Mike Van Houten at downtownmakeover is reporting that the Siena has been purchased by Fernando Leal and will close its casino on June 30. The hotel will continue as an upscale non-gaming property managed by Mariott Renaissance or another similar nationwide management company. Here's the article:

Thanks for the link to the interesting historical article, Remano. I'm sure it's no surprise to anyone that has visited the Siena over the last few years, that the Casino could not be turning a profit. When I visited in 2012, it was eerily quiet. I have some memories of the Holiday's Casino and I actually preferred it.

If the article is correct, they'll have no problem running the Siena as a hotel only operation. But I'll wish them "Good Luck" anyway.

Got some offers for free rooms several mo. ago so took them up on
it in Jan. spent some time in the casino, but no luck at all. That was
the last I heard from them. It was very nice and clean, but nothing
stands out. For lack of a better term, I would say it's just cookie
cutter casino.

These people that run the casino's have the imagination of a fence post!
When we go to a casino we expect to be entertained and have a good
time! Not set in front of a dumb 120 volt vacuum cleaner, that's only
purpose is to empty our pockets. I used to go to the CVI in Minden.
I loved the place, it was always fun. Then the owner Retired and sold
out to one of the Eldo. people. Never been even close to the old place!
They did clean it up but it lost every thing else!

A few things that stood out about the Siena that I observed during my time living in Reno:

1. The knock-you-down odors from Sushi Saga that wafted through the air coming and going in and out of the side entrance. Being allergic to all things seafood, this really stood out.

2. The generic vs. real Red Bull that was used in their cocktails.

3. The four solitary machines of the Blazing Sevens family along the white painted concrete wall: Two standard models, a Double model, and a Diamond Line model, all fixed vs. progressive - the ultimate sin - it just wasn't meant to be!

When I got my win/loss statement for 2013 from there, it said I came out $395 ahead. I guess having only one visit to a casino property in a calendar year can have its advantages! I'll also give them kudos for the tier level matching their players club has/had. I recall getting automatically bumped up to the second tier by showing them my Harrah's Diamond card.

So, it wasn't really my cup of tea, but I wish them well, whatever they plan on doing with it.

This doesn't surprise me...I knew when Barney Ng lost it, that it was never going to make it as a casino again...
I agree though, the hotel is beautiful! (The rooms are NICE!) but the clientele that would always "straggle" in off the street, was never any good...
Too bad though...

Agreed, too bad. But I just don't think there's money to be made from that casino.

Dang.

Ng spent $ 70 MILLION rehabing the old Holiday. And he was absent and was constantly being robbed blind. His staff stole the marble for the pool (and sold it back to him a few times later), they stole from his wine collection (and showed up at a bar just to the East) and gave away the house. And IGT supposedly ripped him off big time on his initial tracking system. His wife didn't make it easy with her ideas of "It would be nice to...." ideas either.

Ng ended up selling his $ 70 MILLION joint for something like $ 3 1/2 million and even THEY couldn't keep it going at that huge discount. There's a lesson about egos there somewhere.

I never quite understood the "Star Trek/Etruscan" motif the most recent owners went for. I always expected Scotty would "Beam me up..." whenever I was under those upside down funnels.

But I most liked it for the $ 4k royal I hit the second day they were opened.

Did not much care for the unrequested bottle of "JD" they left in my room and then took $ 95 out of my comps.

I would be really pissed off I played there hard recently trying to get back on their high roller list. Deja Vu.

I don't see this as a big loss. There was no way they were going to turn a profit with this casino. I guess now the big question is can they draw people to fill the rooms?

I only played in the casino twice. When they first opened they had some great promotions to get a players card and they had many full pay video poker games. I played enough to use up the promotions (including free lunch), and left with some of their money.

I wandered around about a year ago and didn't see anything of value to me and left without playing.

when they opened, they were an elegant, special casino. good drinks, dark lighting, moody, great place. special staff. they were DIFFERENT.
Liked that they (erroneously) made me a special VIP.

they went steadily downhill. I tried to advise them (without charge) but they ignored my ideas.

last many years, they have Sucked!!!!

I must say, I'm a little sad today. Some of my favorite times with old friends were at the Siena. Yes, small casino. Yes, somewhat weird design. BUT we were always treated very well as low-rollers. We felt special, had plenty of drinks, won some money, ate comped food, laughed our asses off. They knew our names and we knew theirs. Last of that personal attention for the little guy. My Facebook page photo has been a pix taken by a pit boss at the Siena with 5 great friends at a table. What a fun night.

I miss the Holiday too. (The Siena's predecessor.)
