We have been going to Reno/Tahoe for many years and, of course, always rent a car. We just booked a trip for Oct. but are finding that rental rates are up considerably from our last trip in April. What rental companies usually have the lowest rates?

You just have to keep checking, they change all the time. Usually, National, Avis or Dollar are about the best.

You should check on the internet everyday. I'm heading to Reno in a few days, I've re-booked my reservation with Dollar 4 times already because prices keep dropping. I always find the lowest prices at either Dollar or Alamo.

Thanks for the replies. I just booked a Standard (Dodge Stratus) for 1 week from Enterprise for $132 total-much cheaper right now than Dollar or Alamo. I don't think I can do any better than that. I originally booked an intermediate but realized that their "intermediates" are what I consider compacts so I rebooked a standard.

So here we have two people who are clearly bucking the trend and returning to Reno, apparently all the way from the East Coast.
So tell us, N and J, since we touched on the subject of the fall of Reno and the rise of the Indian casinos in another discussion topic - what is it that continues to draw you back to Reno, as opposed to going to the big Kahuna of Vegas, or one of the easier/cheaper configurations, such as Atlantic City, Harrah's North Carolina, or the Akwesane Mohawk Casino in upper-upstate New York?

Stan,

We do go to many other locations including AC (our home base) and LV but always try to get to Reno/Tahoe once or twice a year. We usually stay in Reno for a few days and Tahoe the rest of the time. I can still remember the first time we went to Tahoe. When we came around that bend where you get your first view of the Lake and I knew then, that this would be my favorite place of all we've visited and it still is. We enjoy outdoor activities like hiking and biking so Tahoe is the perfect place for us. It doesn't hurt that there is gambling there too and that we never pay for a room in Tahoe or Reno. We're lowly penny/quarter slot/video poker players but, since we go to AC and LV a lot, they comp us at Harrah's in Reno and Tahoe but we also get free rooms at Peppermill which we love. So.....did I answer your question?
PS. We've never been fans of the Indian casinos anywhere!

That most certainly does answer the question, thank you very much, and it tells me that you are part of that highly-enviable group of people, those who travel to gaming destinations several times a year. How I would love to be a member of that class!
We're just glad to see people who take a returning interest in Reno. Thanks again!
