Hi,

Does anyone know if there are any Sega Derby games left in Reno? I found a couple in Vegas, but they are disappearing quickly.

Thanks

Wade

I think he is referring to the horse racing type game where 12 people sit around a small machanical horse race track and bet on the race. The last one I saw in the Reno/Tahoe area was at Harvey's in Tahoe. I use to play it every time I went, but they took it out several years ago. I don't believe there are any left in the area.

There used to be one in the Reno Hilton a few years back, but I haven't been in the Hilton since a few years back.

Ah, yes, the reason I began gambling was the Sigma Derby. I used to play 12-16 hours a day when they were nickle machines.
One night (like 4am) only my two brothers and I were playing. I think we were playing all eight of the machines between the 3 of us.
The 200 to 1 came in. We were all on it and had a total of 35 bets down. So we took out $350 in one 30 second race - playing nickles. Course we put it all back in.
Ahhh, those were the days.

Alas, though, there are none left in Washoe County and the area to my knowledge. The ones that are left elsewhere are all at 25 cents a bet. That is what killed off the Sigma Derby craze. When they were 5 cents, it was difficult to get a seat. I used to watch them empty the machines at Circus and they were LOADED with nickles. A big money maker.

In fact, I used to have 10-12 people come to Reno at once from all over the country for a get-together once a year. Primarily the focus was Sigma Derby. They were bringing lots of business to Reno. The ladies shopped, ate out, etc. We spent a lot of money to get together for the Sigma Derby.

No, John, the Hilton took theirs out a good while ago.
There was still one in Tahoe two years ago. There is one at the Luxor in Vegas and one in Laughlin at the Flamingo. Every town I used to visit in the state, I went into every casino searching for a nickle derby.
But at 25 cents it is a totally different game which I can ill afford. I rarely ever play it.

Sorry about the sad news, Tatterdema. But you did bring up some good memories.
At one time, one of the big game shows in Vegas was demonstrating a bigger fancier version of a similar machine. But it never seemed to hit the market.

Rats,

Thanks for your help anyway. I was hoping one of the out of the way casinos like boomtown, or one in Carson city might still have it. Guess I will have to hit Vegas for my fix.

there is or was 3 years ago at the indian casino in orovile. the casino that is 18+ cant remember the name.. anyway they have .5cent roulette on a big sega machine. it shoots the ball out on a giant wheel and you use a touch screen to bet nickles.
