I used to love Reno - used to go there once or twice a year. The last time I went, I had a really unpleasant experience at Fitzgerald's. Now Fitzgerald's is closed and I took my annual December getaway trip with my husband to Vegas instead. It just wasn't the same.
I miss the old Reno - great comps, loose slots, fantastic food, and fun people. Is it ever going to be that way again? Should I try again? If so, where should I stay? Silver Legacy? Peppermill? Let me know what you think.

To answer your question, ask yourself, "How was Vegas?" Huge airport, long lines, long waits, high prices, even worse comps than Reno, porn slappers on the sidewalk, a mile walk from your room to the casino, $125 per person for shows, high table limits and poor gaming conditions. True, Reno isn't what it used to be and neither is Vegas. But if you long for what Reno used to be you SURE aren't going to find it in Vegas. Just depends on what you're looking for. For hotels, I would suggest Peppermill. It sure ain't Fitzgerald's!

When R and I were locals, we rarely went downtown. We had our regular local outlying stops, like the Pep, Atlantis and Bonanza. Now that we live over 2 hours away, we want to stay downtown on our visits.

While downtown has it's problems, it has a vibe that a solo freestanding casino cannot give. You walk out of a downtown casino, and you are surrounded by many gaming choices, styles and characters. It doesn't look like your hometown with strip malls and a casino thrown in. You KNOW you are on vacation.

The problem downtown is, finding the right casino to lay your head. One that appreciates your business in an atmosphere of cleanliness and working HVAC. The trilogy of Circus, Silver Legacy and El Do can do that. As can Harrah's (if you do some of your gaming elsewhere.)

I'm glad you haven't given up on Reno, it's worth the effort to find your niche.

I think that the statement that everything everywhere has changed holds true.

I plan to continue to spend my $ in Reno. I like the "characters", the mountains, the low limits, and I can still get a breakfast at 3am near my room. Try that in Vegas! The CC-SL-Eldo Trifecta still works for me and I love that each offers something different. Flights are cheap ($102 RT from Seattle), the snow is within an hour, a show is still $34.95, and everything is close.

Overall, I think we must modify our expectations of Reno and celebrate what we do enjoy.

Oh, and I'm going to give the Peppermill a try in April. Fan of Eldo and SL, but thought I'd check out the new rooms at the 'Mill.

I just got finished complaining about the downtown elsewhere on this board, but even I would admit that it was a sort of Devil's-Advocate, Can't-they-do-better? kind of thing.

Reno still beats Vegas on every one of the points you mentioned, and even LVBear, who does both cities regularly and is leagues above me in terms of action, would probably (for the most part) second that emotion.

Wow, where are you finding flights that cheap? I have changed my monthly trips to Vegas because it is cheaper than Reno. The lowest airfare I can find is around $190.

Try Allegiant Air from Bellingham. $76 round trip (plus unusual large fees).

Thanks for your posts - I'm mourning the loss of the "old Reno" and needed to whine a bit.
I think that Zydeco said it really well "Overall, I think we must modify our expectations of Reno and celebrate what we do enjoy."

While I still love Reno, and plan to retire there someday, it just isnt the vacation spot for me that it used to be. Downtown Vegas is the closest I can find to the "old Reno" that I have had so much fun in for the past 25 years. True, the strip is jammed with people, over priced food, over priced shows, and such (I avoid the strip like the plague), but downtown Vegas still is the bargain that Reno used to be. I can always find food within a block at 3am. I can find multiple shows for around $40. Last time I was in Reno, all the restaurants were closed at 3am, and there were not any shows at ANY price. For outdoors, sightseeing, and such, I still prefer Reno, but for gambling, shows, food, reasonable flights, and reasonable accomodations, I have had to move on.

Thanks for the tip on Allegiant out of Bellingham. Only problem is that they only have 2 flights a week to Reno. Either I go on a weekend and pay exorbitant hotel rates, or go during the week and have to spend 4 nights........ I do fly them to Vegas though, for $90 RT, taxes included, with a choice of 3 flights a day.

Now Allegiant has cancelled their Bellingham to Reno route, citing not enough interest. The least expensive fare I can find to Reno is $180, from the Seattle area, with terrible flight times. But I can find lots of $150 fares, at all hours to Vegas.......

If the number of flights into Reno keep getting reduced, the price will go up, and less people will opt for Reno instead of Vegas, the less shows will be viable, the less restaurants will be open, etc, etc, etc. It really is sad.

Tatterdema,

I was able to secure $51 each way from SeaTacky to Reno, leaving this Thursday on Southwest. I signed up for their "Ding" specials.

Going to head to the Peppermill (for the first time in over 10 years). We had a nice offer (although more expensive than our normal SL and Eldo), so, what the heck.

My last Nevada trip included both Reno and Vegas. I had a great time in Reno (mostly by myself), ate great food, soaked up some local culture, did the mountains, and receved fantastic service by locals.

Frankly, the jaunt to Vegas made my skin crawl. I used to LOOOVVEE Vegas, but that whole strip thing just was too much. I was able to trek downtown (Ahhhhhh) and enjoy some low limits, a cheapo meal, simple cocktails, and everthing close by. But overall, I just didn't dig it.

But I'm heading back to Reno this week, will enjoy a spa, meals, drambling, Peg's eggs, and outdoor time.

My next vacation is Iceland so take my opinion with a grain of salt (or an ice cube).

Dang, I missed that sale. I sleep during the day, and miss a lot of the Ding specials. I will have to watch them closer Smile

Here is a link to the story about Allegiant pulling out. I never saw anything in the RGJ about it. I thought that was kind of odd, as I think it will affect Reno much more than it will Bellingham.
