Sorry to break this up but I did this a few nights ago and lost the message. Did not want to write it a third time.

This was really the "highpoint" of my Reno trip. So I hiked the half=mile back to my room, grabbed the camera and started on the half=mile back to the Arch. When "what to my wandering eyes should appear" but an intersection full of police cars on Center St between CalNeva and Harrahs.

I wondered why this lonely intersection was blocked at this time of night. I was about the only soul around. I marched thru Harrahs and strollled on towardd the Arch, anxious to get my soon-to-be=treasured pictures.

Wow, again. Another big surprise. Santa's early gift was a Virginia St full of police cars, standing fender to fender across the street just north of the RR tracks. Bright lights shone and bubble gum machines flashed on all. Soon I was greeted with a voice over a bullhorn: You must clear the streets (or some such blather).

Now, the crowd got into the action and began to act up a bit, being instigated largely by this ridiculous and unnecessary show of force. As the patrol cars began forcing their tons of steel down Virginia St, the crowds reluctantly parted and began to disperse.
Is it a wonder when the patrol cars were followed by every blue uniform in town, marching behind and carrying weapons ready. Some seemed to be machine pistols. Not sure what all they carried. When the crowd was off the street, the blue shirts lined up in rows facing the Fitz. Some of it reminded me of scenes from Hitler's Germany.

Anyway, this broke things up. Sad to see. I did not see a problem or need for such a show of force. To a visitor, this was a letdown because - to that point - it was giving me a good feeling about the city of Reno and its citizens. Ultimately, it made me glad that I don't live there.

I can't explain the police presence, but all the santas were because of the annual event called the Santa Crawl:

I guess the fun goes a bit too far, sometimes. At the very least, the pack of Santas you saw wasn't like the one that turned up on the news - from New Zealand, was it? Drunken, marauding, vandalous - scandalous! Santas swarmed through a movie theater, or some such thing.

It's becoming almost predictable.

May I offer a lighter note? On Christmas day, I was taking in the famous "Christmas Spectacular" at Radio City Music Hall in good ol' NYC, and the Rockettes had one number where they were all dressed in Santa suits; they appeared gradually, for maximum effect. Great stuff!

John you made it into something sleazy. Hey, this was a charitable event. Anyway, shows you what kind of taste I have. I liked it, found it harmless entertaintment for a good cause.
Truthfully, I was amazed at the restraint shown by these interlopers from the frozen North (or maybe they all came from Sparks).
