I had promised my daughter a Reno trip in January as part of her Christmas present (my present too)... Well, January got away from me, so off we went last weekend. I had an offer from the Peppermill for $150 in free play, and two free nights in the Tuscany tower, and that was enough to get us moving east.

The weather Friday was not too good, but with a big 4 WD truck, the bad weather just doesn't bother me much anymore. It was snowing a little on I-80, but when we hit the summit, it was snowing heavy. I noticed a Cal-Trans truck with a lit sign warning about the steep downgrade and slippery road. Well, I slowed down, but I had two SUV's and a full size semi pass me doing at least 75 mph in that heavy snow- Yikes. Shocked We all made it, and the first stop in Reno was Gold Dust West. I like to stop there, as they have some old coin clunker full pay Pick'em poker. Well, this time it picked my pocket, so we hit the road again and stopped to check out Sheels. Wow, what a place. I even rode the ferris Wheel- like a little kid. I also tried out the shooting range. Now I have not picked up a rifle of any kind since my M-16 many years ago during that conflict in the 70's. Really felt weird.

We then stopped at a place I have never been in- Western Village. I walked in, and thought I was in the Peppermill. Cool The place was packed. We then headed west again and stopped at Rail City. I actually won a little here, as I found an old favorite vp game- USA poker. This is a 99.6% version, and I was happy as I hit some nice hands.

It was starting to get late, so we headed over to the Peppermill and checked in. It was back down into the casino, and I did pretty well. My daughter likes those penny games, and she got a lot of play, but again it was just a slow drain for her.

Saturday morning we got up and took the drive to Virginia City. It was cold (29 degrees) and snowing, so we did not stay long. We headed over to the Bucket of Blood Saloon, and listened to the Comstock Boys--- they are really good. Picked up some fudge, a stop at the leather shop, and back into Reno.

The rest of Saturday was a day of video poker and a lot of drinks. I found they had my favorite USA video poker at the Tuscany Lounge bartops, so I was happy. I hit one set of deuces on deuces wild, so that kept me going for awhile. I also picked up another $25 in free play for staying in the Tuscany tower (free).

Well, that is about it- I came home with the same money I brought, but those penny machines got my daughter. However, she plays with low amounts. No fancy dinners, but we did enjoy another great lunch at Oceano. I really like that place.

The room at the Pepp. was very nice, and everything was good. I tried a little 3 card poker, but I always seem to lose at that game. The dealer wiped out a full table in 25 minutes- including me.

Turned out to be a nice way to spend a weekend, and I was back home in the early afternoon on Sunday.

This is really something. The trip reports are coming in up fast and furious. That's got to be good for the old town. Glad to hear you had a good time and some wins to keep you going, CaSwede. Sorry your daughter didn't do better. Those penny machines usually do the same thing to me.

Entering the Western Villlage is always something of a shock...being so plain on the outside and so "Peppermillish" inside. I like the place but don't get out there too often.

Thanks for the TR. I'm glad you found time to go the Rail City, and won a little there! I have a question that may seem kinda dumb, but I always have wondered. You mentioned playing some VP at the Pep's Terrace lounge. I am always tempted to grab a seat and play for a hour or so, but don't know the routine. My question is, while playing VP at the casino bars, are the drinks free, or does it depend on the amount of play. I find that I am a much bigger drinker than gambler, and usaully play nickel VP, 25 cents a hand. The bar VP machines are quarter machines. If I only play 1 or 2 coins per hand, would the couple beers I order be comped, or would I be expected to pay for them. Just wondering, any input or experiences would be appreceiated.

Mike

Response to M-Mike. I forgot to mention that on your advise my daughter tried the Pharaoh’s Fortune machine at Rail City- on the end right? She said she won some, but I was more interested in getting a blond ale on tap at the bar. Very Happy

Getting comp drinks at the bars is easy. At the Peppermill, they require a $20 buy in. Just get a $20 bill ready when the bartender comes over, and if he sees you sticking in the machine, you are set. Play what you want. I was getting top shelf booze.... and lots of it. The band played till 1 AM, and I stayed till the end at the Tuscany Lounge. I have even stuck it out at the Cabaret Lounge.. the 2nd band ends at 3:30 AM!!! It can be tuff getting up by 9 AM after a night like that. Cool

Nice trip, mixing it up to these outlying places is looking like the way to go from the last few trip reports. I know R and I always do better the day we take to the road and visit some outlying places. Maybe it's just not getting "tunnel vision" on a bad game, and the non-gambling activity of driving...

A couple of questions Swede, do you have a Rail City card? R claims we had one 10 years ago; 10 years ago were they even Rail City? Anyway, any new member sign-ups?

What is this USA poker? Is it a game, or a brand with multi-games on it? I know All-Star poker, and like their selections, same game?

RenoLady- No I don't have a Rail City Card. I was going to, but the lines were huge, and we did not play there long. Oh ya- Rail City was there far more than 10 years ago.... I remember it 30 years ago, but they have new owners now.

USA video poker is just like All American. It is just a single line game, but the big difference of the paytable is on a 5 coin bet it will pay you 40 coins on a straght, flush or full house. Also, a straight flush pays 1,000 coins. It is just a little different variation game that I like.

RL asked a couple:

10 years ago, Rail City had the name but was not then owned by Terrible's. Seems that Sands bought it about 5-7 years ago.
Before that, it was something like the "Cotton Club" in the 90s.

Was a DUMP then, is a DUMP now. Much too smoky. Some creepier clientele than the Pep, Harrah's, Eldo, etc.
