I believe I had already made it clear with my previous posts - this was my first trip to Reno. Here's a rundown of my very brief vacation:

Hotel:

I stayed at Harrah's. The two nights were comped thanks to my play at other Harrah's properties. I was given a very nice room in the West Tower, 14th floor. It was a small room, not a lot of walking space (you had to turn sideways to walk between the foot of the bed and the dresser with the TV to get to the other side of the room,) but it was beautifully decorated. Bed was very comfortable and had tons of pillows which I appreciate. Bathroom was very nice with a single-serve coffepot and accessories. Housekeeping did a fine job and left me extra coffee goods when I requested it with a small tip.

Harrah's casino was a little kooky because it is split between the two towers. It took me almost 2 whole days to figure out the layout and how to get to the Virginia entrance/exit, the elevators to my tower, and the machines I was playing the most.

Other casinos:

I managed to play a little in all the Virginia Street casinos. I think I liked ElDorado the best, as far as atmosphere. Silver Legacy had great cocktail service. I signed up for all the players cards I could and received a $1 coin from Fitzgerald's and a matchplay coupon from Circus Circus. Other that that, no goodies or coupons or anything was being given to new players anywhere else.

I didn't win any good money anywhere, but I did win enough to keep me playing during my vacation and had about 1/3 of my budget left over to take back home.

Food:

On my first night I arrived late so I just had a quick bite at Harrah's 24 hr cafe. Had some sort of chinese food special which I believe was supposed to be General Tso's chicken. Not that great, but service was fast and I was in and out in no time.

Breakfast the next morning was at ElDorado's buffet. Great selection of breakfast foods, fruits, salads, pastries and my coffee cup was never empty. I also really liked the atmosphere and layout of the buffet. This was the best meal of my trip and the cheapest at $8.99. I'm still dreaming of the 2-bite-sized carrot cake from the dessert bar. Yum!

I had a late lunch/early dinner at ElDorado's 24 hour cafe. I was still in a breakfast mood and had the country fried steak. Not that great. But the saving grace was their cake/pie selection. They have a huge display case at the cashier's desk with some beautiful artisan cakes and other goodies. I got a slice of coconut cream cake to take back to my hotel room to make sweet love to later that night. lol

The following morning/afternoon was Harrah's buffet. On Saturdays they offer a champange brunch just like Sundays. It was only $12.99. I went around 11am and there was very little breakfast selections available. They really focused on the lunch aspect of brunch. Good food. The best thing I had was a piece of steak from the "Mexican" section that had been grilled to tender perfection. I have to say that while the food was good, I didn't much care for the buffet experiece at Harrah's. The atmosphere was lacking and very hospital cafeteria style. And the table service was poor. I had to flag down the server for my table if I wanted more coffee, or God Forbid!, some champange. He seemed completely oblivious I was there until I flapped my arms about to get his attention. I have no idea why I left a tip for that moron.

Other activities:

One of the things I do when I go on vacation is I like to check out the local Catholic churches. I may be a gambling fool, but I am a (mostly) good Catholic girl. Reno's Cathedral just happens to be a couple blocks away from Virginia on 1st street. So I walked down there and looked around. Missed mass, but went inside to take some pictures of the place. Very beautiful.

I also wandered around the Riverwalk on Friday afternoon. I was surprised that most of the shops along this path were closed during the day. I noticed that most of them had signage that indicated they opened after 4pm. I found that strange, especially on a holiday weekend.

Overal impressions:

All in all I had a nice time. I was a tad bored on Friday night because I had enough slot machine entertainment by 8pm and just retired to my room. I believe Harrah's was doing some sort of concert outside in the pavillion that night but I didn't feel like checking it out. I had done quite a bit of walking that day as it was or I might have adventured out to seach for some more nightlife. Besides, I had that sexy piece of cake back in the room waiting for me.

I think if I go back I will do the Tahoe bus and stay there for a day or so as well. And I'd like to check out Peppermill and some of the other places just outside of Downtown.

Thank you for your detailed report; it's exactly what we board members like to hear!

Glad you had a good time. I'll have to check out that cathedral at some point, 'cuz I'm sure I've gone past it a million times, but never stopped to take a look. Good place to do penance after a slot orgy!

You'll find that around here, opinions are highly mixed on Harrah's, and it sounds as though you encountered some of what generates this wide swath of opinions.

I think you may have committed a sin of some sort with that coconut cream pie, but the jury is still out as to which one.

Thanks again for the write-up, and be sure to let us know how it goes next time!

Thanks for your great report Alice. Glad you liked the Eldo's buffet. I've been a big fan of it for many years. Sorry you didn't care to much for the coffee shop. They have some dreat War Won Ton soup there.

I know what you mean about about those desserts...but don't worry, "what goes on in Reno stays in Reno!"

I went to the fridge for those 6 Fat Tires that I referred to in the previous post but they weren't there. From the title above, taken from BCD's previous post, I think he has already consumed them.

I remember at least 6 different wars in my lifetime, but no matter how hard I research, I can't find reference to the "dreat War".

As for Juan Tan, I think he was scrubbing up the tables in the buffet earlier.

I warned you guys. I'm still going for Silly Post #5000. Or maybe I am going for my very own Section 8......

I hope that "what comes off in Reno also stays in Reno"..

Nice report, Alice. As you continue to go to Reno, you find more things to do of interest with each trip. I always hit the thrift stores a time or two. Don't buy anything much but save tons of money by not being in the casinos.

BTW, Dave, I thought your subtle humor was very clever about the pounds from the Coconut Patty staying in Reno. Otherwise, I'd come home as a "Coconut FATTY".
(No comment please, John. Yes, I know that I am already a Coco Fatty.)

For those who have been PMing me: Yes, the Juggernaut Bat (as shown in my avatar) is a very popular softball bat.
Why else would I post such an avatar?

Good report. Come back often.

As to Eldo's buffet: Is it fully back open and remodeled or are they still crowding all into one side of it. I didn't like that last trip. Also much less choice for food, especially desserts, I thought.

Hawk - they did have what looked to be a wall put up on the right side of the entrance, which pushed the entrance/cashier line and exit line tightly together. However, the seating area appeared to be expansive.

As I was there for breakfast, I'd say the selection was ample. I could see if it were lunch or dinner there wouldn't be a lot of serving stations for a really large selection of foods. But breakfast was awesome in my opinion.

Thanks, Alice, that means they are still remodeling. I'll likely eat there, at least on "getaway" day.
