According to Howard Stutz, Harrahs Reno has been sold, and will be closed this summer (likely after this spring's USBC Men's National bowling tournament). It will reopen as a non-gaming property.

No surprise to me whatsoever, especially once Eldorado bought Caesars last fall.

Glad I got to stay there one last time a few months ago. But not a surprise after seeing the sad state of the hotel.

It was inevitable with the Eldorado merger. That would be too much share of one market and they didn't want to run a-foul of the regulators.

It also consolidates all Caesars employees to their current properties without having to spend a nickel on way-past-due renovations, and now they get a wheelbarrow full of cash out of it.

Another Reno iconic hotel/casino bites the dust. It's been in decline for years but part of me will still miss it. One of my favorite old restaurants used to be at Harrah's. Cafe Andreotti, a great little Italian restaurant that was replaced by the steakhouse. I was so bummed when it closed down! I really enjoyed dinners there while overlooking the lights of Cal Neva.

According to the RGJ the non-gaming property will include apartments, retail space, gym, restaurants, bar, coffee shop and entertainment within a park like setting.

My next trip to Reno is tentatively planned for May. I'm glad I will have the chance to go there one last time before she closes down. Crying or Very sad

From the Downtown Makeover Facebook page...

CAI Investments have revealed their initial plans for the Harrah’s Reno site. A true mixed use development dubbed “Reno CityCenter” it will Include converting the hotels current West Tower, closest to Virginia street, into 530 residential units. It’s not known what will happen to the East Tower, which is adjacent to Lake Street. It is likely they’ll add a hotel component, likely branded.

Renderings are initial; drawings show initial concepts, it’s likely an architect has not yet been signed up.

Additionally, the project will include retail space and converting the current plaza space into a true urban center with landscaping and fountain. Restaurants and even a grocery store are being floated. The project should be funded via opportunity zone funding.

I'm guessing that HAN participants with reservations there won't be happy. Because the rates now are somewhat pricey.

Does this mean there's a chance to rebuild the Nevada Club & Dick Clark's American Bandstand?

How about bringing back the Mapes? Comstock? Pioneer? Riverboat? Siena? Sundowner?

The new owners at the J.A. Nugget in Sparks have some sweet promosbased on a very low level of play:

The key is, " Rates FROM $ 25/ night ...." (including food comps)

Looking back at this post, I am glad that Sands made it out alive and it even got a renovation. Excited to see it myself on June!

I was afraid that was going to happen.

Really stinks, as I had a reservation for Sept 24. I hope The Row taps into the Caesars players before then... I've gotten used to free rooms.

Knowing that Harrah's was planning on ceasing operations later this year and compounding that with the corona virus lock-downs, it's doesn't come as a surprise to me that Harrah's, now will not reopen at all. Still, it's a sad day for Reno to loose this iconic hotel casino. I've had some great times there. Stayed there last October. It was already a sad shell of it's former self. I'll wish the new project good luck, but I'll always miss the way that block of Virginia street was in the 80's and 90's.
