Just an F.Y.I. if anyone is interested. We just got back from Reno, and found the Golden Pheonix closed and they are currently auctioning of a lot of its contents. The auction is going on today (Tues. 2/7) and tomorrow. Today they were auctioning off most of the showroom contents. Lots of lighting and sound equipment. Tomorrow will be assorted hotel stuff, tvs, clothing, signage and gaming stuff. Lot of slot and poker machines, keno boards, craps and roulette tables, and felts. If you are in town it is worth a trip just to go see. Today there were very few bidders and stuff was going dirt cheap.

Was this sudden? I don't remember reading anything about announcements or plans to close it. What will happen to the location? Is there another casino going in or will it sit vacant?
GP was never one of my favorites, but I was still suprised to hear this.

It was announced well in advance, last Fall or thereabouts. It ended up closing a month or so ahead of schedule because all the staff were jumping ship and they didn't have enough people to keep it open, or so they said.
It is now encircled by a big chain link fence and they are starting to condominimize it (what else?)
In other condo news I read recently that the plans to convert the long vacant eyesore, Kings Inn, call for the addition of 7 or 8 more stories on top of the existing structure. This I gotta see. Hope those footings hold up. |

I want to see the King's Inn pushed into the train trench. |

Come on - by now, The King's Inn should be designated as a historic landmark, and enshrined in a coat of bronze.
The proximity to the mission is what gives it its incredible sheen of authenticity. |
