Question Hello, All. A newbie here who's been reading the board in anticipation of a trip to Reno, and we're finally going to do it. We were planning to spend the night in Redding and then take 299 east over to 89 and head S. to Susanville, and then 395 to Reno. Then I read a couple of posts saying a good route is to take 89 from Dunsmuir to Susanville. Does anyone know anything about 299 from Redding? Is the road better/worse/about the same as from Dunsmuir?
And if one wanted to spend a night on the way, would it be better to stay in Medford, or in Redding, and then start out the next morning? Hubby can no longer drive, due to a stroke a few years ago, so I do, and I like to find out about roads, etc. as best I can before going. Haven't been to Reno in years, and have usually headed over to 395 in Oregon and then down, but I-5 works better for us this time.
Any suggestions are welcome! And thanks for all the good tips that I've picked up from the board for trying to leave Reno with some money in our pockets!

I asked the same question recently on the Reno Comments forum and received several helpful replies. You might want to check that out. When are you headed to Reno?

Thanks, Duck Man! We actually left home on Sun. and are back home this a.m.! The pass at Ashland was closed on Sun. We spent the night in Medford, and we learned on Mon. that although they opened it there late morning, the pass at Yreka was still closed and that they had over 3 ft of snow over two nights in the Sierras, we called and cancelled our reservations in Reno and headed home. Didn't want to continue on and get stuck down there with a ton of other folks. We're disappointed, but figure things happen for a reason sometimes. We stopped at 7 Feathers on the way home to satisfy our gambling urges. Wished we hadn't, 'cause the machines weren't paying much, and then we got stuck in an hour's worth of traffic jam due to a truck accident between Canyonville and Roseburg. A real mess, with all the road work that's going on in that area now, anyway.
Due to some other obligations, we probably won't make it to Reno for at least another month.

Sorry the snow kept you from getting to Reno. In a month or so you should have clear sailing all the way! We play at 7 Feathers once in a while, but I stick to live poker there. I don't trust the machines in Indian Casinos, no regulation, no minimum paybacks. They do have some 9/6 JOB video poker, but i'm suspicious of that as well.

Hava good day!

Wow, bummer of a trip. I don't know where you come from in OR but I make that trip monthly. The key is to always check the weather forecasts ahead. I check the Siskiyous (hard to get info on Siskiyou Pass tho) and especially Mt Shasta, CA and McCloud, CA. If those forecasts are clear, then I figure I have a clear shot to Reno. If forecast is bad, I cancel without leaving home.

The route is well-plowed and normally clear (with a certain number of winter exceptions as above) and absolutely beautiful year-around.
I leave I-5 at south end of Mt Shasta City - I guess that is 89 already = not sure. It is NOT at Dunsmuir-that would be WAY out of your way. Anyway, it is marked on signposts as route to Reno. Basically you take 89 and 44 and follow your nose to Susanville, then south to Reno, joining 395 a few miles out of Susanville.

From Grants Pass it is 6 hours and 340 miles.

Hope this helps for future trips.
Pick me up on your way thru GP. Very Happy

Perhaps we should have a new section heading called "Non-Trip Reports"??

Sorry, couldn't resist.

One of the reasons I try to take Hwy 58 thru the Cascades is the elevation at Willamette Pass is 5100 feet and the steepest portion is quite short. California Hwy 89 goes on and on....I think the summit on your route was about 1000 feet more.

Cal road cams: http://www.dot.ca.gov/dist2/cctv/traffic_cams.shtml

Oregon Road Cams: http://167.131.0.179/Pages/RCmap.asp?curRegion=0&mainNav=RoadConditions

But for you, Willamette Pass would have been way out of the way.

Sorry about the trip, sounds like you made a wise decision though. I like the route down 89 and through Susanville also, but haven't travelled it except for summer & early fall.we will be headed that direction tomorrow.(hopefully we'll have better luck all the way around)
I'll post a TR after we get back.
