What are your thoughts on going to Sparks and where would you recommend we play?

Sharon,

As long as you're in Reno anyway, a trip to Sparks might be interesting. It's easy to get to, either on the freeway or just keep going east on E. 4th and you'll come into Sparks near Rail City casino.

The two "downtown" casinos in Sparks are Ascuaga's Nugget and Silver Club. They're right across the street from each other so you can sample them both. Ascuaga's is the big guy in town, offering a variety of restaurants, top name entertainment, a pretty nice indoor pool and a large casino floor and poker. You can find some full pay video poker but the blackjack only allows doubling on 10 or 11.

The Silver Club is small and run down. The food in the coffee shop is OK. Blackjack is usually lower limits than across the street and they allow doubling on any first two cards. I haven't really made note of the machines there.

Another small casino worth visiting is Western Village which is, curiously, in the Eastern end of town. It's just off the freeway near the marina, so you might stop by there on your way to see the new Scheels sporting goods store. WV is owned by the Peppermill and shares the same decor. The restaurants are very good and, at least the last time I was there, they had pretty good blackjack including double on any. Dealers hit soft 17, which is the case everywhere around Reno. Table limits are also lower than you will find at the larger casinos.

One other you might want to check out is Rail City, but if you're timid about entering run down neighborhoods you might want to pass it up. The video poker is nothing special but the blackjack is pretty good. They have a new area with a nice bar/restaurant combination, the older coffee shop including a small buffet, and another bar. The food is good, not great, but generally pretty reasonably priced.

You could then check out Grand Sierra on your way back (easier to access by surface streets than by the freeway, if you have a map). That would make a pretty full day trip. Enjoy.

Remano

Thanks for the review. I looked at the week's weather and it looks like it's going to be nice for running from casino to casino. Now, if I can just talk Gary into getting off the bar stool at the Cube Bar we'll hit the road and explore the area.

24 hours and counting
