Events as Remembered by BC Janice (Dave don’t remember so good)

Thursday, November 5, 2009,
This is one of our most memorable Reno trips ever. We had so much fun and actually won some $$.

Up early on Thursday and left home around 6:00 AM to drive to Seattle to catch an 11:30 Southwest Airlines flight for Reno. We stopped in Bellingham at the Silver Reef Casino for a continental breakfast which was superb. Arrived at SeaTac around 9:45. The flight was smooth except for final approach was a bit bumpy in the crosswinds. Arrived in Reno at 1:30pm and picked up our rental vehicle which was a black Kia Spectra. It was a great little car with lots of zip. Drove straight to the PepperMill and checked into our room in the Tuscany Tower. It was beautiful and so comfortable with all the lavish furnishings. We had a king size bed build for royalty (that’s us), a big flat screen TV, a bar, a safe, a great view to the west which allowed us to watch the sunset in the evenings. All the décor is Tuscan with marble tables and countertops. The bathroom is split into three rooms. One for the nice deep tub, equipped with jets, a TV, two sinks and a stool to sit on and watch the TV. The toilet was in a separate room and the shower in yet another.

We unpacked and sat looking at the awesome view while enjoying a beer and soaking up all the beauty and comfort of our room. Around 4:30 we drove to John’s place. So nice to see him, Higgins and Charlie who are his two angelic white cockatoos. We love those birds and Higgins was very happy to see us. Charlie wasn’t feeling too well but within the hour he was playing and saying “big eagle” for us all. For my birthday, John gave me a silver “Reno” charm and a handheld electronic game. The three of us went to downtown Reno to the Nugget and had an Awful Awful burger and a beer. Man, those burgers are awfully delicious and the fries portion is ridiculous (but good). Next we walked to Shooters and had a beer and played air-hockey and had few good laughs. John beat us both at every game—that rascal!! Back to John’s place and played with the sweetie pies Higgins and Charlie. They are so smart and very sensitive little creatures. Charlie was so happy all of a sudden and started to play even though he wasn’t in top form. Higgins was being a brat and John couldn’t calm him down. They were yelling at each other and I think Higgins won the argument. We went back to the hotel around 11:30 and around midnight Dave went to the cube bar to play video poker. I was sleeping when he stepped back in the room and whispered “I got a Royal Flush, I won a thousand dollars!”, I didn’t believe him and just said, “yeah, yeah….whatever”, and went back to sleep. In the morning when I saw the bills, it became apparent that he was telling the truth. What a lucky guy and what a lucky girl to be married to this winner. Yes!

Today is my birthday. Oh the bed was so comfy and very hard to get out of it. A nice down filled duvet on top of it all which made it all the more cozy. We met Jerry and Becky at the Coffee Shop for breakfast at 10:30. What a lovely visit we had and the conversation was so interesting about Sasquatch hunting. We sat with them for quite awhile just talking about everything under the sun and Jerry made us laugh steady. What a nice couple. Then Dave and I went shopping at Ross, one of my favorite stores to shop at. In the late afternoon, we came back to our room to rest and dress up to go for our dinner at Harrah’s Steakhouse. Once downtown, we walked over to the Silver Legacy and converted $80.00 Canadian, which gave us 68.00 American. We played a Kitty Glitter slot and ended up with $176.00 American. What a win. We had dinner at the Steakhouse in Harrahs and enjoyed a fantastic prime rib dinner. After dinner we saw the “Greg London” show. It was a great show. He is an impersonator and impersonates many singers, mixed with lots of comedy. It is really a great show and you leave feeling very happy. Back to the PepperMill, played Kitty Glitter and won around fifty. I went back to the room around midnight.

