I have some relatives that wanted me to drive them to the Sacramento airport, and I figured that was on the way to Reno, so why not. I took my daughter with me and stayed two nights in the Tuscany Tower at the Peppermill.

Casinos visited: Gold Dust West, Rail City, Atlantis, Boomtown and the Peppermill. We also drove down south on Virginia St. and played a game of miniature golf. I haven't done that since I was dating.

Dining: The $7.77 T bone special at the Gold Dust West when we first got to town. It was pretty good for the price. Sportsbook Deli and Romanza at the Peppermill were the other dining options. I was going to eat at the new Saucy's that just opened on Wednesday, but my daughter said she wanted pasta. The Italian was really good again at the Romanza--- had the early bird specials.

Gambling: That is why I came, and I did a lot of it in a short period of time. I also made a major contribution to the beer bottle recycle bin at the Peppermill. I play video poker and my daughter likes those penny slot games. I had to keep feeding $20 in those machines for her. Even playing twenty cents at a time, it seemed to be just a slow drain. Does anyone ever win at these games? The bonus rounds look like fun however.

I played video poker and Three card poker. The Peppermill has some great paytables on video poker, and I stuck mostly to the 99%+ games with low variance-that is Jacks or better and NSUD. No royal flush, sets of deuces or even a straight flush, but I hit many four of a kinds and came out ahead. Just goes to show that a slow methodical game plan can work out. I would have brought home more, but the Three card poker ate into the profits. I would play VP until midnight, and then play the tables games till 3:30 AM. My daughter got me up at 8 AM, so I spent very little time in those nice rooms. I counted my money when I got home, and I have $100 more than what I brought. I played almost all fifty cent and dollars on the video poker, and put on a lot of points at the Peppermill to keep the offers flowing.

Preview: I am heading to Lake Tahoe this coming weekend. A friend of mine is a big Harrah's gambler (7 star), and he charted the private Harrah's yacht-- just 6 of us going. He also invited us to dinner-- "I will pick up the first $500 of the tab". Sounds good. I am staying at Mammothgambler favorite place- MontBleu. I have $125 in free play to use, and they are giving me free tickets to see the Doobie Brothers on Saturday night. Looking forward to this trip.

I laughed out loud. I like your way of thinking!

Glad the video poker was good to you. We sit for hours at the cube bar playing. What bar did you play at?

Can't go wrong with Romanza. Hardest part is deciding what to order.

Coming home ahead $100 is enough for you to go back and play some of those video slots.

Thanks for the report

I did play at the Cube bar, but I really like the Cabaret Bar. They have the 9/6 Jacks with a three way progressive, plus a live band. The return on this game was over 100% when I played. I also got hit up by a "lady" of the evening there. This has happend before. I also played at the newer bar out by the Tuscany tower. Very classy area, and a very nice bartender.

Hi CaSwede,

Thanks for the awesome trip report and good luck on your upcoming trip as well, sounds like you had fun and it's always good coming out ahead, I need a few of those right about now! Thanks for the heads up about the restaurants/bars too.

So, how was the Gold Dust West? I haven't been since it switched ownership. It appeared they have a new slot club so I threw my old card away as it's been a few years. Do they still have the drink carts rolling around the casino?

Yeah, I've won on those penny machines before but it doesn't happen often, I think the most I've won in a single jackpot is around $600. They can provide multiple payouts though and that's when it's fun.

The privately chartered yacht at Harrah's and the concert sound like alot a fun, I'm sure you all will enjoy them.

Thanks for posting.
Its getting me even more excited ot head to reno!

So did your room have a coffee maker? I have seen some people say they don't, but when my friend just stayed there in March, she had one.

Have fun in Tahoe. Be sure to report back on how it goes.

I like your sense of direction with the Sac airport, all airport runs should include that kind of fun!

You know, I believe I have a pretty good logical/analytical mind. + a pretty good memory. But it does nothing for me when it comes to those damn video penny slots. I will pump $20's in them, hooting when I get the bonus for a measley $10 payback. I can recite all the reasons to avoid them; explain the difference in paybacks with good VP paytables and yet you will still find me at them, grinning like a moron when three pyramids come up in Cleopatra. Sigh. Stay away CaSwede, continue going home $100 up!

Have a nice trip in Tahoe this weekend!

Mammothgambler- the Gold Dust West is still a dumpy place. The reason I stopped there was to play some of the last Pick'em poker in Reno....really old machines. I still don't have a slot card from them. I never played enough to bother. Beverage cart? No- gone with rest of the change carts in Reno and everywhere else. I am glad to hear that it is possible to win on those penny machines. I suppose if no one ever won, they evently would not get any play.

Alison- No coffee maker in my room. It is ok though, if I am awake, I am in the casino. Smile

RenoLady- I guess the lure, is the fun on those penny machines. The whole idea is to have fun....right? I will be back at the Sac airport on Monday. And guess what? It will be on the way home from a Lake Tahoe trip. Anyone else need a ride to the Sacramento airport? Laughing

No rolling beverage cart at the Gold Dust West? How the heck are they supposed to attract players?

It's a different world these days....
