First one of these I have done..So hope you like - Sorry for the length
Sunday 7-16 Flew in from Portland for 2 night trip. Took Silver Legacy shuttle from airport (even though staying at Fitz, figure we will lose enough $ to make it ok). Got checked into room smoothly and headed to Cal Neva for breakfast. While eating, wife played Keno and for an exciting 10 seconds we thought she had hit 5/5 for $825. Alas, it was 4/5 for $9.00. Bummer for low rollers like us !! Gambled rest of day all over downtown area and consistently lost at table games and slots equally. Did have a nice win at Circus on crap table as a guy held the dice for about 45 minutes. During that time wife lost at blackjack and slugged down enough white russians to be thouroughly pickled. So, off to Limericks for dinner to try and sober her up a bit. Nothing more obnoxious than being around a drunk when you are sober let me tell ya!!! For punishment I ordered frog legs appetizers and made her try them (she is not very adventourous when it comes to food, so good thing she was crocked). She said they tasted like tough halibut. I actually liked them. In bed early to try and get ready for a winning day the next day.
Monday 7-17 Started day with poker tourney at Sands (4th place $ paid to 3 places) Bummer !! But did hang around and win a couple hundred dollars at 3-6 due to big pot won with lucky draw on river to a full house ($120 pot ). Lost steadily rest of day at everything we played. And believe me we played everything, everywhere downtown. A couple small wins in roulette and a nickel machine but other than that a depressing losing session that ended with me eating like a pig at Silver Leg buffet and going to bed at 9:30 because I was so over full. Where is a stomach pump when you need one???
Tuesday 7-18 Kind of broke, so walked around a lot and people watched. Lost again at pretty much everything. Decided we were going to go home with LAST $50 (started with $500 !!) Ended up with an hour to kill until shuttle ride to airportl. Sat in Fitz keno loung to kill time. Wife called teenage son and asked for 5 lucky numbers for keno. (now the only other keno we had played was the near miss right after we arrived). He was watching Mariners game on tv so he read off 5 players jerseys on the game. She bought a 2 game 5 spot ticket and first game hit all 5 . We jumped around and made complete fools of ourselves with joy at the $840 win. Realized then that she had said as parting words to kid "I will split my winnings with you". After much deliberation decided $400 was too much $ for a 14 year old so called and negotiated a $50 commision. Headed out to airport on Silver Legacy shuttle for 9:15 PM flight home (So tell me, is it immoral to scam these free shuttle rides after losing my butt in their casinos?) Get to airport to find flight delayed out of LAX and we might not get to Portland until 2 Am. Decided to go back to Fitz and enjoy another free night of hotel. Get to Fitz, THEY ARE FULL !!!! Eventually find a room at Cal Neva for $50. Check in collapse in bed.
Wed 7-19 Get up lose another $40 to blackjack and keno (those 5 numbers suddenly suck !!). Take Cal Neva shuttle to airport and make it home a day late but with enough money to cover entire trip except $85. A pretty cheap trip considering we did not win at anything basically except the one keno play.

Favorite parts of trip - Friendly dealers at Fitz, and Cal Neva, great food all over (first ever awful awful), free drinks (and lots of them !!) time away from kids, friendly young Cal Neva shuttle driver whose wife had a baby 2 weeks before and was trying to work all the overtime he could find (boy do I remember those days), nice gal at hotel desk at Cal Neva, airconditioning in casinos!!, gorgeous weather

Bad parts of trips - Continued decline of downtown including bums EVERYWHERE (I really do not feel comfortable out at night and I am a 39 year old big guy) Road construction all over the strip, loud music Sunday night at Harrahs plaza until 11:00 (hey I needed my beauty sleep) Untalkative dealers at Sienna and Sands, Dealers who did not speak a lick of English I swear at Circus, 6-5 blackjack at the usual haunts and a table at Cal Neva even (Which I did not notice until I hit one), Rapid Roulette never open at Harrahs (looked fun wanted to try it), bad aircondtioner in room at Fitz,
And my #1 complaint - This town sure ain't what it was 15 years ago...I so miss Nevada Club, Harolds Club, Riverboat, Comstock, Sundowner, etc etc...I only really feel at home in Fitz and Cal neva, I guess I am most comfortable with my own kind of people. Everytime we come to reno I leave saying "Maybe we should go to Vegas next time"
PS - As far as Shooters....I live in the Portland area , which has more strip clubs per capita than anywhere in the US...Shooters seemed like a typical SE Portland area neighborhood tavern to me !!! (You Portlanders will know what I mean)

Great Trip Report. Thanks for taking the time. Yeah I know what you mean about Reno changing but I still will take it over Vegas any day. Glad you had fun.

I really enjoyed reading your trip report. I had to laugh at you taking the free shuttle to a different hotel than where you are staying as we have done that too Laughing Laughing Barb

You know I hate to to keep yacking and whacking at the Reno Downtown Area, but...............I'm with you! Reno simply is not the same. Don't get me wrong, I still prefer Reno over the Oregon Casinos, but the crazy fun days of running in and out of all of those great old joints is long gone.

Hey.......any what happened to all of the great entertainers and shows?

Anyway I still rate Reno very high and always enjoy the trip. Frankly, Laughlin reminds much more of what the "Old Reno" was like. Easy walk to most Casinos, reasonable priced food and good entertainment.

Now we plan "Entertainment Trips" to Las Vegas. Gambling trips to Reno and Laughlin. Favor Lauglin in the winter......now that's a big Duh!

I still believe some enterprising casino owner in Reno could do very well with a old style joint with cheap booze, food and low limit fair games.

Anybody for $1- $2 Blackjack which pays right!

No more whining.......YoMan over and out!
