. Perhaps it strayed too far from its roots in NYC.

Anyway, I'll be happy to see another 24 hour joint on Virginia St. I hope they can make it work.

If you read that story, you'll see the NEW CASINO will be owned by the same parent company that owns the chain of "Knitting Factory" venues in several other cities.

Oh...and in finding those old photos, I forgot about the, "3 for $ 10" T-Shirt Shop used to be part of "The Money Tree" casino that ran down 2nd Street towards "Eddies Fabulous Fifties". AND that todays liquor store between Siri's and the Little Nugget was called, "The Ground COW". I do NOT remember that one.

The Ground Cow sounds about right for the Little Nugget these days, with its awfully awfully large (but over-rated) burger!

BTW, before the Nugget Diner started serving it, wasn't the Awful Awful Burger served at Kilroy's, upstairs at the Nevada Club? I first started going to Reno in 1995, when the Nugget was still open, with old one arm bandits-a-plenty upstairs outside of Kilroy's. I seem to remember the AAB was advertised at Kilroy's long before it was resurrected at the Nugget Diner. It's been sad to see so many casinos close. I never thought I'd see them start to open up again, but then again, I never thought I'd see Reno rebound with such strength.

I think the Awful Awful has always been associated with the Nuggets (The little Nugget on Virginia Street, the big one in Sparks and the cool old casino in Carson city. Here's an ad for the Kilroy's Killer Burger from a "Showtime" magazine from October 1994 ... (Note; I think, back then, the Awful Awful was still down around 3 bucks).

That's pretty wild news, JD. Is Virginia Street going to be a "Glitter Gulch" again?
