The newspaper this weekend had a half-page ad soliciting applications for employment at the soon to be reopened Siena. Their web site also appears to be updated with rooms available beginning in April.

The RGJ had this item in today's paper:

Large turnout for Siena job fair

"Potential employees lined up by the hundreds Tuesday, hoping for a change in fortune courtesy of the soon-to-be reopened Siena Hotel Spa Casino."

Our goal is to position the property in such a way we’re not competing with the other (casino) properties,” Meilstrup told applicants. “We’re just going to be offering a different choice.”

Employees, he said, will need the proper attitude to cater to the high-end customers courted by the Siena.

He later echoed his confidence the Siena can make it in a Reno hospitality industry he believes to be on the rebound.

Noticibly ABSENT from the list of hiring positions was ANYTHING related to gaming:

"350 jobs are available in hospitality, casino operations, food and cocktail service, entertainment, concierge, housekeeping, maintenance and security, marketing, information technology and other areas."

From an article in Wed's RGJ:

"Construction crews are now busy making between $4 million and $5 million in renovations to the resort, which will have three restaurants, four lounges, a wine bar, a full-service spa and a 20,000 square-foot gaming area." http://www.rgj.com/article/20110308/NEWS/110308035

A friend who is looking for part time work as a poker dealer said the line was 3 blocks long when he drove by. He didn't even bother to apply.

I would love love love to be wrong, but I just don't think the Siena they're planning on opening can be successful.

Given alternatives and the states of the Reno and NorCal economies, why would anyone think sufficient numbers will go there?

Put that darn decent Craps Game back in the joint, and I'll be back. I know some people who like the BJ and low mins. Video Poker at one time was decent. High End Gamblers? Why?

With those "High-end" allusions, it sounds like they are attempting to return the Siena to its original "The Siena" state - I'd like to see that succeed, I really would - sure, we all have our doubts, but this is exactly the type of effort whose absence we've been bemoaning, so we should all stand up and cheer 'em on.

I'm cheering for Siena, I've stayed there, I've written here how its craps tables (then craps table) were my favorite in the whole world.

But it didn't work. Siena didn't make enough from the likes of me, of which there were too few, and I don't see it working now that it's being reincarnated.

To me, it seems the new owners are attempting the exact same plan that failed the last management team.

May time prove me wrong.

DownTown Reno is dead. The only reason I can see for someone to open a casino there is if they need to launder some money. What a terrible business plan.

Well, that gives me an idea - how about opening a new casino, and calling it "The Money Laundry" - a variety of stereotypical pimps, oil sheikhs, and drug cartel magnates will act as dealers, pit bosses, and the like.

It could also inspire local complementary businesses, such as auto body chop shops, obscure banks, and of course, more pawnshops.

Sounds like a shot in the arm for the economy!

As one who bemoans the passing of so many of Reno's great casinos, I will try to cheer for the Siena.
