The board has taken a breather for four days so I thought I might get something going. I'll admit this is somewhat lame, but here goes. Apparently, back in 1997, two guys did something I kinda always wanted to do. They got inside the long closed Mapes. It would have been cool if they took a few more pics but I guess this is the only one they've gone public with. Waiting for Crepes at the Mapes Or is it just creeps at the Mapes?

Also any comments on my XP post in the Comments section would be appreciated.

OK, so it's January 1985 and this Reno regular walks into his favorite downtown casino - the Cal Neva. He get's a beer for a quarter and walks into the depths of the smokey casino. He exchanges $40 for the dollar tokens from the man standing behind his favorite row of dollar machines. He spies a new machine at the end of the row - it's got 5 reels, he sits down and drops 3 tokens into the slot. Without bothering to read the pay-table he pulls the handle. Three symbols line up near the bottom on the left side reels. The bell starts ringing! Coins start falling, but to his surprise he sees that just a dollar token, a quarter and three pennies have fallen into the tray. "What the Hell is this?" he says to the slot attendant. "Oh that's a new test machine,"replies the attendant, "that's the way they're all gonna be in thirty years!"

This is awesome! I wonder if the public photos of these people were kept to a minimum so as not to get anybody in trouble? (I'm thinking that breaking into an abandoned building, or however they got in, might put these folks in the trespassing category?) I remember peeking inside a gap through the front doors of Fitzgeralds after they closed and seeing a lone slot machine in the middle of the empty floor that was still powered up, and I thought that was something!

And oh, that "new, futuristic slot machine" - I guess it was a sneak preview of the penny multiliners that have bombarded the casinos these days. Makes one wonder how things will be 20 years from now...10 reels? 5 trillion lines? Whatever happens, I hope the Cal Neva never gets rid of the Rams!

I actually stumbled upon that photo quite some time back but I don't think I ever linked to it before.

And you're right I was referencing today's "penny" many-liners in my little farcical story. But I often do think, after I have spun the reels on one of them and gotten back half my total bet - and the music starts playing, that this never would have happened in the good old days. You'll notice too, that the percentage payback on the penny machines is never touted like the old 97.4% for the old dollar machines once was.

You're right on that one. I think it's closer to 47.9%.

Right on, message me for sure if you'd like to go have a beer or twelve...God bless that Treasures of the Eldorado kiosk!

And speaking of the rams, haven't been to check in a little while, but here's one of the funniest of lines I encountered from a random stranger since I've been here yet!

Random stranger, talking to his friend: "That guy's phenomenal. That's that dude that's always playin' them cats!" (Keeping in mind now, that a couple of days earlier, another random stranger called them devils.)

Me: "RAMS! RAMS! RAMS! SEVENS! SEVENS! SEVENS!"

Jeez, I didn't know I was so popular around here! Hopefully they'll be firing for you all!
