21 days is the number of days until St. Patricks day. The old Fitzgeralds used to have a sign that gave the exact number of days until St. Patricks day. They can no longer give out that information, so I thought I would give everyone the needed information.

It is just another thing I miss from the Ol' Fitz.

St. Patrick's day is the day that everyone is Irish.....even the Swede.

Here's a dumb question: what was the Fitz like on St. Patrick's day?

Methinks it would have been a good day to party there.

It's still a little hard to believe that it's gone....<sniff>!

I was there this weekend and The Fizt is closed again for
a remodel, the good news is the Blarney Stone is still on the
front of the building and I saw a women rub it. Don't know
if she had any good luck, I didn't!

I might be reading between the lines, but I am thinking J.D. has a trip planned to Reno/Virginia City. What is the connection between eating Rocky Mountain Oysters and St. Patrick? I did a little research on the Saint and there was no mention of him eating those.

I did discover one interesting fact. March 17th we celebrate St. Patrick's day is actually the day he died --- not birthday.

I know we are getting close as I saw them setting up displays for sales on Irish Beer at the grocery store.... count me in.

J.D. If you go, be sure to wear a green shirt. You don't want to get pinched by some good looking women....do you?

Well, as best I can figure, Virginia City is incapable of a plain, ordinary holiday. So they have to spin most of them into some kind of Two Fer.
And any old excuse for a parade. The parading is required for all events. Likely some pretty good bands that weekend too. The Corner Bar at Piper's Opera House will have the Jesse James band (really) Grateful Dead/Beatles/70's & 80's Deja Vu.

And being superstitious, I have had extraordinary luck at the Mark Twain Casino that weekend. The bad part is I quit flying and the drive in mid March can be...well....exiting at times, unpredictable always.

The weather can range from 20 degrees with blowing snow, to 70 and balmy palm tree weather. Sometimes the same day. Sometimes the same hour.

So I usually decide at the last minute. Am assembling casino offers for my parlay right now.

Oh...I need to check the Red Dog Saloon schedule too.

More later.

JD - I don't know what's on the schedule for the Red Dog, but to me it would seem to be a natural as the hub of St. Pat's activity in VC. After all, when I think of a "red dog," the first breed that comes to my mind is an IRISH Setter.

To follow up on spdmrcht's comment about the current state of the Fitz, and in so doing take the thread entirely off topic, it is indeed again under reconstruction but this time seems to be for real. I don't know what the rooms will be like but I have seen truckloads of old furniture hauled away, new stuff delivered and there seems to be lots of activity every day and the exterior has finally been repainted to get rid of the old Fitzgerald's "F" logo at the top. Real walls are being built to sub-divide the first floor and get rid of that ugly "abandoned warehouse" motif favored by the CommRow folks. They just announced the hiring of their general manager, an experienced hotel professional from CA, and they claim to be ready for a May 1 opening. To be on the safe side, though, they are not currently accepting reservations for dates before July 1. One disturbing factor is the room rates, which are said to be in the $125 to $190 per night range which seems to me a bit high for that location.

Next door some construction workers having lunch in the alley behind Siri's Casino (former Golden Phoenix/Primmadonna) told me they are on schedule for an April 1 opening. Much of that might depend on last minute details like delivery and set-up of machines, final approval by gaming control board etc., which is beyond the construction workers' control, so maybe just "early April" would be more accurate.

Whatever the exact dates, it looks like this Spring will be interesting in the Biggest Little City. And, to get back on topic, St. Patrick's Day is often regarded as the kickoff of the Spring season.

Wow, dramatic stuff. Does this mean that "CommRow" is finally and officially dead, or did I miss that development somewhere along the line?

Now I feel kind of bad for making so much fun of them...but not too bad; those restaurant names were so dang pretentious.

The way I understand it is, the new cal neva casino across the alley
will have a cross way over the alley to the old Fitz hotel rooms that
are being remodeled. but those prices for the rooms doesn't interest
me one bit. A really good Deli would be great.

With just a tiny bit of pre planning, the sign that says,

SIRI CASINO could be easily named changed to SIN CASINO.

It'd probably get more people in the door.
