I made a quick trip to Carson City this week. Downtown Carson City is just like playing in a casino of about 15 years ago. My first play was a quarter 8/5 bonus poker game with a royal progressive. I cashed out with a small win and the quarters started flowing and ended just 9 coins short---hopper fill needed.....wow it has been a long time for a hopper fill for me. I found some very good high pay tables for video poker at the Nugget, Cactus Jacks and the Horseshoe club. They were running a dinner special at the Horseshoe: a complete New York steak dinner for $8.88 and then you take your receipt to the slot club for $5 in free play.

I stayed at the City Center Motel which is owned by the Nugget. The advertised price is only $42. When I went to check in the gal tried to upsell me to a remodeled room for an extra $8... no thanks. Cheap is good enough as I spent only 7 hours in the room of which 6.9 hours were with my eyes closed. Another flash from about 15 years ago. I was actually handed a real key with the room number on a key chain. The TV was an old 19" RCA model, but at least it was a color tv.

I really liked the Nugget and downtown Carson City and I am sure I will be back.

Years ago I was on an extended stay in Reno when they ran out of rooms. I guess I was renewing my Circus Circus room each night but on Thursday the little slip offering another night for $18 didn't appear. So I drove off to Carson City and the beautiful City Center Motel. I got a room for about $33 back then and a good funbook for the Nugget. Had a few beers at the Nugget and checked out those joints across the street too. Don't remember having much luck but I enjoyed the Nugget a lot. I get in there every chance I get. I love their coffee shop!

I'm one of those that would prefer giving my gaming money to any casino that has employees that appreciate it. The Carson Nugget (and the terrific coffee shop) is a good example.

I've always prefered a smaller, older or even a little threadbare carpeting if I get a friendly bartender, attentive cocktail waitress and someone in the cage that isn't rude.

And a 30 second front desk check in is far more important to me than a mini bar in the room with a worthless "turn down service"....but that's just me.

By the way, in the Carson Nugget on the South side of the pit, against the wall (last time I looked), is a " Five Play, Multi Strike Poker" machine that neither the P mill nor Atlantis have.

It is fast, expensive and will break you quick.... but when it pays, it REALLY PAYS !!! Don't play it unless you're disciplined to quit if you start losing much.

BTW:

Is the "Ormsby House" done YET ??

The Ormsby House was a cool place. Anybody remember that great stairway?

Unfortunately progress on it's renovation has been unbelievably slow. There's a fellow in Carson city who's been keeping a detailed pictorial diary of it's progress for almost 10 years. It can be found at...

http://aroundcarson.com/ormsby/

Don't hold your breath!

Not sure if it's still going or not, but the developers were running a small bar with a few slots somewhere in the lower level to keep the gaming license alive.

You guys are correct. If you like turn down service with a chocolate on your pillow that says "sweet dreams" downtown Carson City is not your place. I did not try the coffee shop nor the steak house, but I like that little snack place with the stools. I had a bowl of soup, a sandwich, and a bag of chips that came to $4.06 with the tax.

I went to the grocery store after I got home, pulled out my wallet to pay, and found a Carson Nugget cash ticket in there...grrr Crying or Very sad

I sure remember the Ormsby House from way back. Pretty fancy for back then. In fact we got kicked out of there as my mom was letting my daughter pull the handle on a slot machine (she was 2 years old). Ha. Ha. Laughing

There were two work type pick up trucks parked at the construction site. I think it will be like the Winchester Mystery House---- the construction will never cease. It actually looks just about done from the outside. Of course it looked like that 7 years ago.

At least their website says they're still there. Apparently this bar with some slots in located in the lower level of the parking garage. And here is the Website...http://ormsbyhouse.com/previndex.htm Any of our members ever been there? I may have to check it out next trip.

Hey, I've done the same thing with a cashout ticket from the Nugget. I think it was worth about $16. I realized I had this in my wallet after we'd driven back from Carson City. Anyway while still in Reno I mentioned it to John who said a friend of his was going to Carson in the next few days. So I passed it along in hopes he'd remember me if he hit the Jackpot on Megabucks or some such machine. And that's the last we heard from him.

I lie in italics!

Now I'm confused, as usual. You say you lie in italics, but that statement is in italics. Does that mean you don't really lie in italics or is there some cryptic message here? It could mean you lie down in italics, but that doesn't make sense. That's OK because this is the visitreno.com message board. Not much that is said here makes sense. This post, for example.

Aha! You're lying because it's in italics. You have to get up pretty early in the afternoon to put one over on me.

I remember from my high school remedial math class that two negatives means it is positive. Think about that for a moment. I did and came to realize that it has nothing to do with the above statement. It does however make a couple of points: 1. I remembered something from high school. 2. It proves John's statement that "Not much that is said here makes sense."

Well despite some well intentioned posts earlier in this thread this one has deteriorated beyond recognition (or any other type of cognition) and of course I mainly blame myself.

Except the bit about remembering the high school stuff. I understood that. Oh, how I miss my Video Poker 12 class and my high school's buffet.
