I started this TR when I got back, but never finished it. So it's posted "as is":

Travel

We decided to drive.

Left San Diego on Saturday around 7:30 am and arrived in Reno around 4:30 pm. We made a few pit stops and one quick lunch stop at Subway in Independence or Lone Pine, I can’t remember which one. The drive was beautiful, plenty of snow covered mountains and lakes. It was really gorgeous.

On the way back, Friday, we came from S. Lake Tahoe and stopped in Bishop. It took about 4 hours. Then on Saturday, from Bishop to San Diego it took about 5 ½ hours. Normally it’s only around a 5 hour drive, but we got stuck in traffic in Adelante, behind a huge “wideload” truck and then also hit traffic in San Bernadino.

Lodging

Saturday – Wednesday, we stayed at the Peppermill in their Deluxe Spa suite. The rate was $69, $119, comp, comp. At check in I asked for a room away from the construction. They are in the process of building a huge parking garage. The guy at check-in was such a douche. I swear he was about 18 years old and I think it was his 1st day on the job. Anyway, he asked me to sign for the room up front and it listed charges for the comped nights. He said not to worry, the charges would be taken off at the end. I told him I wasn’t going to sign it, so he called the manager over. The manager explained that even though it’s comped, they have to show the charges, but assured me it would not appear on the bill. I went ahead and signed for it, but wasn’t very happy. I then asked the manager if they had anything on a higher floor (we were on the 7th), he told me only in smoking. I decided to keep the non-smoking room. We get up to our room, which was at the end of the hall, I open up the curtains and we’re looking directly out on the construction. Did I mention the check-in guy was an idiot? I went ahead and kept the room, because I didn’t feel like switching around the next day. I wanted to get unpacked and settled in since we were there for 4 nights.

The rooms at the Peppermill are in need of a remodel. Everything is very worn and our bed sagged (slightly) in the middle. I did enjoy the Bath and Body Works soaps, shampoos etc…and now have a whole drawerful of them at home! I’m not sure what I’m going to do with them, but I’m sure they’ll come in handy sometime. The suite had a Jacuzzi and steam shower. I used the Jacuzzi once. It’s ok, but can be pretty dangerous because they lined the outside of it in slippery marble. Who know’s what they were thinking when they designed it?

I went down to the gym one morning and walked on the treadmill for a few minutes. I guess the gym was decent. They had 4 treadmills, a couple of stairmasters and elyptical (sp?) machines, a weight machine and some free weights. TV’s throughout, but they had them all on “The View”. I would have rather watched CNN. Another annoying thing, is that they had a big tree/bush in front of the window that looks out on the pool. It would have been nice to have an unobstructed view while walking on the treadmill.

Wed – Fri we stayed at Harvey’s Tahoe. We were comped both nights. We left Reno around 1 pm and decided to take the scenic route to Harveys, over the Mt. Rose highway and around the Lake. It was really spectacular. We got out a couple of times to take photos and it was sooo cold. The wind was blowing and it felt like it was 40 below. Anyway, we checked into Harvey around 3 pm and it wasn’t busy. I went to Diamond check-in and decided to ask the girl if they had any upgrades available. She was not super friendly, so I thought she was going to tell me no right off the bat, but she looked in her computer, wrote down some numbers on a piece of paper, went into the back for a minute, then came out got on the phone and called someone to see if they would Ok a suite for us. They did and I was pretty stoked, but figure since it was mid-week we had a pretty good chance. We were given room 1945, which is the top floor at the very end of the hall. The suite was actually 2 rooms, with a connecting door. One had the living room with full bathroom and the other was the bedroom w/full bathroom. The living room had a giant 60 inch TV in it. The view’s were awesome, we looked out on the lake and Heavenly. This was one of the best rooms I’ve been in. Very large and super quiet. I would definitely stay here again. We stayed at Harrahs Tahoe a year or two ago, and the views and room were not nearly as good as Harvey’s. I think Harrahs has remodeled some of their rooms, so they might be on par w/Harvey’s, but I still think Harvey’s has the better views.

Fri – Sat we stayed at Best Western Creekside, in Bishop, CA. Wow, is all I can say. We decided to stay here based on Tripadvisor.com reviews. The rate was $119/night. It was an extra $10 to have the Creekside view and it was well worth it. I think this is probably the nicest motel I’ve stayed in. All rooms had either a balcony or porch, nice wood furnishings, coffee pots, and decorated very tastefully. The lobby was very cozy with leather furniture and a giant fireplace. The unfriendly check-in lady told us they offer soup from 4-5 pm and fresh baked cookies from 4:30 – 5 pm. We stopped in after dinner and grabbed a couple of cookies and they were very good. We didn’t try the soup, but was told it was chicken noodle. They also serve breakfast from 6-10 am, which included fruit (fresh and canned), cottage cheese, hardboiled eggs, bagels, mini cinnamon buns, French toast (which you have to toast in the toaster), English muffins, biscuits and gravy, assortment of ceareals, coffees, teas, and juices. They did not have a grill, so everything had to be toasted. It was a nice spread, not as nice as Embassy suites, but pretty decent.

Sorry, I never got to the gambling part.

I played a ton of slots at the Peppermill and was surprised about their lack of comps. They ended up taking off the two cheapest room nights plus an extra $100. We ended up paying around $200, for room and food.

I think they've really cut back on the comps and will probably stick with Harrahs next time we're in town.

My favorite new slot, Coyote Moon 1-cent, but at 40 lines it can suck your money fast unless you have some good hits.

Thanks for the trip report!

Sorry to hear you had a crappy bed at the Pep. I have luckily never had this problem. I do know that they are about to begin the remodeling of the Tower rooms. be sure to go back when all tht is done.

Maybe the comps weren't as good, since they are doing all the remodeling?? The got to pay fo rit some way i guess. Crying or Very sad

It's a 40 line machine that has different desert animals (like deer, lizards and old cow skulls...lol). There are wild symbols and of course you can hit a whole row of them (vertically). If you hit a couple lines of wilds, you can get some major wins, this is what happened to me. The one I played was in the hallway which leads from the hotel (front desk) to the casino. If you're walking from the hotel, it's on the right side, almost to where you enter the casino.

Another machine I liked are the penny Lucky Triple 7's and other ones like it. They're real-type machines, max bet is 90, and they have a progressive jackpot. I usually like video slots, but these were fun because they didn't suck your money as quickly as the video slots do.
