Two giants in the history of gaming in Reno are the Mapes Hotel/Casino and thee Riverside Hotel/Casino. The Mapes was, tragically, knocked down in January 2000. The Riverside closed in 1986. Here's my attempt at reanimating the lights of those great great places. (I believe the picture was taken sometime around 1982.)

Nice job on the lights, Dave. It's almost like walking down the street. Out of curiosity...how long did it take to create that masterpiece?

Six years to rebuild the hotels and 3 seconds to film the lights. Er, maybe it was a couple of hours to add the lights to 3 images and compile them into the animation. Thanks, Boss, for complimenting my work.

Anyone besides ME ever stay at the Mapes?

I was there sometime in December of 1979 . "Annie" was playing at one of the showrooms and there was a big windstorm late one night. All machines took coins and when the power went on & off....some machines began hurling coins without even being played. Suddenly, bus boys, dishwashers, and shoe shine folks chased players away from all the machines.

My date locked me out of MY room. More details for $ 5 and worth it.

I recall the sign across the river said, "Pick Hobson's Riverside".

Good job on the lights!

How much of that story can I get for 5 bucks Canda-Hovian?

Marilyn Monroe stayed there too, J.D.

Looks like my date on the photo above is off by a few years. Pick Hobson took over from Jeese Beck in 1978 and ran it 'til it's closing in 1987. (I think the casino closed in '86.) So anyway, since the name Jeese Beck is on this pic's marquee this picture, it must have been taken in '78 or sometime earlier.

I wanna hear more about the date locking you out of your room, but I don't have an extra $5. Here's my Peppermill information so you can get $5 in free play from my account:
