Trip Report Oct.18 - 21

The weather for our trip couldn't have been better. There wasn't much traffic since we left on a Thur. morning. The Fall colors were beautiful mixed with a fresh dusting of snow. Made good time even after making a few pit stops along the way, even stopped at Costco in Carson City for a little shopping.

Check-in at the Fitz was fast as usual, had a mini suite on the 8th floor and we were greeted with a phone call as soon as we walked into our room asking if everything with our room was alright, if there was anything we needed, etc. How nice, never got that at the "other" hotel we used to stay at. This is just one of the many reasons we made the Fitz our "home away from home" three years ago, it may not be a big fancy resort hotel but the folks there know how to treat guests and make them feel welcomed.

Dropped off our luggage and headed for the stage bar where we were greeted by our fav bartender and cocktail waitress. It was nice to see familiar faces still at the Fitz. Had a couple of drinks and headed off to play one of our fav slots. Played over 2 hrs. on $20 (racked up some O'Lucky Bucks) and went to get ready for supper. We had a reservation for Limerick's at 5 pm, service and food were great (used our $50 voucher).

Back to the stage bar to listen to George sing, he always puts on a good show. We played a little more on the slots, no wins but the machine did give us enough to keep playing on without having to feed it. The casino wasn't too crowded for a Thur. but bells were going off quite a bit. Made it an early night and headed back to our room.

Friday morning, the phone was flashing a red light, meaning there was a message for us, it was to remind us to pick up our welcome envelope (with out VIP badges) for the slot tourney at the front desk. How nice! Went down and got it, headed for the Keno lounge to play a little before heading to breakfast. Hubby had a few bloody mary's while I played, had a few small wins, mostly $10 and a few for $5 Breakfast was good, they still have the egg cook station, and they still have the best coffee at the buffet!

Spent the day playing some slots, having a few drinks, did a little more shopping downtown and then went to the registration party that began at 2 pm. This tourney was done a little different than the others, this time, they had an extra round, meaning they went from 150 max players to 173, no welcome gifts but increased cash prizes from 1st through 75th place as well as cash drawings. The decorations were great and the whole tourney crew were in costumes.

Last year I didn't have the nerve to enter the Halloween costume contest during the slot tourney.....this year I did. I haven't dressed up for Halloween since I was a kid and it was a lot of fun! I wore my costume for my first round, got a lot of looks and even scared a couple of people in the elevator...lol They took my pic and asked me to wear my costume to the Awards Ceremony. Only 2 others, besides myself, wore a scary costume, although I didn't win....I had a lot of fun trying Smile

By Friday afternoon, the Fitz was packed with people and bells were going off all over the place. We saw this one man on the 2nd floor casino win three identical jackpots of $2,100 on a dollar machine over a period of a few hours. None of our jackpots were that high, but we won enough to keep playing on. I did win the nightly Fitz drawing Friday night for $100 first time I've won anything on that. No big slot wins but after all my gaming was done for this trip, I came out even Smile

The demolition of the rainbow walkway was underway, it's going to be weird not to see it there anymore. The rumor mill has it that the city traded the Fitz the Old Reno in exchange for the walkway and a small portion of land on the other side of the street. The walkway is coming down and the train trench will be covered and a Plaza is planned, little shops, etc. from the Fitz on down towards the Sands. Can't wait to find out of that's true and what it will look like when its completed. If its true and the Fitz gets the Old Reno, what a great expansion it would make for the casino, they could add somemore table games, etc. The new owners also own the Old Phoenix casino next door to the Fitz, wonder if that will be a Fitz expansion as well? Time will tell I guess.

Word has it that the new owners will be replacing the elevators at the Fitz,
updating the rooms, starting from the top floor down and updating the parking garage. We've never had a problem parking in the garage there, no one has ever bothered our car, and we never minded the short walk to the hotel. I'd rather walk than trust my car with valet, I've seen how valet drivers speed around the parking garages.....no thanks! We also heard that the hotel will remain as the Fitzgeralds. Glad they're going to keep the name Smile

The slot tourney was a blast, went to the awards ceremony (in costume) and found that I took 13th place for $100, won two raffle prizes too. They has us all come up on the stage for a group photo in our costumes, can't wait to get a copy of it. The room was so full of people that it was standing room only, so we didn't stay for the whole thing. Not sure who won 1st place but the prize was $11,000 this time....Wow!

Before we knew it, Sunday morning came and it was time to pack up and
head for home after another great breakfast at the Fitz buffet. Check-out was fast and we headed for home. I hate it when the time goes by so fast, seemed like you just get there and then it's time to leave. We hope the new owners will keep the slot tourneys going but even if they don't, we'll still keep going to the Fitz, our next trip will be in April....looking forward to it Smile

Sounds like you had a really nice time at the Fitz, and even won one of the nightly drawings!

As much as I want some of the renovations, (slow elevator, old public restrooms, water problems in the rooms) I'm afraid they'll change too much and not offer the same comps and deals. But since they're keeping the name, maybe they'll keep the slot club processes.

When you're on a tournament, do you eat free anywhere? Limerick's too? or just Molly's and the buffet.

Thanks for the report, it's always good to hear of an enjoyable stay and tournament, even with no huge victories.

Sad to hear about the coming demise of the walkway, but it's probably for the best in the long run - if they can really make better use of the space, so be it. But I'd like to know if they'll consider moving the Lucky Forest, since the location now really couldn't be more inconvenient!

Thanks, PEB.
I am heading over to Fitz sometime today to try to replace a few expiring points. Hope to see something new. Walked thru there a few days ago and they had ripped out every machine that we had the slightest interest in.
Left all the crummy stuff.

So, there was a lot of empty space. Hopefully, they were gearing up for Nov 1.

As always, thanks for posting your trip report.

So the breakfast buffet at the Fitz is actually good?? Do they have made to order omlets by chance?

Hi All,

RenoLady: You can eat at the buffet or at Molly's Garden, all food and drinks, room are included with your slot tourney entry fee.

Barb: Even if it gets relocated I hope they keep the Lucky Forest., it wouldn't be the same if it wasn't there.

Jerry: Good luck....hope you win lots of $$ ! What machines do you like to play?

alison: Yes, the food in the buffet is really pretty good, always enjoy the breakfasts there, and the great coffee! Yes, they still have the egg cook station, they will cook em however you want em, omlets too, my hubby always gets one with everything!
