I was in town last weekend, and one of the workers at the Peppermill mentioned to me that Labor Day Weekend was a slow time for them. Huh? I thought people would flock to Reno from California to gamble. Is this true???

Not sure if it's true or not, but if it is, I would guess the reason is that most of the action is at the rib cook-off in Sparks, which probably draws business away from the Peppermill.

It could be quiet because the Bay Bridge is closed for the weekend, East Bound only. talked to my friend, he stated it took him two hours to drive to Oakland, from Daly City via San Mateo Bridge. Sad

Actually, I was in the neighborhood yesterday afternoon around 2:00 and stopped in out of curiosity. It looked pretty busy to me. All pits and about 75% of the tables were open. Most tables had at least 2 or 3 players. The slots seemed to be pretty busy, too. For the middle of the afternoon it didn't look too bad.

I can tell you why Labor Day weekend would be not busy. I just got home from the Oregon Coast and I got to tell ya....Both the Indian Casinos there (Spirit Mountain and Grande Ronde) seemed to be quite busy. Reno casino's can give whatever reason they want. The truth is, there is just no reason to drive/fly for hours to lose your money. We all can get it done a whole lot closer to home these days

Yeh, but it just ain't the same thing.

That notion may not be enough to save Reno, but I'm sticking to it.

evandors,
I disagree, You can not get it done closer to home, I live in oregon and i have been to every indian gaming place in the state, and believe it or not none of them come close to the way i am treated in reno, just say no to indian gaming, I am hopefully waiting for oregon to tax the living crap out of them, they are making too much money off of it , Maybe make a law that no big corps can come in build the casino and take 95% of the profits.
and let them sit on thier asses and take the rest.......
Maybe my comments will liven this board up it has been a little dead lately, anyway driving to reno tomorrow flying to vegas thurs for 3 nights.
PS jerry I am still waiting for the phone to ring. give me a call

Exclamation
Well I must say I couldn't agree with you more Kevin. I have yet to find a Indian Casino in WA state that is any where near as much fun as being in Reno. I (sure I am the minority) would much rather stay out of the Indian Casinos and go to Reno a few times a year than frequent the local ones.
Give me Reno any day!

Sorry, but the Indian casinos just don't get it done for me. It takes a whole lot more cash at Colusa casino to get any decent type of comps---6500 points(gained 1 dollar of play equals 1 point) to get $10 dollars for use in gift shop or buffet. For $6500 dollars of play at Atlantis, I've stayed 12 nights in the last year in the concierge tower, had several buffet breakfast and dinners for two at Charlies, 3 dinners for 2 at the Seafood and Steakhouse.....1 full night of limo service to take my mom for her birthday to Lake tahoe.......3 free slot tourny entries....

Oh Gee................I have to jump in add my 0.2 Cents Worth (The amount I usually leave a Indian Casino with) about the Oregon Indian Casinos. Bluntly they SUCK. I can barely stand to walk in the door of the joints. Boring......no BORING!!!!!!! and hapless donors staring at Video Screens. Spirit Mountain does offer 5 Times Odds on Craps and that kind of dulls the pain of crossing the door step of the joint. The places are dead, never see anyone winning much of anything, and most patrons are to ignorant or stupid to take advantage of a decent game of Craps.

My loyalties still lie with Reno, however that is rapidly changing to Laughlin, Nevada. Every time we head to Reno we find the Downtown Area changing for the worst, and more and more apathy from the Casinos and dealers. It's not that we are small gamblers, nor are we "Whales", but the damn casinos don't seem to much care about a few hundred dollars of action anymore. Well, I better backup a moment, because they still are a hell'va lot better than the Oregon Indian Casinos.

Anyway, we still make our Reno Runs 3 - 4 times a year, but hit Laughlin 2 or 3 times now. (Laughlin is fun and CHEAP......much like Reno of a few years ago.)

We do stay the hell out of Las Vegas which has to be the greatest gambler's rip off on the planet. (Way to expensive!!!!!!)

Yo Man over and out.............

I certainly agree with all your comments regarding Indian casinos sucking. I go about once a year when we are at the coast and budget $20.00. But you do kind of prove my point. Obviously you all have been. As have thousands of others. And while we are all able to realize that they are not as much fun or as good a gamble there are full parking lots pretty much 24 x 7 that prove we are in the minority.

There are tons of people who can not afford or are just not interested in making a long trip to gamble. In the old days they HAD to go to Reno to get their "fix". Now, just a quick daytrip. With 2 Indian casinos opening in the next 5-10 years very close to the Portland metro area it will only get worse.

Everyone I know says they hate Indian casinos. Then who the heck is going to them. I have to say, I see far bigger (and much dumber) highrollers at the card rooms in La Center Washington than I ever do in Reno.

You talk about the worst player odds/rules in the world, La Center has them. Add rude dealers to the mix. Yet the place is packed with people dying to lose their money.

The biggest problem is this - All the gamblers that Reno has lost over these last 10 years will never come back. And new generations of gamblers have no reason to go to Reno with it's crappy downtown "strip".

I remember when the Sunday Oregonian would have dozens of adds in the travel section fro Reno trips. Now there are zero. Still have them for Vegas..But not Reno. And when you really think about it, why would you want to go to Reno????

Sure us longtimers like it, because we remember the good old days. But how charming would it seem to you now if you were going for the first time????

You are absolutely right! A heck of a lot of folks simply like to gamble. Convenience I guess is the number one draw for Indian joints.
Years ago, I used to go the the Dog Track darn near every night. (Most seasons I usually made money.) We used to laugh that the damn track could be racing worms, and still be drawing a nightly crowd of 15,000. The Dog Track is now long gone, probably due to the Indian Casinos. Many of us around here for years did not understand why the State didn't legalize casino gambling, and use the revenue of for education. Oh hell no, they let the Indians have the honors, and now Spirit Mountain is the biggest tourist draw in the state, and they are making soooooooooo much money they are constantly trying figure out places to spend the excess. (Remember the New Portland Baseball Stadium proposal?)

You could very well be right, that Reno in the gambling scheme of things is toast. I would say they would deserve the honor with their lack of vision and innovation for the future. What happened to the great owners and promoters of Reno? Yeah....... I know all gone.

Yo Man................over and out
