I will be arriving the 24th of August and staying through the weekend. We normally come this weekend but I have never known a golf tounament to be going on. I'm curious how soon I will need to make my hotel reservations and if anyone knows how packed it will be due to the golfers? Or maybe I am just forgetful and they are always there on that weekend

That would be the Reno Tahoe Open. It's a PGA sanctioned tournament but does not draw the big names because of scheduling conflicts with other, more popular tournaments. Every year there are rumors that it won't be around for the next season, but it keeps finding sponsors at the last minute to save it. It doesn't seem to be a big draw so probably doesn't have a major impact on hotel rates. The only way to be sure, however, is to check a few hotels and ask what they're charging.
