November 5th, 2007.....Day One

Janice and I got up just after 5:00 A.M. We grabbed a coffee from Tim Horton’s* and drove straight through to customs at the Blaine (Peace Arch) crossing. Twenty minutes later we were parked at the tiny Bellingham, Washington airport. It was a beautiful day in the North West. Our Allegiant flight was on time and we were whisked to Reno in 1 hr. and 20 minutes. Although I had booked a compact car through “Expedia” from Dollar, we were given the keys to a beautiful Toyota 4- Runner. Outside the airport the air was fresh and warm. The weather was forecast for remain sunny and warm for the next few days. We drove to the Silver Legacy where the check in was very quick.

We threw our stuff in the room and went “out” for lunch. As we walked by the Brew Brothers, (Micro brew pub in the Eldorado) we noticed how quiet it was in there, so we went in and had a brew and shared a sandwich and fries. The beer was excellent. I had their pale ale while Janice tried a lager. The food was very good as well. We walked down Virginia St. and ended up at the Cal Neva playing some old style nickel machines. Stopped at the little Nugget on the way back and made a quick $30 playing Pharaoh’s Fortune. (An interesting aside for Pharaoh’s Fortune players…this is the only machine of its kind that I’ve seen that has 20 lines not 15.) That evening we had dinner at the Golden Fortune in the Eldorado. Unlike most of the Restaurants in the Eldorado this one isn’t on the Mezzanine. It’s located on the main floor next to the food fair. Anyway the food was very good, but it’s probably better to go there in a large group so you can sample a larger variety of dishes. After dinner we gambled a bit more and then, feeling tired from our long day, went to our room and watched “Shrek 3“.

November 6th.....Day Two (And Janice’s Birthday!)

To start the day off right I brought up tea, coffee and danishes from “Sips” the coffee nook in the Silver Legacy’s lobby. My present to Janice was a new Fuji digital camera. She likes it a lot and loves taking videos with it. Glad it’s got lots of memory. Anyway Janice loves shopping so we jumped in our SUV and drove south on Virginia to first a book store and then Ross “dress for less”. I think the Ross chain was created for gamblers since it sells clothing and shoes for a fraction of the “classy” stores. We gamblers would rather save our money for the slots than pay market value for our attire. After snagging some steals we drove back to the Legacy to unload them, and then it was time to go to “Mr. Reno’s” place.

John was out on the porch to greet us as we pulled in and Higgins and Charlie were not far behind. Charlie spent most of his time perched on my finger while Higgins sat on the Birthday girl’s shoulder. Higgins can be deceptive though, and before Janice knew it her sweater had two less buttons. Maybe Higgins thought Janice looked a little too warm or maybe he wanted to see her in her Birthday suit. Higgins is a guy after all! John gave Janice a huge box a chocolates. The three of us then headed for the Peppermill (also known to this board’s members as Alison’s Castle).

It just happened to be Tuesday ($1.50 Heinekens for happy hour at the Fireside not to mention the free appetizers). We sat and talked, laughed and took a few pictures. (I paced myself on the Heinekens since I could not forget that sometime later that evening I had to drive back downtown.) After a while we left the Fireside and played some Video Poker at the Cube Bar. All three of us did well at John’s favorite game “Bonus Poker Deluxe”. The pay out is great for any four of a kind. John, Janice and I made a profit playing “Time for Money” as well. I picked an option on a bonus round that “Mr. Reno” didn’t recommend but as luck would have it, it worked out well. We all had a hoot at the Peppermill that night. Around 10:00 we had a fantastic dinner in the Pep’s Steak House on John’s comps. We thanked John but he just said’ “Thank the Peppermill!” so we looked up at the mirrored ceiling and uttered our reverent gratitude. We drove John home around 11:30 and then went straight home to the Silver Legacy.

