Thanks again guys and gal too!
Hope Reno does not go like Vegas........cutting down on comps, food deals, etc. In Vegas, if you spend 5 nights at any casino and drop 3k-5k, you're nobody. Small potato. Two years ago at Bills Gambling Hall ( used to be Barbary Coast, now part of Linq), a friend and I played craps from midnight to 6AM, usually $ 50-125 each roll. After the table cleared, I asked the dealer for a breakfast voucher and was told I wasn't betting enough. Never went back again. That is the Vegas I am remembering. Ruthless!
Again....hope Reno doesn't get this way.

I think Reno isnt as tight as Vegas. May of the properties now you can swipe your card and see what comps you have earned. So use that card!! I dont know though with table games how often it gets updated.

Hello Salemgambler. I realize you are already home from your Reno trip but for future reference the Silver Legacy is generous with their comps and room offers. I only go once a year and I get offers every month for two free nights. I always stay three nights but they even give a reduced price on the third night (I think it's the casino comp rate). They also do not charge the resort fees on a comp offer (which are now up to a ridiculous $16.62 per day). I have family members who also stay at Silver Legacy and they go even less frequently than once a year and they too get the monthly two free night offers. The comp points add up really fast too. I still have $80.00 leftover from last year which I intend to use next month toward meals. Apparently now you can also convert your slot comp dollars into free play which they would not allow me to do last year so I will look into that next month when I am there.

I believe in the fine print of their Star Rewards information it states you must have gambling activity within 14 months or "at their discretion" they can drop your card level down due to lack of play, but I have gone over 14 months between visits before and am still at the same card level (Premier level, I am not a high roller).

Seahawk,
Stayed at Silver in 2013 for 4 nights and gambled a lot. Wife is a slot player and I play the ponies and sports bet. Aside from the comp buffets and food credits, Silver did not send me a SINGLE offer in the mail. NADA. It was after that trip I asked several of my Oregon friends that venture to Reno frequently and the consensus opinion was.....stay away from the Silver because of it's terrible comp offers.
That's why in Sept., we stayed at Eldorado because the consensus opinion was the El D does have a better comp program. I have since received offers from Sands, Circus but still waiting for El D offers. You are the lucky one.

Salem - Sorry to hear you did not get any offers from SL. I would be curious to know what your offers will be from Eldorado though. And I am also wondering now that Eldorado is buying up the other half of SL and all of CC if changes will be in the works for the comp programs of all three hotels and if they will become uniform and under one comp system.

Seahawk,
I will keep you posted on offer received. If you don't know, going to Reno in Sept was kinda out of the ordinary for me. I am a 3-4 trip a year Vegas degenerate and decided to try Reno again. Matter of fact, I will be going back to Vegas in March for MM, as I have done for the past 25 plus years. We ( a group of guys from the mid-western states ) meet annually in March and do nothing but booze up and gamble for 6 nights. My offers from Vegas are plentiful ( free comp rooms, etc) but it's the other cost that has pissed me off in the past few years. For one, airfares are just a rip-off. With the cost of fuel at it's lowest level in years, airfares have gone up, instead of down. Also....we have found that the slots are much tighter ( Reno is/has gotten there too) and the drinks, although comped, have gotten less and less due to the service or lack thereof of the CW.
Basically, all I want is value for my dollar and although Reno is no Vegas, I am willing to try something different to reap the benefits I think I deserve. Living in the Pacific NW, there are dozens of Indian casinos everywhere but they offer nothing to me. Matter of fact, I live about 3 mins from one and I have only step foot in it about 10 times in 15 plus years.....and that was only to eat at the buffet.

I hear ya Salem! The airfares are crazy sometimes! In fact, I was supposed to be in Reno last weekend (over Columbus Day weekend) and wanted to check out the Italian Festival for the first time, but the airfares from Seattle were outrageous, over $425 per person. I refuse to pay that much for such a short flight distance. Postponed our trip for one week until this coming weekend instead. Paid about $250 per person which is much better but still not ideal. The airfare prices are definitely not what they once were, especially to Reno. There are very rarely "sales" to Reno anymore and I get weekly emails from both Alaska and Southwest Airlines.

I agree with you about Vegas slots. But I think they are much tighter in Vegas than Reno. I've been to Vegas numerous times but not in the last 5 years and have no plans to go back. Way too crowded, slots are way too tight, drink service too slow, etc. But I was not getting comped anywhere in Vegas so that obviously makes for a better experience when you have great comps. I don't think Vegas really cares about focusing on gambling "value" just from the sheer number of people that go there. Yeah, I'm sure the high rollers are treated great, but the rest of us? And there are so many other things to do in Vegas besides gambling that it will always draw huge crowds regardless. You're right, Reno is no Vegas but I personally prefer it that way. I like the much less crowded vibe of Reno and the gambling value is so much better. Glad you went to Reno and tried something different to reap your benefits. Hopefully you enjoyed Reno enough and will give it another try again in the near future. You may have to convince all the guys from the Midwestern states to go to Reno instead! After 25 years in Vegas...

