This site is almost as dead as tourism in Reno.

While we can't argue that Reno hasn't seen business fall off over the past two decades, the old town still knows how to throw a party!

As for our board - well, sometimes we all take a few days off but other times the Trip Reports and Reno Comments are flyin' in left and right.

The only new tidbits of info I can provide (for both Old Reno and New Reno!):

I unfortunately noticed over this last week, that California Pizza on 4th Street, and the tattoo parlor right next to it directly on the corner of 4th and Virginia, both appear to be shut down and vacated. Not sure what happened, because they were up and running not even a month ago. I sure am going to miss the $5.99 three slice and drink special!

Thanks for the video links. Mjames, it's funny you mentioned the Mapes - I found a site over the weekend that's about Reno casinos past, which gives a shot-by-shot sequence of the Mapes implosion:

http://www.oldreno.net/mapes.htm

I guess this is where the ice rink plaza is now? I had no idea.

Also, I had no idea about the Mizpah Hotel fire tragedy back in 2006:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBtWo9r5h_I

So THAT'S what was there before the big empty vacant lot on the corner of Lake and Second. Learn something new everyday!

Now here's a good one. When switching hotels today, I was stopped by an individual who looked very lost. He stopped and asked me if I knew where the Sundowner was, because he wanted to gamble there. I asked him a few times if he was sure it was the Sundowner, as it's been closed for quite some time and is now a condo complex called The Belvedere. He had no idea it had even closed, so I'm sure hoping he found his way (particularly if he had reservations, and particularly if he was looking to gamble in their casino!)

And let us not forget the very informative site itself that's attached to this message board:

www.visitreno.com

(Gotta admit that I often forget to check the mainstream site!)

I think it's been discussed here before, but what ideas do people have for new businesses to fill up some of these empty buildings downtown? More casinos? More restaurants? More motor lodges? Or are they just going to remain vacant and possibly be imploded? I guess time will tell. In the meantime, though, gotta love this place!

Kind of weird with the Mitzpah hotel... I had been looking at RGJ on-line as I was planning a trip to Reno and just happen to look in when the fire first was reported as "breaking news". It was riveting to read the updates and see the news reports.

I saw this at the bottom of the Sundowner site--
"~ Site designed and maintained by John Muller, Reno, NV ~"

Maybe someone should try to get ahold of this guy and tell him the site is out of date and needs some of his maintenance.

Also, don't forget to enter the free room contest. I hope I win!

"Bus Promos" at the Sundowner - that's the ticket!

I really wonder about the fellow asking passersby in downtown Reno in May, 2013 to ask directions to the Sundowner - could that be a version of myself from the future, coming in from a time warp of some kind??

Perhaps he was looking at that same page on the visitreno.com site - well, I vote the page be retained, just for historical purposes.

As for the "What to do with the downtown?" discussion, it's pretty clear that new casino hotels probably won't provide the answer - perhaps more office space, to bring in new blood? Services tend to pop up and cluster around such things, but of course, getting businesses to relocate to a downtown environment means parking and/or even more mass transit.

In the spirit of California's insatiable quest for high-speed rail that goes from nowhere to nowhere, then, why not a similar project for Reno, but one that actually has meaningful destinations, like the airport to the Downtown? After all, if California can summon sufficient federal, state, and local pork for such a thing, why shouldn't Reno get the same?

Doesn't the Federal Reserve pump $85 billion into the US economy every month? How about a few billion for Reno? Re-open and rebuild all the closed casinos. Hire a few thousand people to run them. Any money left over could go the airlines to subsidize fares. Nothing could go wrong - right?

Sadly, Stan that's the Sundowner site's only function, besides being a portfolio entry. Equally sadly, all five of the hotel/casino sites I built are now gone:
Sundowner ~ closed
Duke's Casino ~ closed on the day the site was finished
Frontier Hotel ~ closed and imploded
Clarion Las Vegas ~ sold to Ramada
Lady Luck ~ Changed management companies. My build didn't fit their template

It was suggested by Marlene that I rename my business to "Kiss of Death Site Design".