Saturday, November 7, 2009
Up at 10:00ish and went to the Pep’s Buffet for brunch and had two for one since Dave has his +55 casino card now. After lunch Dave went swimming in the heated pool and tried out the hot tub. I just lay on the sun chair and soaked up the rays wrapped in two big sweaters. A bit too cold for me to go swimming but Dave loved it. We walked around the gardens taking pictures of the sculptures and the flowered gazebo. The weather was really warm and sunny. We went shopping again at Steinmart and Trader Joes. After that we drove up to Tahoe via Mt Rose and took in the amazing sunset. The lake and surrounding mountains are so awesome with their captivating beauty that you find yourself immersed in the scenery. We drove back to Carson City and spotted some baby deer on the highway…they were so cute. We had an inexpensive but good dinner at the Nugget in Carson. Out in the casino a nice country and western 4-man band were playing. We played video poker for a couple of hours and were each up about twenty dollars when we decided to head back to Reno. As we walked out of the Nugget around 9pm, there was a little bird up in the lights and just singing to his hearts desire and keeping time with the music of the casino. What a cute sight to see. Back to Reno and Dave called John to come over and play V.P. I went to bed while they gambled. No luck this time. John headed back home around 11:30 and Dave got back to the room around 4am. DaVinci Diamonds had returned some his evening’s poker losses and the free drinks made up for the rest.

We were up and out by 10am. We had breakfast at the coffee shop again. They make great omelets and the portions are big enough that we could share one and be full. We went over to John’s and played with the birds and then the three of us headed out to Genoa. They say every road leads to Genoa. Our route was Hwy 395, through Carson and down the 206. We drove around this tiny sleepy town which has lots of long horned cattle. We went to the one and only Genoa Bar, Nevada’s oldest Thirst Parlor built in 1853 and in 1884 became known as gentleman’s saloon. It has a lot of history hung on the wall; including, Rachel Welch’s bra hung on the antlers. The people are very friendly and the beer is cold and delicious. They say, “You walk in as a stranger and leave as a friend”. We did sit in the bar and took in all the history and then I shopped in a little souvenir shop next door and bought some Indian bead necklaces for a very reasonable price. We headed back to Carson City and again had dinner at the Nugget. John played spin-poker. Back to John’s place, we played with the birds again and were back in the room by 9:00 P.M. to pack our bags.

Monday, November 9, 2009
Up at 7:30 and soaked up as much of the room as I could as it was our last day. We met John, Jerry and Becky at the coffee shop for breakfast. What a great group of people and we had great conversation, lots of laughs, joy and love and of course great food. After hugs and kisses we said our goodbyes until next time. Dave and I went to the Eldorado---no luck. Got to the airport around 1:00 P.M., checked in, had lunch and boarded our 2:30 flight for home. Made good time and arrived in Seattle twenty minutes early. We were home by 8:30pm. As we stepped in our front door we called out, “Babies (our cats), we’re home!” they all meowed.

The end.

Dave and Janice, congratulations. This is the first trip report boasting a win in a long time. I'm glad it was you two. It was great seeing you, Jerry and Becky again and all at the same time! I'm looking forward to your next Reno run. Next month, maybe? And remember, next time, don't bend the pole at Shooters. They're really hard to straighten out.

Charlie and Higgins send their love.

John

Thanks John,
Yup, that's my best win ever! I was playing dimes but switched to quarters after a couple of 4OAKs. All this in my first 20 minutes of play. That's the way it's supposed to be, right?
Next month sounds good....do-able? That's another question.

Keep swinging that bat Jerry. You'll burn off those calories in no time.

I've mentioned this before, but here goes again. Those of you who remember what Reno was like in the eighties can find it at the Carson Nugget. The decor, the diner, and all the rest remind me of my first trips to Reno. They've got great live entertainment, about a dozen beers on tap (including Fat Tire, Jerry), full pay VP at the bar (in all denominations!)and great prices on food. I had a Sierra Nevada I.P.A. that was very very good. From my perspective, they could use a hotel (so I could get back to my room without driving) but they seem to draw in a large crowd of locals anyway.
After a little research I have come to the conclusion that the beer I had was a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale not an I.P.A. This does not diminish how much I liked it!

Your pics and reminder of Carson Nugget just sold us! we're going up next week and while staying in Tahoe on Harrah's dime, we're going to drive over to Carson and Reno and play there instead.

Thanks for the trip report, and it's nice to hear about a win!

It sounds like a great trip, and you got to meet up with some of the others that hang around this site. They actually do have a motel at the Carson Nugget - It is behind the parking area in the back, but I can't remember the name of the place.

You actually took your wife to Shooters? Shocked Your a brave man.

Janice read some of the banter on this board about Shooters and decided before we left, that she'd like to check it out.

And I'll have to admit to staying one night in Carson City's City Center Motel years ago. They have some kind of deal going with the Nugget and I got a funbook for staying there for a night. How was it? Nothing fancy, but O.K.