November 7th.....Day Three

We were up early but took our time getting ready to go out. Got caught up on world events with CNN and the Reno Gazette Journal. (A complimentary copy was left at our door each morning.) We had the Eldorado’s buffet breakfast. (It’s always good.) Around noon we jumped in our cool vehicle and drove to Virginia City. It was a balmy 75 degrees up there in the old mining town. We strolled through the graveyard and the town for an hour and a half or so. We took a few pics with Janice’s new camera. Then we pressed on to Carson City and the Nugget Casino there. After a good dinner in the coffee shop we gambled in the casino for a couple of hours. Its’ a nice older style, homey feeling, casino….mainly for the locals I guess but I like the atmosphere there. We had some luck there too. We were back at the room by 10 that night. I decided to go out and win some more money but…..that didn’t happen.

November 8th.....Day four (already!)

We went for breakfast at the Eldo’s buffet again. I found out on the way in that I had lost my gold card status and was back to being a lowly purple guy again. Damn, they must have spotted me playing at the Peppermill! So I got back at them by eating everything in sight. We did some more shopping that morning in Sparks at the JC Penny outlet store and back at Ross again. After a few bargains it was time to gamble again and we stopped in at the Atlantis for a while. I won on a “Super Times Pay Multi Strike Poker machine”, and Janice had luck playing “Wolf Run”. We decided we had enough of the Atlantis’ money and drove to the Peppermill again to meet John… err ah Mr. Reno.

We launched right into another video poker session at the cube bar. Janice was soon ahead almost $100 with a couple of 4 of a kinds. John and I decided we needed to put some more loot into “Time for Money” but the machine ate it up. Janice sat next to us playing a machine (we don’t remember the name) and she had good luck (another $100) at that. We drove John to his place around 10:30 and had to come in and say so long to the birds. Higgins was a little groggy but Charlie woke right up.
They both seemed happy we had come to see them again. It was a long goodbye and as we edged towards the door Charlie kept running back to us from the cage. We were back in our room at 11:30 and packed our bags.

November 9th.....Day Five

I brought up coffee and Danish again and we were soon checked out and driving to the airport. With our rented 4-Runner returned, we checked in and took one last stab at the slots and video poker at the Airport. Although the machines at the airport have poor payouts, we still each eked out a small profit. The trip home was fine but unremarkable except for the one hour wait coming back into Canada at “Peace Arch”.

OK, most of you will have noticed that I went to Reno two times in the space of just three weeks.
All I can say is, “And I’m ready to go back again anytime!”

John; Thanks for spending your time with us. We both had a blast with you and of course Charlie and Higgins.

Alison; The Peppermill is looking fantastic, huge, almost overwhelming. We had the most fun there!

Stan; We did not enter Shooters. Janice doesn’t seem interested. I can’t figure it out. Once though, as we drove by, I forced her to look at it.

BC Dave,
Thanks for posting your trip report. I enjoyed it. Sounds like you had a good time. It looks as if Mr Reno has Higgins trained well. Is that how John gets women undressed??? LOL Laughing Im jelous you got to visit my castle. I have a little over 3 months until i go back! Seems like forever!!

I did not realize the Pharoahs Fortune machines in Reno were 15 liners. They all are 20 liners her in Wa. I have a love hate relationship with that game.

Fun report Dave - fun avatar also. Somehow I feel I was a part of that trip, eerie, huh? I think you made your lovely wife very happy with her birthday trip to Reno.

Yes, Ali. I trained Higgins to undress women while Charlie takes pictures. Higgins is also trained to remove precious stones from jewelry. You really should come meet him.

Thanks gang, for the compliments on our trip report and the new avatar. Janice helped a lot with the trip report. She kept a journal of each days events that helped spur my memory greatly. The Avatar was actually a lot less work than some previous creations, like the old "puffer".

Dave;
Staying at the Silver Legacy is great. Rooms were clean and it was quiet. They have the security guard at the base of the Elevators which helps guests feel more secure. On the other hand the rooms at the Sands two weeks before were fine too.

Yup those birds are quite the characters...lots of fun....just watch your buttons, cameras and jewelery. I wouldn't set foot in the place if I had a nose ring or some similar piercing anchored adornment.

Great report! You really got around!

I really like the Nugget in Carson, it does have a warm fuzzy, sort of vibe. Maybe all that cigarette smoke? Anyway, I like it. glad you did too.

J.C Penney outlet rocks! Last Thanksgiving we stopped over for a few hours and I bought most of my Christmas stuff. I remember $4 sweatshirts (good ones) and $2 toys!