I also agree about the PNW tribal casinos. I have three of them within an hour or so drive of my home, two of which I never go to. The other I used to frequent regularly but rarely go now.

Enjoy your trip to Vegas for MM in March! Hoist one for me, my birthday is in March!

Less than 48 hours until I'm in Reno! Yay!

Seahawk,
How often do you frequent Reno?
It would be nearly impossible to convince "the guys" to go to Reno over Vegas.
Can't really blame them. After all, if faced with the option of Reno vs. Vegas over 6 nights, which would you choose?
Good luck on your forthcoming trip. Hope all you bets turn into mega cash...LOL
Do let me know how it turned out.

Salem,

I go to Reno usually once a year, sometimes twice a year.

I've been to Vegas many times but don't have any desire to go back so I will always choose Reno over Vegas.

Thanks for the good luck, I'll surely need it. I will post a trip report when I get back home.

Hey, new to the forum and had kind of a similar question.

I have 3 free nights at Harrah's in February (not including resort fees). The thing is, I will be doing all of my gambling at either Silver Legacy or Eldorado, and am not thrilled about having to walk down the street to a lesser room. Any idea if they comp rooms in retrospect at SL/ElDo, and how much gaming it would take?

Also, unrelated, which property has the best comped drinks?

This time of year it doesn't take much to get comped rooms anywhere,
the last couple trips we've played some at SL and have gotten 2nts comped.
The best drink service I've found is hands down Cal, neva. And they have
just about every drink known to man or woman.

Cal Neva, excuse my honest opinion, is but a freaking dive. You may be the only person in the entire place depending on the time of night and day of week. If you're into drinks, by all means go. But the Nevada experience also should include fun, action and a semblance of what a casino is about. Don't you think?

Hello IOWActuary, and welcome to the board. I am a newbie here myself. I am loyal to the Silver Legacy and always stay there when I go to Reno. I'm not sure exactly how much gaming it takes to get comped rooms there though but I think you have to earn between 100 and 399 points a day to get comped or discounted room offers. Go to the Star Rewards section on SL's website and it has a benefits table of what you get for your average daily points. I am not a high roller and still receive two free night offers frequently and I only go to Reno usually once or twice a year. Since you mentioned you are going to do all of your gambling at SL (or Eldo) I encourage you to always use your players card. At the very least, you should get some comped meals at SL as the points add up fast. I didn't pay cash for one meal on my trip there last month as all meals were comped with points from my players card. I don't usually gamble at Eldo so am not familiar with their comps/point system.

I don't blame you for not being thrilled about Harrahs. I was in there for a brief period of time on my trip last month and that casino is looking pretty sad. Totally dead on a Saturday night, but SL and Eldo casinos were hoppin' with plenty of people!

I don't have problems getting good drink service at SL so hopefully that will hold true for you as well.

Have a great trip (and a winning trip!) and make sure to post a trip report when you get back!

And THAT'S why they make more than one flavor of ice cream, Salem Gambler !

I don't think there's all that much difference in most drinks. At some times even a top rated casino has bad drink service out on the floor. Legacy is a perfect example. At times, you can set your shift change watch to the end of timely drink service.

Which is why I usually try to sit at the bar. And THAT brings me to "the best place to get the best drink service."

And IN MY OPINION, the Cal Neva IS a DIVE. But a decent tip at the bar THERE will guarantee great drink service for as long as you're there. Same at the tables. Being a high roller is not too tough there and I like that in a casino. Your mileage may vary.

As for the looong walk from Harrahs to Silver Legacy.....well, the fresh air might do you some good. OR you can always go "diving" across the street.

Tip Vlad a $ 2 Bill at the Sky bridge bar (say hi to Pickle the local) and ask Vlad for a LARGE red wine to take into the Top Deck for a $ 5.99 Prime Rib Dinner at the counter.

But then I appreciate dives....and they appreciate me....at a much lower price. And you meet THE MOST INTERESTING PEOPLE THERE. (Right, Lily?) And I HAVE been there at 4 am.... I promise YOU will be the MOST TOGETHER person there. Catch Karaoke night...it's great (sometimes) but always VERY entertaining.

All you need to do is hit one big jackpot at Cal Neva and you'll be cured...maybe, maybe not.

Right now, I believe I'm a hero with Robert & Larry at the Silver Baron bar. But you'll have to read my trip reports to figure out why.
